View Full Version : Poll: What do you call Soda/Pop/Coke?
Breezy

Growing up in a small town outside of L.A. We called everything Coke (every sugary carbonated beverage).
It would be like
Dude1: "Hey do you want a Coke?"
Dude2: "Sure what kind?"
Dude1: "We've got pepsi, mountain dew, orange soda, dr. pepper"
Since moving I've never met another person who used that terminology. Everyone else calls them Soda or Pop.
So what do you call it?
1. Coke
2. Pop
3. Soda
4. Other (Why do you call it other? That's pretty weird)

Pop. When I moved to Dallas people laughed at me for calling it pop. I didn't see what the big deal was. I guess they were calling it soda at that time.

Well most of Canada and the upper midwest of the US are neither rednecks or 90 years old so I don't know where you go that idea from lol. Maybe it's different where you are, but up here redneck is associated with some hick from Alabama or something. lol
And ya, never heard a Canadian call it anything but pop. Americans up here are mixed. When I've gone to the states it depends on the region (Penn., Miami, Wisconsin, Baltimore, etc.) and I think it's 50/50 from what I remember as well.

I've always heard soda (nj and philly) so looks right. My cousin's family visited from Florida and called it pop, and it's apparently a "soda" state, but I think their mom is from Ohio so she probably just turned them into Floridian outcasts.

I was just gonna post that map. I can confirm that everyone in New York, EVERYONE, says soda. No one ever says pop or coke (as generic for soda).
As a matter of fact, I am aware that others call it 'pop', although I rarely ever hear that. I didn't even know some people use "coke" as generic. Huh? How does that even work? "I'd like a coke please. What type? Ginger Ale." lolomgwtf?

I really don't care, but everyone here calls it soda.
If you want a pop, you might be talking about multiple things. If you want a soda, even people who call it coke or pop know what you want, every time(unless they're just stubbornly attached to a word for whatever reason).

Soda = Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, etc.
Pop = I'm retarded.
Seriously. I use to work at a food joint during my teenage years and this girl walked up to me and said "pop". I was like, what? "Pop", she repeated. She looked at me like I was stupid or something. Parents have got to teach these kids the correct and proper terminology.
Well most of Canada and the upper midwest of the US are neither rednecks or 90 years old so I don't know where you go that idea from lol. Maybe it's different where you are, but up here redneck is associated with some hick from Alabama or something. lol

So "pop" came first? So it's settled pop > soda.
Just as "pop" sounds dumb to people who have said "soda" all of their life, "soda" sounds dumb to me. "Hey, can I get a soooooooduh please" lol

Soda: short for sodium, an active ingredient in it
Pop: the sound made when the carbonated beverage is opened
One name relates to the composition of the drink, the other relates to a ****ing sound it makes. The latter is fine if you're slightly less evolved.

Why would you call it pop? Do you call cars "Vrooms" and phones "Ring-Rings" because of the sound they make?
Why would you call it coke if it isn't specifically Coca-Cola you're talking about?

Why would you call it coke if it isn't specifically Coca-Cola you're talking about?
Because Coke is so ubiquitous that it becomes shorthand for the thing that it is. The same way people use the term "Kleenex" when referring to tissues of different brands. Or Podcast when referring to internet radio on other services besides Itunes.
I didn't know this would get contentious. I thought we could have more of an information sharing experience but in the spirit of this Thread.
They are Soda's, Remotes, and Sub's. If you say anything else do the world a favor and put a bullet in your mouth right now.
