View Full Version : Who here can grow a full beard? Do you ever sport one?

CavaliersFTW

I can, and this is the first time I've worn a legit one. I wasn't able to grow a full beard like this the last time I tried (I was 21 when I first gave it a shot, now I'm 26). The first time I tried it one of my old GF's had a thing for beards so I 'grew it out' but it was kinda patchy and I never really let it grow enough so it never amounted to anything beyond a weak looking 5 o'clock shadow. Now I've got a full blown old man beard going and have had it since November. My beard has brought me nothing but confidence, success and good fortune since sporting it. What are your guys experiences with beards, can you grow one, do you ever wear one, does/did having one appear to affect your success or confidence in any way whatsoever?

Where do you work that doesn't allow a beard? You a surgeon or something? I work in an office environment and I couldn't imagine anyone telling me I couldn't grow a beard for appearance reasons. A well groomed beard is like a nicely fitted suit, it can look good.

My beard doesn't grow in as thick on my cheeks as it does in the goatee/mustache area, so I usually either go goatee or if I go for full beard, I embrace that it is thicker around the goatee area and have that intentionally longer.

When you need a damn website to tell you about beards, you end your life right there. When 9er is giving you tips on how to deal with society, it's time to blow it all up and start over again. This life isn't real. We're living in the Matrix.

Yep, there are many people in this world like the OP who don't know jack about beards. That's why he made a thread like this and confused about maintenance, judging by the pics he posted of his beard, that's why there are sites like that for him. One quick google search he would have saved face and embarrassment.

I want to help him.

Yeah, the issue with a lot of people is that they only grow a beard out of laziness. I would never want to keep a beard well-groomed because it would take too much work that I wouldn't want to deal with.

Yeah I agree, I generally grow my beard out because I'm to lazy to shave. If i'm to lazy to shave theres no reason to think i'm going to be taking the time to groom/trim my beard. :oldlol:

To answer the OP's question, i'm 21 and yes I can grow a full beard and I usually do until I find the energy to shave. My confidence isn't affected by whether or not I have a beard.

I trim it about every 3 weeks and keeps the borders neatly shaved. Its really not very hard and much easier than shaving my entire face every day.

This ^

A beard is low maintenance. Shaving is high maintenance. A beard can look good with minimal intervention, you don't have to look homeless if you have a beard a little bit of trimming every once in a while keeps it looking fresh and doesn't 'defeat the purpose' (of not wanting to shave) or w/e. It's much much less work to keep a beard looking good than it is to keep a face clean-shaven.

Takes a lot more work to shave for several minutes once a day or once every other day than to trim a beard for a minute or two once or twice every week

My face actually hurt during the transition phase while trying to sleep, that was the most annoying part in my opinion. Short beard hair is sharp and tough like a hundred little needles stabbing ur face when u try to lay down. After about two weeks though that goes away, either ur skin gets used to it or the hairs sharp ends start to dull.

I think with a full beard you can get away with less maintenance. I do shave 2 spots on my neck but that's literally two swipes of the razor, no shaving cream or any of that mess. I do trim the stache with a pair of scissors so it doesn't cover my mouth. But since having the beard I've saved several minutes getting ready for work every morning or getting ready to go out on the weekends. Trimming is still less time than shaving, and it is done less often. I would think having only a partial beard would require shaving AND trimming which yeah, is more work. I pretty much just have a full beard though so shaving is virtually eliminated aside from a quick 10 second edging on the neck.

For some reason, a little stubble around an otherwise well trimmed beard does not look as bad as a little stubble everywhere. Overall as others have stated, much less maintenance is needed on a beard than keeping well shaved to look professional.

Do you look 12 like me with out the facial fuzz?

My misses prefers a short well groomed beard on me, otherwise I look 12, as opposed to 26, I was attempting to give Harden a run for his money.

Most women say they dont like beards buts I read an article that said statistically women find men whith full beards most atttractive. Women seem to either have no clue what they find attractive or lie about it. Either way dont listen to them.

