Paul George has leaped from a 12 PPG guy to a 17 PPG guy to a 24 PPG guy and a superstar...all in 2 years

Is he the front runner for this years MIP award?

I was actually having this conversation with someone at work today.

If a player goes from 5 PPG, to 20 PPG, to 35 PPG, why wouldn't he win MIP twice in a row?

He should easily win it SO FAR. We'll see how the rest of the season plays out.

What do you guys think of his MVP chances? He's been legit so far

He has a very balanced team with Stephenson, West, Hibbert (DPOY candidate) Scola, etc.

Having said that, he is definitely in the runnings right now, especially with a 16-2 record.

As for OPs question, I say why not? He has improved drastically, yet again. Who is the competition, is the better question. Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson come to mind:

Anthony Davis:
Last Year - 13.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.8 bpg
This Year - 18.8 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 3.6 bpg
*ppg increases nearly 5 ppg, rpg goes up 2 rpg, and bpg double from 1.8 to 3.6

Klay Thompson:
Last Year - 16.6 ppg, 42 % FG, 40 3P%
This Year: 21.2 ppg, 48 FG%, 47 3p%
*ppg increases nearly 5 ppg, FG% increases 6 points, 3P% increases 7 points.

If the Pacers finish as the top seed in the East with about 5-8 more wins than the 2nd seed, and his numbers stay the same, he should deserve it.

Edit: TheCorporation, do you have the stats for Klay's PPG on home and away games? I was watching a GS game and the commentator said it was a crazy drop in away games.

He won't win it again, especially if he's in the MVP discussion.

Off the top of my head these are some candidates;

Jeff Teague
Evan Turner
Bradley Beal
Anthony Davis
Lance Stephenson
Andre Drummond

PG is a legit superstar now? We haven't even made it to Christmas yet.

How about Jeff Green or Goran Dragic? I haven't checked their numbers but it seems like they've really improved...

can a player win MIP and MVP together? that'd be sick..league should also give the most regressed player award, we have a great candidate that went from franchise player to 3rd fiddle liability in a 2-year span

He hasn't made the same jump Anthony Davis has.

That said, his jump this year is bigger than last year. Is what it is, I'll take 3rd in the MVP and the closest thing to a superstar since prime JO over another MIP any day. We can win a ring with this kid, he's an undeniable superstar. And we've got him locked up for another 5 1/2 years.

The jump this kid's made is unfathomable to me. I've been on board with him being a big piece since about a year and half in, but never, ever saw this coming. NEVER thought he'd be a #1 option on a contender.

Has a team won two MIP in a row? Lance is making a case ...not back to back, but the Bullets won a handful every other year, the Pacers and Magic have almost alternated the last decade or so.

Lance has definitely improved a lot, but he's down at like, I don't know, like 6th on the list this year. Still way too inconsistent, one night he's ready to be option 1B to George, next night he doesn't deserve minutes. But he's come a long way, we'll get there. Don't wanna say I expect it, but I think next year, and through the course of this year, he becomes a full fledged consistent 2nd option. Still lets his emotions dictate his game way too much at this point, but he's on the come up.

Forget MIP he's a serious MVP candidate.

Superstar? Yeah right. Stop overrating wing players because they are "flashy."

Remembered people comparing him to a T-MAC kind of player. Hope he doesn't peak too soon and regress.

:biggums:

Dude is a superstar no doubt with his showing last year against Lebron.

Gave Lebron a bigger battle than anyone outside of Pierce and Durant.

Scary thing is he is only going to get better from here.

Chances are Bledsoe takes MIP if things hold as they are know, but PG is definitely budding into an elite player and will be right there with him in voting.
