Ski is freaking dangerous. Tried it once and it almost hurt me bad.

Hope for the best.

This. Tried snowboarding once and was on my ass the whole time. I can't believe there are people who slide down the mountain at ski resorts.. Looks scary as shit.

When i started skiing hardly anyone bothered with a helmet. I've skied since the age of 5. Can ski most mountains comfortably and have worn a helmet maybe 3-4 times (it is shit). Never had an injury skiing in spite of this and love tree skiing as well.

This is very sad and I hope he makes it.

Is so hard to believe because as a race driver it's very dangerous and for Michael to escape the dangers of racing, only to be hurt so badly in a leisurely activity.

Thoughts and prayers with him.

A leading neurosurgery specialist has described Michael Schumacher's condition as "very dangerous" and warned his injuries may take several days to "reach their peak".

Christopher Chandler, of the London Neurosurgery Partnership, told the Press Association the haematoma and bruising Schumacher suffered could cause "ferocious swelling.

"An intra-cranial haematoma is a blood clot, which causes swelling and pressure on the brain," he said. "The scenario may be that he had a blood clot in his brain that required immediate removal, which would explain the surgery.

"By bilateral lesions, I suspect they mean contusions or bruising to the brain. That bruising of the brain, which you can see on a scan, causes ferocious swelling and that is really serious. [Cerebral] contusions are often the most significant injury. Once you remove the clot, the swelling carries on and bruising precipitates and propagates that swelling.

"If you have a brain injury with sufficient severity to cause a coma, that indicates a very serious situation. The longer a patient is in a coma, the less likely they are to make a full recovery. You can't say that they won't recover, and you can't say they won't be brain-damaged, but an injury such as bilateral bruising, which means on both sides of the brain, is very serious, and can be very dangerous.

"Brain swelling takes a number of days to reach its peak. The brain has a rigid unyielding box around it - the skull - which allows no room for growth, making swelling very, very dangerous. And once that injury occurs it's a vicious circle where a little bit of swelling causes more pressure, which causes more swelling, more pressure, and it starts to accelerate and affect vital parts of the brain.

"When that happens, you are in really deep trouble, but this man received probably the best possible care that you could imagine in the circumstances.

"He had the brain injury and within minutes a team of medics were there and they airlifted him to hospital. Within half an hour he was assessed and being flown to the neurological unit in Grenoble."

Agreed on baseball and to a lesser extent on golf, although Woods still has more name recognition as a sports figure. Extremely well-paid and well-known. Nike throws mountains of cash at him to wear their shit, they don't throw it to some helmeted race car driver in some foreign racing league.

I bet the ratio of MLB/PGA viewers to U.S. total population is far greater than the ratio of F1 viewers to world population though. Far, far greater.

I haven't lived in East Asia (but many work connection to Japan) so maybe I'm wrong there. I could always talk about F1 with the Japanese (I couldn't talk about baseball) and the majority was well informed.

I lived in the middle east and black Africa. No one knew who tiger is, but they all are car crazy. Mj is an other category. in his time you could watch NBA in public TV in many countries around the world, and you always have a at leats 10-15% bball fans in any country.

Yeah, the entire redneck and white trash population of the U.S. is temporarily drained on race days so they can congregate around a track and engage in alcohol poisoning. Fortunately, they make up a relatively small portion of the country.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/nascar-on-fox-2013-highest-rated-most-watched-sport-in-season-13th-straight-season-060713

NASCAR on FOX concluded its 2013 portion of the season as the highest-rated and most-watched sport in-season for the 13th straight season, according to figures released today by Nielsen Media Research. The complete 2013 NASCAR on FOX Sprint Cup season averaged a potent 4.8/10 household rating/share for the third time in four years (2010, 2012 & 2013).

I've never watched an F1 race, a golf tournament, or even a tennis match in my entire life, but I know who Michael Schumaker, Tiger Woods and Roger Federer are. When you get to that level of superstardom in your sport, it's almost irrelevant how many people watch it, and more of a how good the marketing is of that person.

Racing is huge in Japan, and by that the premier racing league is well known. Most years some Japanese drivers participate.

I bet the ratio of MLB/PGA viewers to U.S. total population is far greater than the ratio of F1 viewers to world population though. Far, far greater.

The accessibility of TV is at minimum 90% in the US. I guess worlwide it's about 10-20% so ofc something that runs on US TV will have proportionally more exposure than anything worldwide.

I hope Schumi fully recovers, great driver and by most accounts an awesome guy.

Looking at pics of Schumacher skiing he always wore a helmet meant for ski racing which is designed for skiing on groomed slopes where the possibility of hitting something like a rock is minimal at best. The helmet is designed for protecting the head from things like the gates on a course or getting whacked by your own ski or ski pole in a crash. The helmets are very lightly padded and extremely form fitting.

Kind of like the difference between a helmet meant for motorcycle riding vs. auto racing, outwardly they look the same but one is made for sliding down the road and being hit from multiple angles vs being strapped in your seat and your head repeatedly hitting the same object like the roll over structure over and over again