Scientific Proof That Women Hate Beards (http://gizmodo.com/5893506/scientific-proof-that-women-hate-beards)

[QUOTE]Every man grows a beard at some point in his life. But that's not to say that it's a good idea. In fact, science now confirms that while a beard makes you look older and of higher status, it makes you less attractive to women.

The research, conducted by Barnaby Dixson and Paul Vasey from New Zealand and Canada respectively, tried to get to the bottom of human perception of bearded men. The researchers took photographs of 19 men with full beards and then asked the unthinkable

Myth

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I remember a study that showed full beards that were a CM long or longer led to women finding men not as attractive as clean shaven, but stubble beards were preferred over both and women thought it was a sign that they would be the best fit as a father to their children.

Either way, I don't really care. I'll wear what I want to wear for a beard. I don't waste my time with girls that require me to groom the way they want.

You can have a beard and still be "well groomed". I take great care of my beard. The length is trimmed daily, as is the neck line. I use tweezers to pluck the cheek line, which makes it looks natural but clean. I also use special moisturizers to make sure it's always soft and glowing. I definitely look older with the beard though.

This article says "heavy stubble" is preferred over a full beard or clean shaven, and it calls "heavy stubble" 10 days of growth: http://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/1635/20130429/women-find-men-10-day-beard-attractive-masculine-study.htm

To me, 10 days of growth is a beard. I'm wondering if "full beard" according to the studies above is more mountain man style beard (1 of your studies shows a picture of a guy with a huge beard and the other a shorter one, so I'm not sure what is really being studied. They also don't specify if all the beards are well groomed).

I'm 22 and grow the worst facial hair. I've tried letting it grow for a week or two and just get some hair on my chin and a dirty little mustache :lol barely anything on my cheeks.

Maybe when I'm 40.

I don't waste my time with girls that require me to groom the way they want.
pretty sure the study that PT is citing said stubble first, beards second, and cleanshaven was last. But I dont feel like delving into it.

Other studies find that women (and men) find those with full beards more masculine (not related to attractiveness) and commanding.

Here’s why you should make your next boyfriend a bearded one.

I have a bit of a confession to make: bearded guys make me weak in the knees. There’s just something about a little facial hair that gets me every time: a beard that’s not too bushy (as in, Gandalf status) and not too patchy (like, Michael Cera’s creepy barely-there scruff), but that heavy stubble that’s juuuuuust right. And I’m not alone.

Sorry, clean-shaven, conventionally handsome Bradley Cooper, but I’m too busy checking out your bearded buddy Zach Galifinakis. Even a decent five o’ clock shadow can transform a dork into a rugged, mountain-climbing, hunk. And if he’s already sexy? Forget about it. Totally irresistible. (There’s a reason why Allie went back to Noah in The Notebook— and we all know it was his beard.)

Ke$ha is already on the beard bandwagon (I’m not exactly saying to take dating cues from her, since she also sings about chugging Jack and rolling around in glitter, but I digress …) and I say, you should join her by nabbing yourself a bearded beau!

Research shows that growing a beard keeps a guy younger-looking and cancer-free. Here are just a few of the infinite reasons why being a lumberjack’s lady has its perks!

1. Beards Have A Storied History Of Badassery
First off, beards go way back as having prestige and power. From the dawn of time, a man’s beard was a symbol of his honor, sexual virility and social status as a man. In the Middle Ages, just touching another man’s beard was offensive and grounds for a duel. Otto the Great swore by his beard saying anything serious. Alexander the Great decreed that soldiers could not have beards. For the ancient Greeks, a beard indicated his maturity. You’ll notice that Zeus —the head honcho of the gods — rocked a full beard versus the baby-faced Apollo, Hermes or Dionysus.) For the early Egyptians, the beard became a symbol of kingship, placing the pharaoh among the deities. The Vikings really perfected the art of manscaping by plaiting, forking or trimming and nick-naming their face fuzz. So really, beards are rocked by Greek gods, rock stars, royalty … shall I go on?

