What do you think about tha state of rap and r&b? Rap and r&b haven't been consistently good since tha 90s and early 00s. We went from soul singers singing songs with passion to uplift us or just classic baby makin' music with boys 2 men and mariah carey to shitty autotune with future and drake and repetitive annoying Rihanna. What happened r&b?:biggums: What about rap? we went from 2pac and old Nas to lil Wayne, rick ross and overrated jay z:facepalm. What tha phuck happened rap??:biggums: What do u think about this? does it need to change and be revived? Is it surprisingly in a good place? let me know...

I agree that underground iz better and do have gems, but I think it don't have that impact like tha 90s, mainly cuz of mainstream. Underground rap have to do better hits wise than them fake ass garbage mainstream artists. They have to have that all around greatness about them. Its just no new innovators in this line of work anymore man. rap in tha 90s simply touched people wayy,,more now, and tha underground simply have to step their game up especially for tha hard headed new generation who just think money iz everything. Something gotta give. Even R&B is watered down, there's no more Anita bakers and mary j. bliges out there. Plus male singers today only consist of chris brown, Trey songz and old ass r. Kelly we actually had a catalog of singers back then.

Most forms of media have been declining in quality with time. R&B sucks now because advances in studio technology mean singers don't need to be able to sing as well as they used to. Ever heard Rihanna live? She's not even R&B IMO and never has been.
Rap sucks now because of the internet and focus on beats and catchy hooks instead of strong lyrics. Rick Ross can't rap for shit but because he has hard beats people like him even though he's a proven fraud. Guys like Soulja Boi get deals through youtube because they can make hits even though their non-radio songs suck.
"What about rap? we went from 2pac and old Nas to lil Wayne, rick ross and overrated jay z:facepalm." I don't understand how you say we went from Pac and Nas to Ross and Jay like Jay didn't have 4 albums in the 90s and was a platinum seller while Pac was alive. I agree he sucks now but he has nothing to rap about anymore because he's no longer a hustler and there are only so many rich guy stories you can tell.

That's tha damn problem, jay z should stop rapping. Plus Jay Z was a biter anyway, that niguh stoled mad niguhs rhymes and shit, and he wasn't all that great except for reasonable doubt. Internet iz like a gift and a curse, but tha problem iz that we have to turn that shit into a gift cuz like u said made wack rappers has turned it into a curse. Autotune iz one of tha worst things that ever happened to, mainly cuz u can't feel it from tha artist soul anymore. I agree tho people have to stop being brainwashed by any ol song cuz of tha beat especially if tha lyrics don't talk about nuttin. People have to listen to tha wordz as well just like pac said when he was in jail.

I agree 100%, but it's better when the good stuff was in the main stream.
It was just way more fun listening to the new Tupac album in 1995 when I knew that everyone and their mommas was listening to it and that it was going to influence the whole industry.
I don't really get that same energy from listening to albums from underground artists, even though I actually think they are better than Tupac for example.
And of course, when the good stuff was in the mainstream, you could hear it when you were out (at stores, sporting events, theme parks, malls, etc). Today you go to a bball game and Lil Wayne is the most played artist.

You're missing the main point.
Back then one didn't have to rely on the underground for good shit. The mainstream was giving you top quality music.

When records sales for the mainstream took over the record companies responded. Now you get trash music. Simple supply and demand, the consumers didnt want to buy music from the lyrically responsible artist. Then the artist stopped becoming responsible for lyrical contents but making a pop song.
After '94 consumers and record execs took away hip hop diversity and lyrical responsibility.

R&B took a turn for the worse because record companies wanted to save money. Record companies took away R&B Bands, then R&B groups, then R&B band music (people playing instruments), it became solo artist driven, totally studio type music. 'Putas helps the voices, no one really had to be able to sing but artist became created with looks more so than talent.

