View Full Version : So has Spoestra proven he's a good coach yet?

He has his team playing elite fundamental disciplined defense, and on offense they are executing a varied and technical playbook. He has convinced Lebron to start posting up more and working down in the block. Despite having no 7 footers who are decent heat have one of the best interior defenses.

So Riley was right it seems. Do you think Spoelstra is a good coach?

People use the argument that it's impossible to fail with his pieces but then you can use that argument against Pop and especially Jackson.

He made some adjustments in the 2013 NBA Finals. And He out coached Gregg Popovich in Game 6 and 7.

He's the Filipino Phil Jackson. He's getting better every year since he started coaching the Big Three in 2011.

I think Spoelstra is a good strategist.

I also think he would struggle with a younger team that wasn't as self-motivated as the Heat players are. The dude is a corny ass boy scout. "Don't let go of the rope!" and all that stuff. I honestly think most players wouldn't take him seriously. The Big 3 had no choice because they couldn't change the coach but they were determined to win titles. So they worked hard and did their thing anyway, and Spoelstra helped strategize.

But on a team that needs a coach to press buttons on guys? Spo is not the guy.

Phil Jackson also failed to win an NBA title, or led his team into the NBA Finals without a superstar duo. See 1994-5 Bulls, 2006-07 Lakers, and 2011 Lakers.

Both are good strategist, and motivators. They are not in the same level as Popovich, Daly and Brown in terms of x and O.

Or Carlisle.

Carlisle is a crazy underrated coach.

I think he proved it the two years prior to LeBron joining them, they were 43-39 and 47-35 with some really bad rosters.

any coach becomes elite when they can sustain winning seasons and deep playoff runs while having efficient defensive and offensive sets

He's cool headed but I want to see how he does with less talent.

He did that in 08-09, before LeBron and Bosh. You got to give to him when it comes to defense I think. The Heat were a top 5-10 defensive team despite their lack of talent.

The offense was a suspect, and some of his rotation as a coach. But he got better over the years.

He did ok with less talent when he was coach of pre-Lebron Miami. His rosters sucked back then, one season I remember stoned Beasley was their second best player.

They started Jermaine O'neal at center too.

He has improved tremendously for sure.

The first year the team was embarassingly bad on offense and it started with him and his Mike Brown-like approach to Offense where his stars would just ISO. Remember Phil making fun of it?

Year 2, partially bc of Lebrons awful Finals, he realized he needed to implement an actual offense. Good on him for recognizing and trying to get better though. Still seems like they won with talent, and helped that Scott Brooks may have been even worse than him regarding rotations and adjustments.

Last year, I felt he legitimately deserved recognition. He did demonstrably well on plays after timeouts. They had great consistency, and the offense was really fluid with ball movement and execution.

I think the pressure of him realizing he could not lose the Finals twice accelerated his improvement. He's still seems like a terrible speaker and motivator to me, but he's definitely a good coach at this point.

Definitely. He designed Miami's offense, which has been producing at historic rates. Granted, you get LeBron, your offense is gonna be amazing, but there's such a sick rythm to the Heat's game that you can just tell how they bought into his system.

Isn't that what they always say about him in 2k12 commentary? Coach Spo...never too cold never too hot. Like he's goldilocks or something. :oldlol:

Hes done a nice job implementing the offense the past 2 years. Idk if hes really anything more than average though. Hes not bad.

Yeah. It helps to have LeBron, Wade, Bosh, and Ray Allen on the team to spread the floor. But those offensive sets are solid. Much much better than their first year together.
