Who's the better player? Both of these 2 talented scorers led their respective Nuggets team in the conference Finals. English was more efficient.

Melo, pretty comfortably. Better all round scorer and he can step outside and still knock down the shot.

without looking at stats......wouldn't be able to tell you who is better
melo is an 80s small forward trapped in modern era
back in english's day....if you were a scorer..fans left you alone and didn't bring up what you couldn't or wouldn't do......
melo would seem to have the better all around arsenal...he has bulk and agility to play in the post...and he has many facets of english's game
he's more versatile than english
nuggets of the old school era were like the nash/stat suns.......run and gun all day....not thinking about defense one bit

Nostalgia strikes again. Melo easily.
English wasn't even a top 10 player in his days.

He has a better case than English did. Melo is generally considered withing that range throughout his career

Yeah, not buying it.
Nothing is "easily" about this comparison. I'm pretty sure English had a number of years where he was ranked Top 10.

Not really.
Anthony is actually a more well rounded player. I laugh at this thread because i guarantee most of you never even saw him play. YES THAT PERSON I NEVER SAW IS BETTER THAN ANTHONY. Sure, ok.

Weak argument.
I'm sure many here didn't watch guys like Baylor, Erving, and Bird play. Are they not better ?

Yes, but people are basing it on nothing. They are just in the thread to bash Melo. Do you think people did analysis on Alex English's game? They just saw Melo and said "other guy". 90% of all of it. Kurple, good poster but he's a young guy who didn't watch Alex English. It's silly.

Re: Melo English being top ten
In MVP votes English was top ten
'83: 6th
'86: 8th
He also had finishes at 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th. He had 3 all-NBA 2nd team appearances.
3 years in top 10 for PER none for WS/48.
Melo has two top 10 MVP finishes
'10: 6th
'13: 3rd
plus 13th, 14th and 15th place finishes. He has had two 2 all-NBA 2nd team appearances thus far (has made some 3rd teams too but they didn't exist in English's day, and that's likely outside top 10 anyway).
One year top ten for PER none for WS/48.
Anyway right now I'd favour English.

I would say Alex. With Dan and Kiki scoring points left and right, Alex would slip in and score 25-30 points along with those guys and you would not even know it. You could look at the box scores and see Issel with 25, Vandeweghe with 30, and English with 30.

Yeah, because picking English is hating on Melo. ... besides, it's not like the Melo camp here isn't biased.
I've done this argument before with another poster and we were agreement that it's a good debate. Just not this "not close" and "easily" shit. If your more confident in one player, that's different.

English did most of that after he turned 28 and started playing in a gimmick offense that scored 120 but gave up 130 on defense. At the same point of his career melo has accomplished much more.
Also finishing 6 and 8 in MVP voting doesn't really mean he was a top 10 player. He finished ahead of Jabbar one of those years. Doesn't mean he was a better player than KAJ.

Are you obtuse? I'm not going to debate because again, 90% of the people in this thread (not you) don't know jack shit about Alex English. They are just picking him to bash Melo. I'm glad you are knowledgable and not, but most people are. Look at the first few posts. This is a bash Melo thread. That you don't want to acknowledge that doesn't change it.
I'm not debating with people who have agenda to bash, it's silly. Enjoy though if you want to. You'll find most people pick Alex English. I'm sure.

That's fine, you don't have to debate anything.
Are you going address that the Melo camp right now isn't just as biased and trying to push an agenda ?

At their best I'd pick English even though it's pretty close.
Melo is a more versatile scorer (you can't really blame English for not being a 3pt threat though let's say, he didn't come up with the line) but Alex had a better shot selection, you won't find many close-range shooters better than him and he had a really good mid-range game with that unorthodox jumper, also a better ft shooter than Anthony, rebounding is a wash and English was a better passer, neither a good defensive player but Alex tried harder and played better on that end, especially considering that Denver employed what you can call a run-n-gun system. Both led their teams deep into the playoffs and had some great performances.
Also when you consider consistency and longevity, gotta go with English.
Gotta say English is underrated because he was a collected dude, not that flashy and went about his business, delivering on the court, also played in Denver in a time with many great teams and superstars. He's the one with the most amount of points scored in the 80s, great baller.

I only watched a game and some highlights of Alex English.
But from what I watched, Alex looked like he was a more willing passer than Melo. While Alex gets a bunch of credit for his sharp shooting, he did a lot of his work in the post from the games that I watched. He could make the shot with his man in his face a loot, which I found entertaining. He had crazy length it seems and shot the ball way over his head similar to Bird.
In this aspect, he was probably more efficient than Melo, even though Melo is more polished. English could also beat you off the dribble, but his ball handling wasn't great but solid enough for him to drive on you. His runner was unguardable, lol.
Anyway, he is better than Melo at the mid range game. I would say he is a better finisher around the paint, but less flashy on it. I never seen him do crazy lay ups. But I didn't see a lot of games on him to judge that for certain, but the stats and stories do back up from what I seen. He didn't play any D. But this isn't a fair comparison entirely because I haven't seen enough of him.
But Melo is stronger and he bang more to get the rebounds. He is much more polish in the post and dribbling. He is more versatile as well. But Alex never shot the 3. He probably could shoot, but I dunno.

If English had been hyped as one of the great players in the game people would have brought up what he could and couldn't do. He was just regarded as a high scoring small forward as Carmelo should be.

I saw him play many times. Anthony is better because of the 3 point shot. English wasn't really a long distance shooter. He liked to shoot at or near painted area which made him a very efficient scorer, but his Nugget teams rarely won anything of value, and were usually not in contention. Run and gun, and not much offense. It changed a bit later in his career, but not much.
