(AllHipHop News) In the coming years, 2013 may be seen as the turn around year for New York Hip Hop. Several rising East Coast artists and crews started getting serious attention from the media and rap fans over the last twelve months. One of those NYC collectives that made big waves in

I agree with you. Guy is an idiot. NY and Cali have two of the most identifiable styles ever in rap

New York has pumped out many different flavors of hip hop, can't be pinned down with one style.

Explain what the New York sound was between 1990 and 1999. Explain this "sound". Did it change in the new decade or was the sound intact? Do you consider any NY artist to have the same sound? Explain yourself if you're going to disagree, at least. Stop being so vague and ambiguous.

Do you want the Hit Squad (EPMD, Redman, Keith Murray) sound?

Do you want the Jazz rappers (Guru, Gangstarr, Digable Planets, Buckshot LeFonque) sound?

Do you want the Native Tongues (Tribe, De La, JBs) sound?

Do you want the Bad Boy (Puffy, Biggie, Mase) sound?

Do you want the sci fi (Kool Keith aka Dr Octagon aka Black Elvis) sound?

Do you want the Roc-a-fella (Jay Z etc.) sound?

Do you want something like Main Source or Nas?

Do you want something grimy like DMX or Das Efx?

Nah man, just New York Hip Hop.

The only reason the East Coast/West Coast thing became a thing was because hip hop wasn't universal then and it was almost all New York. Once the West Coast got their shit together they had a sound, but that doesn't mean New York had a counter-sound, only a rube would make such a simple prognostication. The early West Coast shit was basic and in many cases wack as f*ck, but once they laid down those classic Cali beats they had a sound and were making great music. Same thing happened a bit later in the South, the culture spread further, then North, then globally.

New York is a cacophony of sounds and styles, cannot be cubby holed, despite the media's best attempts.

Yeah, he made more money. So Jay>Nas. Clearly its how it works. :oldlol:

Jay-Z is as whack as they come these days, and this is from someone who constantly bumps anything of his from RD to Black Album to Blueprint. Hes unbearable to listen to at this point.

At least Nas is tolerable on features, and still more than decent.

Nas is GOAT. Jay may be richer but Nas is the better rapper, and won the beef. Money is irrelevant in that discussion. And if anyone took my comment as meaning all NY rap sounds the same you're an idiot. You know exactly what I meant and I'm not wrong

Most people in NY consider A$AP Mob to be a fcking joke anyway.

Nope. Explain it. Seems like dude completely destroyed the idea of a NY sound. What is a NY sound if not "anyone from NY"?
Soul/jazz samples, dusty drums, scratching while west is more synth-based with funky basslines, different delivery.

These are just stereotypes, though. Of course, not every west/east coast song is going to fall under those descriptions, especially today with social media being so popular. But when someone says a track has an NY sound, I get an idea of what to expect. I don't say shit like that tho