I definitely agree. Them record execs are messing it up for us, that's why they promote Nutting but dumb songs that makes no sense, and brag about nuttin but money and puhcee, and iz making it worse for tha next generation coming up because we no longer have them type of positive and real messages in mainstream like that at all anymore, especially with lyrics. At tha same time us fans and listeners have to stop paying these wack artists albums and shit, stop going to their damn concerts which they get payed a lot for, even speak out against these corporate niguhs, that's why they still selling and taking ova cuz many of us won't stand up for what we really want and need to hear.

yea true. Groups have definitely diminished thru tha years. Studio definitely taken over with studio effects over instruments. We definitely lost that essence.

There's been articles that support everything that Rameek is stating so it aint ramblings from a nostalgic poster.
It also used to cost more to produce a record so labels were more selective on who they signed.
The best thing this era has brought us is giving aspiring artists a more viable platform to showcase themselves. The bad part, most of them suck.

yea music these dayz produces tons of garbage with an inch of gold:facepalm plus back tgen there were at least a variety and balance of good rap, mediocrity of rap, and just a few bad rappers, now its just a major problem and a lot of copycats, no real originality.

Sorry, but copycats were always an issue on all forms of entertainment.
Some of it can be blamed on influence, but the majority is labels and artists jumping on a popular trend. We saw tons of that in the "Golden Era" of rap as well. The main difference was the average mainstream rapper was better than today's.

My bad bro I should of been more specific. I meant copycats that do bad music, I agree that they were always copycats period, but even back then we had more originality compared to now good or bad.

Excuse me, what? This isn't even subjective or up for debate. 2pac died in 1996, the same year Reasonable Doubt was released, Jay Z's first album, which didn't even go platinum until 2002.
Jay-Z was NOT a platinum selling rapper while 2pac was alive.
His fist album was released less than 3 months before Pac died. :coleman:
thank you:facepalm

Not to mention that Reasonable Doubt wasn't considered a classic until way after its release. It didn't get the same hype that Illmatic did. Jay did a Lil Wayne on everybody and made everyone believe it was a classic by constantly repeating and telling us so (although I am one that agrees with the sentiment).

Kids these days just don't know. I actually feel sorry for all these kids that think hip hop is a bunch of cAts with suspect tendencies rapping about money(on their first album) and having singing on every god damn song. And the beats??!!!!? Most of the shit wouldn't pass for watered down r and b back in the day. At least lately some of these bassy miamI bass beats are bearable. Straight garbage.
And the names. ... Went from big l to lil everything and young everything. ???!!? Crazy how many lil's and young's there are. Super suspect.

The state of Hip-Hop and R&B is not very good. I'll start with R&B.
R&B has been on a decline since the mid 90s. Really, we can go back to the late 80s. The R&B band has been gone for almost 30 freaking years, 30 YEARS!! That's crazy. That is slightly around the time Hip-Hop took of into the mainstream ... do we have something here ...
Since 1988, there have only been a total of two R&B bands that have had an impact in popular music, Toni Tony Tone and Mint Condition. If you want, you can count Guy and Jodeci as two members from each group played instruments. Teddy Riley (keyboards), Damien Hall (drums) of Guy and the Swing brothers (piano, drums) of Jodeci. But that is reaching really.
Really, only one was going to survive into the 90s. Hip-Hop or R&B. Hip-Hop was much cheaper to make, You don't need multiple musicians backing up an artist, we can just get one dude to make beats on a program. So Hip-Hop it was and that was the end on R&B as we know it. It slowly started to die out. R&B in 1989 was totally different than it was just 5 years earlier.
In 1984, top R&B artist were The Time, Prince, The Jacksons, Midnight Star, Cameo, Zapp, Kool & the Gang, Gap Band, The Deele, Rick James and DeBarge. All self contained bands or artist.
Five years later in 1989, top R&B artist were Al. B. Sure, Troop, Janet Jackson, New Edition, Karyn White, Peebles, Bobby Brown, Guy, Babyface and The Boys.
You can't say the same from the years 1979 to 1984.
