saw Precious yesterday...
http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ktnyy9Bqm61qz6d2eo1_500.jpg
so this movie basically starts out depressing as fck...then ends depressing as fck
it's just sad and then gets more sad, and then it gets even more sad...it just reminds you that for some people life really sucks and to be honest I have no desire to be reminded of that. I would rather just never see movies like this, and I'm glad there aren't that many of them. But here are a couple of others that gave me the same feeling...
http://images.picturesdepot.com/photo/u/unfaithful_poster-25428.jpg
^^^ good lord this movie is a downer...SPOILER: Wife with child and "happy family" cheats on her husband, the husband finds out and then murders the man she is sleeping with. The end...SMH
Thank you for that Unfaithful...I really needed to a movie about a family ruined by a whore wife
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/Million_Dollar_Baby_poster.jpg
^^^ this really needs no explanation...
FCK YOU Clint Eastwood...smh
I believe all of these movies had multiple Oscar nominations...they are all deemed great movies, but I'm just not interested
Any else like me with movies like this? What else out there is just nothing but depressing as hell?
Million Dollar Baby has some inspirational parts even though most of it is depressing.
The Road is doom and gloom throughout.

lol good one.
I watched it a long time ago. I don't remember WHY I was watching it but I remember crying a little. Pretty depressing movie.
Edit: I don't like watching Forrest Gump. I find it depressing as f*ck and the ending always makes me cry.

This is a great one. Not one thing about the imagery or themes in that movie had one shred of hope in them, besides maybe the bomb shelter when they find canned stew and non perishable goods
My wife likes japanese movies and we have a bunch of them. Some are drama's so they are 12 episodes.
Sekai no Chushin De:
The drama alternates between current day with Sakutaro (Saku) a grown man, still trying to come to grips with the death of his high school love Aki from leukemia 17 years prior. He is currently involved with a woman who has a little boy and is planning to marry her, but he finds some tapes she had made him in a box, and returns to the home town to try to reconcile some things for himself. The bulk of the drama is him and Aki in the past (1980's Japan in a small town), falling in love, dealing with the heartbreak and joys of life day to day, and finally dealing with her illness and eventually, her passing.
It killed me.
There are a ton like this (mostly movies), Taiyou no Uta about a girl who the sun poisons who is slowly dying, another about a girl who has a muscle disease which is slowly killing her. Ai no Uta is a drama about a family whose mother dies from a disease, and the father finds out he is also dying of same disease and will die soon. He meets a strange girl and just when she becomes happy with him she finds out he's dying. Japanese are really fatalistic, they see a beauty in facing it with grace. But as far as entertainment it makes me sad.
Anyone ever see NOBODY KNOWS? It's about a mom who abandons her kids to live for themselves. It's all bad, all depressing, no resolution.
As for american
September in NY: Richard Gere falls in love with Wyona Ryder who is dying of an incurable disease. It's depressing as **** and also an awful movie.
How about Seven? Bleak and depressing as **** albeit a great film.

The Wrestler and Requiem were depressing. Black Swan was dark but not a cryfest. City of god nobody mentioned yet. I think the direction film makers are trying to make is different than how the viewer sees it. Look at how many rappers want to be like Scarface. But they seem to ignore that his 'attitude' that brought him success, killed him in the end.

I honestly never even finished it because it depressed the shit out of me. The feeling of isolation at the start of the movie crushed me for some reason.

Some good ones already mentioned. I loved The Road and Melancholia but they're not exactly feel good movies of the year
Two more that I'd add:
Blue Valentine
Amour
I honestly have no desire to ever see Amour again and that has nothing to do with its quality. It's a very good movie but so incredibly draining and tough to watch. Reality can suck and this movie gave me more than a huge dose of it.

Blood In, Blood Out
I think the part they tried to make 'feel good' was the ending when the two half-brothers are play fighting each other as the camera pans out, but even the conversation they have before the movie ends is depressing.
Prisoners
Probably my favorite movie of 2013, and I watched plenty. It's still extremely depressing as nothing happens throughout it to make you happy.
If anyone's interested in knowing about this movie, it's about two little girls getting kidnapped, and the father of one of the girls taking matters into his own hands to find the girls by torturing one of the kidnapping suspects. It's just beyond depressing to watch, especially when you realize he has been torturing the wrong guy.

Synecdoche, New York
I thought about putting this on my list but the overall tone I always got from the movie was how life-affirming it was. It definitely has those depressing moments but also the hopeful small ones. It can really be taken both ways.
"None of those people is an extra. They're all the leads of their own stories. They have to be given their due."
Just an amazing movie and one that I seem to go back to once a year.

Last house on the left, the new one. Movie consists of two teenage girls having their lives ruined (and one killed), by a group of fugitives on the run. The end is watching the surviving girls parents slaughter the fugitives. I guess the end was supposed to feel good, but when it comes down to it, nobody really wins in this movie.

It's more that the quality and superficiality of the storytelling in that movie is so depressing, rather than the actual story.
