with missing a game tying layup in game 7 of the Finals. We know Tim Duncan is one of them. But who else? We already know LeBron, Kobe, Durant, and Paul would be absolutely crucified by the media, message boards, etc. But is there anyone else in the NBA that is untouchable to criticism like Tim Duncan?

Lebron has 0 rings (lockout doesn't count, and neither does winning with the best SRS team in the league missing it's PG while you have most stacked team in league and need traveling 3 pointers to win), yet is treated like a good player :facepalm

I really can't think of anyone else right now. I guess being a classy player your whole career lets you get away with making championship CRIPPLING mistakes. I mean that fact this is never brought up is almost surreal. ISH would still trying to recover if Kobe or LeBron made that same mistake. But for good ol' Timmy, it gets swept under the rug.

As opposed to Lebron bricking a semi open 3 for the tie game and Ray Allen having to save the day? Only difference on the 2 plays was no one on the Spurs was there for the putback.

None. The answer is none. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker are the only stars immune to criticism like that. Imagine if someone like Westbrook choked like that?

When have you ever seen Duncan get criticized outside of the internet? Never.

Tim Duncan "got away" with it because he's a class act, doesn't act like a douchebag on or off the court, and has already proven himself as a winner multiple times. There's also nothing in his game to object to, like Kobe's chucking, Lebron's flops, or Durant's freethrows.

I don't feel the need to criticise a 37 year old Duncan for missing a layup because anyone can miss a shot.

What he did was carry his team for large portions of the series while Tony Parker (who is supposed to be 'the man') was getting shut down by LeBron and Ginobilli was just terrible. The only player who provided support to Duncan was Leonard, but it was Duncan carrying the load in game 6 and 7.

His overall level for the series, including the defensive anchor job he played, was incredible for a man that age. One miss to tie (and it wasn't even a buzzer beater or to win) doesn't change that.

It is certainly not on the level of, say, a LeBron James wetting the bed in pretty much every game of an NBA finals in his prime years and subsequently losing to the underdogs. That consistency in (shit) performances and his refusal to be aggressive deserved criticism; Duncan doesn't for one shot considering the way he played for the rest of the series.

How much credit is Duncan given for his accomplishments and level of play outside the internet? Enough? Definitely not in my opinion.

OP is right. No one ever critiques Tim Duncan. Him and his atrocious 2004 Olympics, leading us to bronze medal. Never leading San Antonio to back to back rings with an all-time great head coach, and rosters that featured: Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and David Robinson.

The brutal truth is that it's because nobody cares about Duncan. Guys like LeBron, Kobe, and Durant would never hear the end of it if it happened to them because people are more invested into these guys than they are to Duncan.

Let's say the Duncan does make the shot and the Spurs end up winning because of it. Then people would still be talking about it today. Why? Because it was against LeBron's team.

But what if the Spurs faced the Pacers instead? If he makes that shot in a game 7 and the Spurs win, would anyone still be talking about it today? I don't think so.

Nah, it wasn't just Kobe being smart. And it was being smart. I felt like he definitely didn't want any of a crazy, hyped, pissed Ron Artest.

Artest kind of bullied him. Kobe could've stood up to him without getting a technical foul.

We didn't see any of the tough guy act he gave scrawny, fake tough guy Matt Barnes the next year.

Well what do you want us to say? Duncan's a "choker" or he "can't handle the pressure"? The man's led his team to 4 championships beating Shaq, Lebron, Dirk, etc. His legacy has been cemented for years, one play well past his prime doesn't make a difference. The fact that he damn near beat prime Lebron at 37 years old just added to his legacy if anything.

Seriously? Kobe makes artest look like a hot tempered child.

Kobe wouldn't have gotten a technical? Ron was THROWN OUT, so hard to to say Kobe doesn't get a tech.

Besides it was a playoff game in the 4th with the Lakers up 10, ain't nobody got time for a pissing contest

You should thank your lucky stars that Lebron got away with the way he played that series (no confidence in his jump shot or vs IND). He'd be ripped into and criticized but for a Ray Allen 3. And Duncan would be the one with 5 rings and 4 FMVPs.

I'm over the loss as I never believed that Spurs had a REAL chance to win. Heat had Lebron, and Parker was injured. Duncan played unbelievably in games 6 and 7

30 pts 17 reb (13/21) 44:26
24 pts 12 reb 43:10

more minutes in both games that anyone on the Spurs except Leonard and at age 37. Missing one shot doesn't undo that - he's way past his prime (unlike Lebron).
