View Full Version : Can someone explain what is so good about Iman Sumpert?

We had Knicks fans who didn't want to trade him straight up for Faried. I watch the guy play and I don't see anything remotely special about him. His defense has not been good (gambles too much) and on offense he's just dreadful. One of those players who thinks he's a lot better than he actually is. Am I missing something?

He's one of those guys that's all heart and play great D on perimeter players.

But I would trade him for Faried in a heartbeat.

I don't see this "great D" from him this year.

Can someone explain what is so appealing about you always talking about the Knicks when the Raptors are running away with the division? Is your 1st purpose to troll the Knicks and 2nd purpose to troll their fans? Have you even watched a Raptors game? This guy is so transparent. Constantly concerns himself about the Knicks. We get it, you don't like the Knicks. They are entertaining to sink like Titanic, we get it.

Out of 5k posts, I am sure 3K are in Knicks threads. Raptors fan who doesn't even talking about the Raptors. Closet Heat fan?

If you're a Heat fan I get it. But Raptors don't even have history with the Knicks, hell Knicks were the only team the Raptors beat in the playoffs. But I'm sure you aren't really a Raptors fan. That's just a cover up because you are Canadian.

I am a Raptors fan. If you would like to further discuss which team I'm a fan of feel free to PM me. Please do not attempt to derail my thread. Thanks.

Anyways, I would really like to get your (as well as other Knicks' fans) opinion on this topic.

He's been mismanaged. Sure we overrated him, but that has a lot to do with how he reminded us of how the 90s Knicks played. Hard nosed, didn't care about stats but would play defense regardless of the score.

Anthony Mason, I don't know if you remember him said so himself. He said Shump is the only guy on the current Knicks who could have played in the 90s Knicks. Now you're going to tell me how overrated the 90s Knicks were aren't you? And how they always shrunk against MJ's Bulls?

He is a lot like Jimmy Butler on the Bulls, but there is so much better coaching on the Bulls than on the Knicks. Knicks have at least 2-3 terrible defenders in their starting lineup, unlike the Bulls who probably only have Boozer on their whole team who doesn't defend.

If you put Bruce Bowen on the Suns, do you think he would have been able to be a defensive specialist (or as effective as he became on the Spurs)? Absolutely not, you need great defenders around you to accentuate the defense you actually do play. Chandler and Shump are the only ones who defend, who will consistently defend. Shump did a great job on Paul George in the playoffs last year, but you wouldn't have noticed that, because you were busy making threads making fun of the rest of the Knicks.

Assuming you're talking about the D'antoni era Suns I would say yes. Marion was a very effective defensive player on that team.

Also I don't get the Butler comparison at all. Butler is much better defender. Has a proven track record of slowing down Lebron. You're probably gonna say that's because of Thibbs but even Luol Deng doesn't slow down Lebron like Jimmy does.

Marion was effective sure, but he never defended Lebron on the Suns like he did in 2011 Finals. Guess who Marion had surrounding him in the separate places. How well can someone cover Lebron if he has Amare as a help defender him versus when he has Chandler and pesky defender like Kidd helping out?

What track record do you want Shump to have when he gets hurt in the playoffs against the Heat? Butler is a helluva defender, I didn't say he wasn't. He played Lebron as well as you can, a lot better than Deng, but Noah helped plenty behind him. Team defense >>>> individual defenders. Are you gonna tell me that Tayshawn Prince shut down Kobe in 04 Finals? Meanwhile Kobe consistently lit up Bowen on the Spurs. Who was the better defender?

Shump's offense has left a sour taste in my mouth. Woodson is terrible coaching it, plus Shump and Hardaway Jr are his whipping boys meanwhile Melo and JR get free reign.

Shump was an up-and-coming good-hearted young athletic player who somehow played well next to Jeremy Lin despite having a weak jumper and awful hair cut. Then Amare came back, Melo came back, Lin was booted, and he blew out his knee and lost his athleticism. His career is over really. That's why the Knicks are so eager to trade him.

He showed some promise. He played great defense in his rookie season. He played very well in the last year's playoffs too. But he already injured his knee like 3 times and now he seems like he doesn't want to play in New York anymore. It looks like trade rumors got to him,he even said that he was angry at the world :lol

Over the past month he's been playing awful. In December he averaged 5.1 points on 31% shooting (28% for three).

The Suns didn't have great overall team defense but they had two of the best individual defenders in Shawn Marion and Raja Bell. So it's not an excuse to suck on defense because no one else plays. Shumpert is vastly overrated on here. He's shown his spurts before, but he's gone downhill since the knee injury.

One fluke good game doesn't change what he is. Dud gets hype as some great prospect when he isn't. Terrence Ross has shown a long more than Shumpert but youll never see a raptor fan hyping him as the next Dwyane Wade or being worth more than Dragic in a trade.

Ross is developing nicely right now. He's the new X-Factor on the team.

Shumpert's never really been the same since that knee injury. That's why he's been bad for the majority of the year. And no, he's not really worth a lot of the names brought up. I see him testing the free agency market.

It took Shumpert 12 games to score in double digits since his last game that he scored double digits.

What went differently this time and will Shumpert find more consistency along the way ?

His defense is always consistent, which is why I personally love him. He never half asses it on that end. But so far this season he hasn't taken that step after he was the Knicks 2nd best player in the playoffs last year. If I had any answers, I'd share it with the world. I don't get it either. As of now he is just a role player, because role players are inconsistent. The stars are the ones you can count on to always show up, role players you can't. I hope he one day develops into more, perhaps a consistent 3rd option on a championship contender.

I'm hoping it's not for another team. But I am just as clueless as the rest of the world. Tonight he was the Knicks best player. Melo who?
