My first time seeing this sketch. Doesn't look that bad but hey, can't piss of Lorne Michaels. If only they knew what they had. He improved the cop into the gay character he did on Beverly Hills cop and later on In Living Color.
PS. Why does he look like a member of the Culture Club.

so he improvised a bit and got fired because of that?

Well, he didn't just improvise with a line. He changed the whole character.
He was fed up because he wasn't getting any sketches on the air. Looking at the cast from 1985, he should have been getting the bulk of the sketches as only Dennis Miller is comparable.

I don't get it. So he was not suppose to act like a gay cop? It looks like nothing special.

It was supposed to be a clever play on the board game. I can see what their intentions were, but perhaps poorly executed.

No, it's not funny at all.

He was fired because he had low dials. That whole cast had poor chemistry, so I wouldn't really say it was the fault of many on the show at the time. Given better circumstances and a different mix of writers and performers, that era of SNL might have been different.
The issue then, is similar to the issue recently of having a weak show. When the other circuits of entertainment get highly trendy, the material is used, done, and the jokes get old by the time a show airs. Back then it was cable-TV reaching record audiences, this last go it was streaming video services, like youtube.

He should be fired for that. The character was clearly not supposed to be gay, and you can't just ad lib....it's not his show to do that.
But it's true, Damon Wayans was fired, SNL never recovered, the show was canceled, and no one has ever heard about it or talked about the show ever again. Damn shame! Lorne Michaels...what a moron.

SNL in general just isn't funny. There might be one funny skit the entire show which is completely eclipsed by the other 7 skits that make you cringe and drag on for what feels like forever.
