I loved uncle phil, as most people in my generation did.
And obviously its sad that he died, and I dont know the details, and maybe his weight had nothing to do with his death.

With that said in general, being overweight and 65 is not a good combo.

Will was obviously the star of the show, but James Avery was my favorite actor amongst that cast. Year later, I still watch this show on a weekly basis, as the humor and everything has managed to remain relevant over the course of time.

The Fresh Prince aired from 1990-96, which means he was 42-48 years old during the life of the show. He always did seem a bit older, though.

Funny enough, the original wife, in real life, was only a little bit older than her two oldest kids on the show (8 years older than Karyn Parsons, 13 years older than Alfonso Ribiero). She seemed older, too, for some reason. Maybe it was the way they dressed and presented themselves.

Seems like all the newer articles are saying he was 68,not 65. I noticed that wikipedia had his DOB as 1948 earlier but now at 1945.

Also, it was due to complications from open heart surgery.

Saw an article a couple years ago that says he was suffering from diabetes with eye & foot disease(circulation issues).

A photo of him with a cane shows that he may have been blind or partially blind & probably in danger of amputation.


He was trying to spread the word about diabetes & the dangers (blindness, amputations due to circulation & kidney failure)of not taking care of this illness like he admits he hadn't with his.


I knew someone younger(family friend) who went blind, had leg amputated below knee(threatening to amputate oppposite leg) & was on kidney dialysis 3 days per week. He was miserable(near suicidal) & we were relieved for him when he passed away.
