Spoiler free OP- Can't speak for others in the thread..

I won't be reading this thread again because I'm not done watching the show. First let me say that I rarely get into TV shows. Didn't like Soprano's, the Wire, etc. I hate having to wait a week for episodes. I hate waiting between seasons. I think it's too much of a time investment to watch an entire TV show.

With that being said, if you haven't watched Breaking Bad yet, you really really should. This show is sick. It's on Netflix right now, everything but the last 8 episodes, which are showing on AMC so I've recorded them.

The basic plot if you don't know, a chemist/science teacher is diagnosed with cancer, and then begins brewing a super pure, super potent version of Meth. He gets into the drug business to save money for his family.

The description is intriguing, but the show just builds on it. The characters are great. It sets up maddening scenarios. The drama and tension is amazing.

I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said. I'm way late to the party obviously. But for those who haven't seen it, check it out.

PEACE

In the finale, Walt. Jr is the last one standing with a gun in his left hand, and a crutch in the right.

Season 4 is easily the best of Breaking Bad. I don't even like to watch season 5 because it's just too dark. It just gets so depressing. I consider season 3 and 4 to be masterpieces. What this show did with Jesse Pinkman is just special. The character development is brilliant. I don't even know how they did it.

In my mind the show really ends with the last frame of season 4.

But isn't this pretty much ignoring the whole point of the series? Walt winning without any real consequences whatsoever?

i personally thought the show ended perfectly, jesse getting to live the rest of his life, all the bikers dead and walt dying in a lab what he really loved and walt jr getting free breakfast for life.

If season 4 was the end, there would be loose ends that don't exist in it's current ending.

The whole point of the show was to display a story of a seemingly normal man in a normal family turning into a monster. Having him end with "I won" and right after realizing that he poisoned a little kid? **** no dude. That would be a shitty ending to a terrific show. Season 5 was amazing too. The first half was just kickass, and then the last few episodes tied up every possible loose end and finished it nicely.

You don't like season 5 because its so dark and depressing? So? Have you ever watched any other crime dramas? They pretty much all end on a depressing note. These shows aren't made by Disney. What do you expect? Walt and Jesse to just fly away on a magic carpet?

If they just ended with season 4, that would've been terrible. Season 4 was the best season in my opinion and in fact its my favorite season of TV of any show EVER, but if they ended the whole series that way that would've been such a disappointment and it would've just looked like the writers ran out of ideas.

Don't know if it's the GOAT TV show, but Ozymandis (S5 E14) is the GOAT episode.

Even if all the other episodes are crap, it's worth watching the 50 or so episodes before just for that episode. That shit is simultaneously the most gut wrenching but brilliant piece of television I've ever seen.

I also though the writers did a lot more bs in season 5. Mistakes have been made by characters like Gus, Walt, and Mike that never would happen. You can't establish these guys as all knowing paladin characters and then have them make simple mistakes. The writers ran out of ideas. I think it's pretty clear in season 5 the ending was contrived. The rest of the series didn't feel that way.

Gus died in season 4...so why do you refer to him regarding the writers kind of screwing up in season 5? And was Walt really coming across as an all knowing palading character throughout seasons 1-4 to you? To me, it seemed like he was constantly trying to get himself out a mess while simultaneously enjoying his lifestyle.

Haven't seen the show since it ended but I noticed I still had the episode Ozymandias on my DVR so I watched it again couple days ago...

Such a great episode, still has more or less the same punch as the first time watching. Pretty riveting television.

Really nice touch with the flashback beginning of when the White family was still kosher and the attention to the block of knives

Just finished last night. I think season 4 was the best but season 5 was still incredible.

Maybe Walt got too nice of an ending. But, I'd rather him get the nice ending than the Nazis.

I don't see how Jesse could have really forgiven Walt at that point, with the whole head nod thing. I know you'd be excited to no longer be a slave., but Walt really screwed Jesse over to a sickening degree. I guess Jesse did the same though. Maybe the head nod was just recognizing all the history between them, knowing that Walt was about to die.

It's deeper than you think. Jeese doesn't spare Walt only because of Walt's imminent death, but because he has accepted his goodness like Walt accepted his badness. The story has become just as much of Jesse's transformation as it is Walt's

That's a really good point. Although, Jesse did strangle that dude Todd, which would go against his goodness. But I guess you'd say that was self defense?

I thought Jessie didn't kill Walt because he earlier said that he was done doing what Walt told him to do. So when Walt told Jesse to kill him, he said "fvck off and do it yourself"

That was kind of a symbolic killing. Todd is the immorality and heartlessness that Jesse is overcoming to become good. It was fashioned in a similar manner to how Walt killed that guy in the first season. Basically, Jesse is breaking good while Walt is breaking bad as the series goes.

It was put that way so that Walt can become the villain he is supposed to be. It is also a parallel of Jesse being free, not just from Walt's manipulation, but also from the drug business.

No but part of being good means not murdering people, even if you have a justifiable reason. I do agree that it works as symbolism like ballup said.

breaking bad was incredibly good. i wish i could erase my memory so i could re watch it. just started watching the sopranos last night, hopefully its close to being as good as bb. exactly how good is the sopranos? so far its been very enjoyable, does it fall off? does it get better? i am only 3 episodes in so i hope it just keeps on getting better from here on.
sopranos has a lot of moments where it drags on, it lowers the likeliness you will rewatch the episodes. great show though. have you watched the wire?

I just watched Season 5 again. It does get real dark. I think season 5 is where the writers really make the point that selling drugs is not a glamorous thing. There is no romantic notion about selling drugs. No, this is where it leads. You will be a slave getting your face cut up every night. You will be alone and your son will hate you. You will ruin your entire family. Your brother in law will be dead. Your girlfriend will be murdered. This is where it leads to. And the only way to have a happy ending is if you truly do not give a shit about any of that, like Walt. Everyone who cared about other people was left dead or ruined.

Jesse Pinkman, slowly realizing he was a good person on the inside. Amazing.

Watched this show all the way through twice with two different girlfriends over the years. Could almost watch it a third, it’s ****en great. One of my personal favourite scenes is when Walt finally uses the ricin to poison the distribution woman and casually giving her a phone call. The whole ricin in the background of the entire show, just waiting to be used somewhere, is just one of many master strokes from the writers.

Once you’ve seen it once you also can’t go past the box cutter casually sitting on a box at the start of that episode.

Walt also running over and gunning down those two dudes that Jesse was on the way to kill is also pretty badass, and almost the start of Walt really becoming a bad mf. Great show.
