Baseball contracts are insane. I bet in three years Seattle will be trading him back to the Yankees because they just don't make enough money to justify paying 24 mil per to a declining 34 year-old for the next 7 years. I don't follow baseball outside of Boston so I could be off but I don't recall Seattle being some team on the verge that just needed one more big bat to make the series.
I really don't get the logic here. If you manage to vastly outbid the frigging Yankees shouldn't you pause to think that maybe you're making a mistake? The only way he's going to be worth it is through a significant HGH regimen.

He probably had a hand in it at least. Jay-Z's edge over his contemporaries in rap was always that he understood the business side and thus always got good contracts for himself. That's how he got so rich and why he ended up taking over Def Jam. He's a smart businessman.

They need another big signing for this signing to make sense. Maybe Nelson Cruz, Beltran, Choo. Because teams will just pitch around Cano.

1.) So Dame and Biggs had nothing to do with that? He got [truly] rich when he sold out his homeboys actually.
2.) My speculation is that he is a figure head...I don't trust the myth of his business acumen after he lied about the Nets. He was acting like HE brought the Nets to Brooklyn and he was a big part of it when he was really a less than 2% owner--really he was the mascot for a much richer [and more gangster I hear] Russian guy.
3.) Took over Def Jam? Def Jam sucks and the best things he did were steal an artist away from Dame [Kanye], sign J. Cole, and get Rihanna on board. Not really any ground breaking accomplishments.
4.) Can he read legal contracts? What area of business is his expertise? People say he is a good businessman and i don't understand exactly where he excels at besides making money off of trends and a stagnant genre of music. where 40 year olds like he, Diddy, and Snoop can still get away with making formulaic, unrealistic bullshit.

He excels at making money. That pretty much defines what it means to be a good businessman. If he didn't understand business there would be no difference between him and a guy like Nas. Nas might even have been a better MC. But Jay-Z has way more $. Why?

Mariner fans are fiening for a contender, if they can show the fans they're serious about winning by signing a couple more guys as well. Then i'm sure fans will come for at least the first season. Plus if you win games then of course Seattle fans will go

1.) His last album was trash...he's from one of the poorest communities in the country yet he makes songs for rich guppies.
2.) He sold out his people at Rocafella
3.) He wifed up my boo Beyonce:lol
4.) Memph Bleek/Amil
5.) He is definitely a sharp person but he makes music about selling dope and things that are detrimental to our people yet I am sure he would not advise Blu Ivy like that. And I'm not putting the onus on him to be a role model but damn man you rich now you can talk about something else--he's super stale now.
*He is one of the best rappers in my book but a lot of his image is contrived. I doubt he is the businessman people give him credit for I see him more of an opportunist. He benefitted from Biggie, Big L, and Pac dying....*not blaming him but just pointing it out.
Which one is it man?
Anyways its just rap music regardless. Who cares. I just think its amazing to see where he is and what he does, especially seeing where he came from. GOT CANO 240 MILLLI!

The Yankees got out-bid by 70 million. If someone offered Papi 70 mil more he'd probably be going to a new team. He will also probably be hated in Seattle for the entire second half of his contract that he will hilariously fail to live up to. But after his career ends there's no way he will be able to make this kind of money and guys like him can have hundreds, even thousands of family and friends that are counting on him to bring in that huge money. You can't say no to all that cash.

What you are failing to understand is that a businessman is an opportunist. That's why they call it a "big break." Something happens that a guy has a chance to profit off of and he does. Whether or not you can take advantage of the opportunities you are presented with dictates whether or not you are a good businessman.
Biggie and Pac leaving a void (Big L not so much, no disrespect to his memory but he was not as close to the mainstream as those two) probably enhanced Jay-Zs prospects but he's definitely not the only rapper whose fame grew after those two died. If anyone has a rap career that could just be put on their passing it would be Diddy.

Again, I see your point and value your insight, however I disagree slightly. An opportunist is not always a businessman in my book. Living off of reputation and creating opportunities to make money off of others doesn't necessarily make you a businessman.
In America it's not about what you know it's about who you know and many rich people are plain ole lucky and have few real skills in the business world.

He's supposed to be worth a half billion dollars and grew up in the projects. To make it that far, if you didn't do some business I have no idea who did. You can disapprove of his methods, I'm sure if we looked over his career we could find a few things that were bad, or questionable, or whatever. But I'm just looking at him as a businessman right now, and as such he's done well.
