Getting on that Kwame Brown level...

Way worse than Kwame. Kwame is actually a solid post defender and solid rebounder. He has a role in the NBA.
Bennett looks like he will be out of the NBA soon.

The Raptors should trade for him, say offer Patrick Patterson.
It would be a risk for the Raptors, but maybe a change of scenery and getting him back in his hometown would change his attitude.

Aside from MCW, Steve Adams and a couple others the whole draft class has been a piece of shit so far you can't even blame the Cavs since nearly everyone else in the lottery is garbage. The only player who could maybe save the draft from complete embarrasment could be Noel.
Even all the other hyped players
German Rondo - D-League
Mclemore - SG version of Thomas Robinson

Yeah... it's an improvement. He's actually shooting 40% from the field in December. Just not getting a ton of minutes yet.
He started the season making 1 of his first 21 shots... and then he was moved to the bench until he could get in better shape. His minutes are starting to go back up and he's playing a little better.

Give him time. He probably won't live up to his draft position, but if he can regain his confidence and get minutes, he's not fundamentally incapable of being a good contributor in the league.

There's really no defending that pick. It was a WTF moment in draft night, and is even a bigger WTF moment 6 months later.
Maybe he'll prove us all wrong and be a late bloomer who flourishes as an offensive star....but I doubt it. Cavs should have drafted Noel and called it a day. Tank for another high pick and keep the ball moving with this re-build they got going on.

He needs minutes.. If hes in better shape, play him. Its not like what theyre doing now is anything special..
I like that the Cavs didnt tank again though and tried to actually compete, unfortunately Bynum didnt work out.

I think that Anthony Bennett is tanking so that he can land on a better team. Then he will start to look like the fat Antoine Walker.

I always joke with my friends, that everyone on draft day saw Bennett as a fat undersized player, but when Cleavlend looked at him they saw the second coming of Charles Barkley :lol

He's not as bad as his stats show, but I don't think he'll ever become much more than a decent roleplayer. Certainly not as good as your traditional number one pick.

Mclemore - SG version of Thomas Robinson
Care to explain? I do not watch the Kings at all so haven't seen Mclemore much at all this year and really have maybe seen Thomas Robinson play his whole career.

He will be good, just needs minutes.
Preferably get him out of Cleveland.
Kyrie and Dion aren't gonna be giving away too many shots.

Hopefully he's just having a crappy first season and will come around in the seasons following and become a mainstay in the league, rather than somebody like Adam Morrison who's NBA-talent and career had no longevity on top of his early struggles as a rookie and sophomore.

He's getting the minutes needed for him to develop.. He'll be a solid NBA player for sure!

This. His ceiling is a young Rodney Rogers at best.

you can tell when he's on the floor how much he's hurting... lost at both ends, late reactions to just about everything happening, totally disengaged and distracted. he isn't playing with any instinct. which is kind of a good sign for the distant future. it means he has no comfort zone. most likely a variety of factors, being out of shape, heaping expectations, new country, a tweener having to carve out his own role.
i think he'll come into his own. he'll be a weak 1st pick no doubt but he's not going to completely bust like kwame or morrison or w/e else. that jumper will come back once he's out of the limelight and everybody has already written him off. he'll at least become productive off the bench in a year or two.
but right now... jeez. it's tough to watch. brandon bass was just feasting on him around the hoop a few nights ago.

When I saw Demarre Carroll look like LeBron when Bennett was guarding him, I knew he would never be a good player. He's obviously fat, but even beyond that I think he just can't move his feet. Even if his offense improves to become average he'll never be a good defender. Too small to guard most 4's and too slow to guard any 3's.

The only saving grace for Cavaliers (and I mean the only thing) is that none of the other Top picks in the draft are exactly tearing up the league right now....not as if Lebron was picked right after him. Bennett is bad, but the others are all just "ok" so far....
PizzamanIRL
12-30-2013, 01:06 PM
He probably wasn't expecting to be drafted number 1 and have to live up to the expectations. Not everyone has the mental toughness for that. Give him time. It's only been 30 games and he's not getting much time in games to improve.

Looking at his numbers, I wouldn't say he's playing "great". For a #2 pick, I'd say he's playing "ok". And were the Cavs going to take Oladipo if not Bennett? What about Porter? Or Noel? Or Zeller?

oladipo is also inconsistent as hell and has many flaws in his game, noel will miss the season and we dont know if he will have an injury free career like griffin or an injury prone like oden... MCW inconsistent too but still a step ahead of everyone right now.. burke is probably after him.. zeller is meh.. porter and len are utter shit..

I watched a Cavs game. They put in Bennett..the opposing team attacked him over and over and over. The guy looked so lost on defense. The guy that he was covering was scoring off him over and over and over. Obviously the weakest link..he quickly was sent back to the bench.

bennett is prolly in the worst place to be in.
-On a young losing team that was expected to make the jump from losing to the playoffs.
-A lot of the players he is playing with are volume shooters
-no playing time to develop
It's almost all on him but his surrounding is not helping either.

I don't know about that. There's too much pressure on him for not playing on a certain level. If he can withstand that pressure, then he has a shot. It's all in the head...

but i think the coach is to blame.......ola gets 5 mins here then sits on the bench for 10 mins, gets cold, then back in for 5 mins more..........i would let him play for much longer at a time

THe same thing happened to Dirk back in the 90s.
True. He admits that they were constantly saying that on the court.
But offensively? Dirk by the end of his rookie year was starting to figure things out. (And that was also a strike shortened season where he had never played against the type of competition like that before.)
If Bennet is going to stay in the league he better show something pretty quick. As in by the end of this year or next. Or he will be gone.

I agree on all counts.
When you're a kid (just out of his teenage years) from Canada who played a year of college ball, and suddenly there's a news article every time you miss a shot, it's bound to play games with your confidence/nerves. During his awful start where he missed his first 15 shots of the season and was 1 for his first 21. Literally every missed shot was becoming a news item.
Brown smartly allowed him to get a few easy looks late in games just to end that miserable narrative in the media and then let him take some time on the bench.
Still, even now, any time he has to put the ball on the floor and make decisions, he looks scared sh!tless. Meanwhile, he's looking much better in situations where he doesn't have to think, like catch-and-shoots and putbacks around the rim.
I think he'll be fine. He will probably never live up to the title that comes with "No. 1 pick," but many top picks don't. When you look at the other guys who were in conversation for the No. 1 pick, it doesn't get much better. I wanted Noel badly, but outside of him, the other guys mentioned were Len (hasn't done anything) and McLemore (hasn't lived up to his billing so far).
Even the guys who are kind of producing from this draft aren't exactly tearing it up. MCW is really the only guy who has stepped in and made a serious difference.
I'll say it if this guy ends up being the worst pick of all-time, but we aren't there yet. Not even close, really. Still way too early.
