View Full Version : Asik to be traded by next Weds/Thurs

ICYMI: Rockets will trade Asik next Wednesday or Thursday. And do not discount Cleveland/Varejao. Would be perfect fit next to Howard.
Andy V next to Howard. I'm not sure how that sounds for the spacing problem.
Cleveland, Im not sure why they do it unless theyre very sure Bynum isnt gonna last the whole season.
That clogs the paint on D which is good, but doesn't help against teams with a good shooting big (like Portland).

wouldnt andy v next to howard look pretty similar to jordan hill next to howard.

He'd probably come off the bench and backup both the 4 and the 5.
Varejao's an amazing cutter for a big man and does a little bit of everything, I don't think he'd have any problem playing well next to Howard. He's also been hitting the mid range J at a great clip this year, albeit a small sample size.

Andy has an underrated midrange game. His 15 to 17-footers have been pretty money the last couple seasons. He's one of the best P&R defenders in the league and has been for years. He shows hard and gets back. Also, he's an elite rebounder... maybe the best pure offensive rebounder in the NBA.
He's a guy you just love having on your team. It would be a sad day for the Cavs if the trade happened. Not that Asik isn't a nice player, but Andy is pretty beloved in Cleveland.
It would make sense for the Cavs because Asik is only 27.
Plus, Tristan is able to do a lot of things Andy does, so it would enable him to step into a larger role.
I have mixed feelings about this, though it would probably be the right longterm move for the Cavs.
Only problem with Andy V is his a bit of an Injury prone player.. but yeah,, still looks good.. Problem with asik going to Cleveland is that he will come off the bench as well...

Yeah, the more I think about this, the less sense it makes from an Asik/Cavs standpoint. Bynum and Thompson make up the starting frontline for the Cavs whether this trade happens or not. Asik is unhappy in Houston because he's not starting or getting as many minutes, I presume?
How is his circumstance going to change here?
And, Asik would do nothing for the Cavs' biggest issue right now, which is the lack of shooting/floor spacing. What they really need is a Ryan Anderson type player.
Asik is a good, but he's a defensive specialist who provides virtually nothing offensively.
I have to think if the Cavs get involved in this, it would be a three-team trade with us getting some other piece. :confusedshrug:
Cavs get Ryan Anderson
Rockets get Anderson Varejao
Pelicans get Omer Asik
:confusedshrug:
All making around the same salary. All have been rumored to be on the trading block. Each provides a service to said team.

I would be surprised if it happened. Asik wants to start. Cavs want more floor spacing.
It's a nice long term move for the cavs but losing Andy would really hurt them in the short term.

i was hoping Varaejo would somehow get to the Knicks.
Cav's also want to give Bennett playing time, i read something about them wanting to start him at 4 but i don't know what they'd do with Tristan then.
i think Varaejo will do better in Houston than with the Cav's this year. Cav's have some of the most hot/cold chucking guards in the league. the way they chuck sometimes is ridiculous, and Mike Brown's offense can look so bad sometimes especially when Kyrie and Waiters are missing which is like every other game.
Bynum is such a beast, i forgot how much a freak he is. its really like some high school center playing against middle schoolers. only if he could run 30-40min/game. anyways having Asik to come in when he's out is probably better than running with Varaejo as the Center.

Yeah, with what money? They would have to trade a bigger contract like Bosh to make the salaries match, no?

Haslem could be a nice compliment to Dwight, they can add Anthony for filler and they have Philly's #1 along with some future picks they could send.
Chalmers / Cole
Wade / Allen
LBJ / Battier
Bosh / Beasley
Asik / Andersen

I would like for the Hawks to keep Milsap.
Next summer we will have enough cap space to sign a max level player (and can create even more by moving smaller contracts like Louis Williams or DeMarre Carroll - another 7.5 million if both are moved).
The Hawks will have Nogueira coming over and we have the Nets first round pick, which hopefully will be high in the draft.
So if the Hawks got Julius Randle to go with Horford, Millsap and Nogueira, our frontcourt would be really solid.

The Nets will still probably win the Atlantic (1 game back of thus the 4 seed and starting to get healthy). I think you're expectations are way high. 15-19 for that pick is my guess.

Pretty much what I was going to say. I have not seen a lot of Asik since he came to Houston but I loved him in Chicago. I would hate to see Andy go but they all have to some time. Houston fans, you would love him on your team. He plays with more heart defensively than anyone I have seen in the league since Rodman.

OKC has done the hard work for Houston. They've developed Lamb into a great rotation player, high efficiency scorer who is only getting better. The Dallas pick could be very valuable. Asik has a 15 million last year contract, which is WAY overpaying, hence the Perkins contract (which is I believe only mill) to even out.
The things I see possibly standing in the way the most are:
1. OKC front office is too smart/tight to pay Asik 15 mil.
2. OKC front office see Lamb as an important part of the future.
3. Houston won't trade Asik to a contender (though I don't think it should matter, Houston aren't making the finals any time in the next 2 years anyway)
4. Perkins is ****ing Scott Brooks, which would explain a lot.

But Houston wants a face up 4 to compliment Dwight. And trading Asik to a contender like OKC helps them out big time. And it would hurt your team the Blazers. Heck Blazers could really use Asik as well. Not trying to make Asik as this great Center. Think he is an upgrade to what certain contenders already have.

OKC don't lack height overall, just at the C position which Asik would obviously fix. They are actually an insanely long team with Ibaka, Durant, Westbrook and Thabo all having insane reach at their positions.

They need a center that can play like a modern type center with height who can run screen & rolls, yada yada yada. Height has always been their weakness even when Jeff Green was still on the team. For a fast-paced team, I think Asik will fit perfectly fine with Westbrook & KD, Perkins is just slowing them down. He has become a solid center to a backup/3rd string center.
Ibaka at 6'10 (?), & Perkins at 6'10? This isn't the heat where they can easily fix that with their scorers to make up with their disadvantages. Obviously, OKC have lost all their 3rd scorers.

Lamb is not a great rotation player, he would barely play off Houston's bench. Asik 15 mill over 2 years is overpaid?? Elite post defense, paint presence, top 3 rebounder in the league and will give you a double double given 30 minutes a game.

lol you have no idea what you're talking about. Easy buckets against the Rockets come from turnovers and offensive rebounds. Teams shoot poorly against the Rockets. They hold their opponents to one of the lowest fg% in the league. Teams score over a 100 points bc of the pace the Rockets play.

When Asik signed his big contract with the Rockets he thought he was going to be there main big man. They gave him all this money, he got more minutes and more game starts than ever in his career. And he had a very decent full season...
He averaged 10 PPG, 12 RPG on 54% shoot with 1 BPG in 30 minutes of play
...then the Rockets got Howard, which in theory pretty much demotes Asik back to the bench. Asik threw a fit and cried and whined so the team tried to start Asik and Howard together. It obviously didn't work at all. Now Asik is pretty much refusing to play and it's being reported that he has a "bruised right thigh". He's had this bruise the last 4 games and he's not going to play the next game either.
So the Rockets have no leverage at all. They're trying to trade a player who is quitting on them because they told him one thing, then they do another by acquiring Howard, then Asik acts like a baby refusing to play. Dude, you're getting paid $8 million this season and $15 million next season to be a NBA player. Man up.
Personally, I don't want a man on the team with that type of attitude.

He's upset the Rockets signed Dwight, meaning he'd almost be a lock to come off the bench. The kid grabbed almost 12 RPG in just 30 MPG last season. He's an elite rebounder and is only 27. It's a shame Asik hates Dwight's guts because on opening night, they combined for 40 rebounds with Asik grabbing 14 in just 26 minutes.
