How does jury duty work? (California)

I was instructed to call a day before my reporting date, I call, a certain group has to be there at 8:30 am and the group I am in has to call the same number tomorrow afternoon. What is that about?

i'm not sure about that, but with me i had to go to the courthouse and sit with a about three dozen other people in a big room for about three or four hours in case a jury was needed.
