View Full Version : It's about to get damn cold

KevinNYC

Coming on top of this major storm that hit the whole east coast, super frigid artic air is about to hit the midwest and then come east.

Basically a large whirlpool in the atmosphere originating at the north pole – in geek speak known as the polar vortex – is diving into the Lower 48.
http://media.salon.com/2014/01/1535558_10152485189030898_895174748_n1-e1388764862319.jpg
https://socialreader.com/me/content/sQ4lG?chid=78144&_p=article_related[8]

Some of the coldest air in years, if not decades, is poised to pour into the U.S., with mind-boggling low temperatures.

Let’s start in Montana on Sunday night, when wind chills may go as low as 62 below, according to the National Weather Service in Glasgow.

It’s not out of the question parts of northern Minnesota experience wind chills down to 70 below.

In Minneapolis, the National Weather Service is forecasting wind chills Monday morning from 45 to 60 below zero. It calls the incoming cold air outbreak “historic”, predicting it will be the most severe since 1996. “Highs of 10 to 20 below and lows of 15 to 30 below are expected,” it warns.

So extreme is the expected cold that Minnesota governor Mark Dayton has closed all public schools Monday, reports the NY Times.

The playoff matchup between the Packers and San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay’s Lambeau field Sunday evening may match or even surpass the coldest NFL game on record, the Ice Bowl (December 31, 1967) which was played at 13 below in Green Bay.

“Low temperatures may fall to 30 below over north-central portions of Wisconsin Monday and Tuesday morning,” writes the National Weather Service office in Green Bay. “If you plan on being outside, be sure to dress warm using layered clothing if possible, as frost bite can occur in as little as 10 minutes in these conditions.”

The punishing cold snap will also blast Chicago.

Stay safe. Be warm.

Actually right now another winter storm is over the midwest. So two big snowstorms followed by a blast of polar air. The polar air is going to have 20+ mph winds, very low wind chills.

Honestly this winter has been tolerable. I can't recall being blasted by many snow storms or for an extended cold snap. Heck i didn't have my heat running for most of the winter so i can't say it has been that bad.

On Monday I can't wait to see what my car is going to do. Some days it struggles to start when it's -5 to -10 below. It's going to be -20 below in our area with -50 windchilds. There's a place up north in Wisconsin here that is going to have -70 windchills. Holy shit!

I bundled up really well yesterday before braving the elements here in Michigan (-35 wind chill). It didn't feel too shabby at all (had my mouth covered with a scarf). I was feeling pretty good. Then, the minute I took one of my gloves off to take a photo, it quickly became apparent how cold it really was. About 15 seconds of exposure seemed to border on inducing frost bite. Amazing contrast.

I had to drive down to Effingham (close to Springfield IL) on Monday because my father-in-law's car broke down there. Holy ****! I-57 was a mess. I counted at least 70 vehicles (cars, pickups, buses, 18 wheelers) all over in the ditches and the roads were ridiculously icy. At one point we were driving on an inch thick sheet of ice for 25+ miles. Took me 8 hours to do a 4 hour drive. Some places were really not equipped to deal with this weather at all.

To top it off, you still had idiot truckers racing past us at 50 mph on those icy roads. Pretty sure I saw at least a couple of them in ditches a few miles later.
