Story going online now from @IanBegley & I: ESPN sources say Knicks, challenging as it sounds, have begun exploring J.R. Smith trade options

Yeah, good luck with that.

trade him to siberia, where he can't get in trouble and can have all the weed he wants.

but then again who would wanna trade for this guy? i know he doesn't make that much, but he's still someone that needs to be babysat. maybe OKC till westbrook gets back. 2nd round pick + last guy on their bench. get it done.

Seriously who would trade for this guy?:lol

What does his contract look like. BTW is Melo a possible trade option as well? Because I don't see anyone wanting JR, however if you want Melo than you need to take on the poison that is JR. With that being said I don't think the Knicks are going to be trading Melo.

Considering his talent, his contract is very favorable to the team.

Considering his personality, his contract is a complete waste.

Every underperforming player with a contract longer a year is being shopped. It's more juicy to report this now, but you're telling me prior to this the Knicks haven't considered trading JR? If a team said "we have 75% value and a year shorter" he'd not be gone?

niko
01-08-2014, 06:25 PM

No, 2 more years with 1 at his option. Not 4 years.

Due to the nature of his contract, Smith cannot be traded prior to January 15. The Knicks, furthermore, privately acknowledge that it will be difficult in the current climate to trade Smith, who has two seasons left after this one on a three-year, $18 million contract.

$6 mill/year isn't bad. Lakers might as well trade Nash for him, they'll get more out of JR the rest of this year than the rest of Nash's career. nm the other 2 years left. $6mill/year is a bargain for his talent even if he's a idiot streaky chucker.

That popped into my mind. That and Jason Thompson, or any number of Pistons. That team has no shooting and hates each other.

Why would they want him when they have a player that plays the same way (Nick Young), except Young isn't half the headache that JR Smith is.

niko
01-08-2014, 06:54 PM
Knicks can't take Nash anyway, Knicks need someone alive in some way, a body. Not looking for a star but we need a rotation worthy person (even if it's 9th/10th). We get too many injuries all over to have dead weight for two years.

JR Smith for Melo

Why the Knicks do it: Smith doesn't bring anything good for the team. Any players can replace him

Why the Knicks do it: Melo wants to go somewhere else in the offseason, so at least they get somebody who can score

Interesting fact: JR has already been paid out half of his overall contract figure. Leaving only 4.5 million for each of the 2 remaining seasons, might make his contract a bit more appealing.

But won't it still take valuable cap space of 5mil/year still?

Joel Anthony 3.8 mil
James Jones 1.5 mil
Total 5.3 mil

Well, I could write a whole lot on this but don't have the patience, so 2 thoughts:

1. I don't believe they are really trying to trade JR. No chance. Woodson treats him like his son. JR is a client of CAA, that runs Knicks. This sounds like complete BS.

2. Anyone, including Woj, who thinks there is no market for JR is delusional. Despite his antics, JR is talented. Last year he was phenomenal. He took a PAYCUT to stay on Knicks (meaning probably could got more in open market). He's young. He's now healthy. His contract isn't that long. He's very tradeable.

That's it. Later.

JR's putting up 11 pts on 12 shots, and nothing else. Incomparable to 20/10.

Just my opinion but I think "east coast bias" had a role in JR taking that award from Jamal Crawford.

The fact that he was a much better rebounder and defender may have actually helped.

JR Smith was phenomenal last season. He stunk in playoffs though. But JR Smith was the 3rd best player on a team that got the 2nd seed in the East. He definitely deserved 6th man award.

We rather keep Thornton on a two year deal tbh as awful as he has been, is JR's deal not like 4-5 year one?