2. He Has Clear Skin
You’re likely to suspect he has something to hide under that beard, but contrary to what you would think, under that bushiness is blemish-free, baby-smooth skin! Acne and folliculitis (hair-follicle inflammation) are oftentimes the result of shaving. This is because razors can irritate the skin and even spread bacteria. As for the secret to his smoothness? His beard prevents him from rubbing natural moisturizing oil off his face and protects him from those bitter winds. No redness or dryness on this furry face!

3. His Beard Keeps Him Wrinkle-Free
A beard is the fountain of youth. Funny to think of it that way, but according to recent research from the University of Southern Queensland, a man’s beard blocks up to 95 percent of the sun’s UV rays and we all know that over-exposure to the sun means a higher risk of melanoma. Actually, four out of five cases in men appear on the face, head or neck and the sun causes up to 90 percent of the visible signs of aging. So while we still suggest that he lather on that sunscreen, keeping up his beard will keep that chiseled jawline of his spot-free and baby-smooth.

4. … And Yet, He looks Much Older And Sophisticated!
A survey this past summer found that fuzzy-faced fellas look as much as eight years older than those who are clean shaven. When a panel of women were shown a picture of Prince William, who is 31, with a beard, they believed he looked 36. So he looks more mature, without looking haggard or weary — it’s like getting all the benefits!

5. He Looks Insta-Masculine

Sounds like a cliche, but there’s legitimate research behind this: a study published in Evolution and Human Behavior proved that the more facial hair a man has, the more masculine both men and women perceive him to be. So if you’re into the burly, testosterone-driven type, he should skip the razor for 10 days — that’s the exact length of time the study found that women find men the most attractive.

6. He’s Trendy
Maybe it’s because of bushy-faced hunks like Ben Affleck and George Clooney. Maybe it’s because of the growing popularity of No Shave November. Maybe it’s because that scruffy hipster look is so “in” right now. Either way, bearded guys are on the rise. More and more men are checking in with their doctors to grow thicker beards, taking multivitamins and even prescribed medication that stimulates the male hormone dihydrotestosterone. Amazon.co.uk found that sales of beard trimmers have grown by 47 percent this year, too. Think of all the men you can date!

7. He Scares Away The Bad Guys
There’s a reason why bearded men are born warriors. A study published last year in Behavioral Ecology found that bearded men appear more intimidating to other men. The researchers think a beard makes a man’s jawline look bigger, which can make him seem more aggressive when he’s angry. You know he’s a big softie on the inside, so you know there’s no reason to fear the beard. You can walk down the street holding his hand on a dark night in confidence.

I think on a conscious level some, maybe even many women will say they find beards less attractive. But believe me when I say, I've had more success hooking up in the past few months than I did in the previous 2 years and I really think the beard has a great deal to do with it. Women that never used to be into me are now into me, and a few have flat out told me it's because of the beard, and have told me not to shave it and that guys without beards don't look like "men".

Even if most women would not verbally agree with that I think on a primal level, women are just plain attracted to a man that looks like a man. I have kind of a baby face without facial hair so for me at least, the beard has been nothing but a good thing in terms of looking attractive to women. I had one girl verbally say she didn't like my beard but we f*cked anyways so her words obviously didn't mean shit. As a result of my recent good fortunes my confidence has been sky high with this beard. You can show me all the studies in the world about how women hate beards or w/e, but I'm not buying it. My first hand experiences outweigh the studies.

Much of the pics of the groomed "beards" in this thread have been more the length of long stubble.

^^^ there is some "stubble" to be found in there...but no beards
we have had this discussion before, but the media is not really an accurate reflection of what a society/culture finds attractive in the real world. Idealized movie hunks and porn stars arent what people actually go for when they are meeting a person and may be sexually interested in them. Just like the media portrays giant titties as the standard for attractive women, but actual studies show that isnt really true. Looking for an article about women's perception of what men view as an attractive body type across cultures which shows that american women are massively out of touch with what men really like (mostly due to media images). I would argue the same is true for beards. Give me a sec. In the meantime, enjoy these

http://evankozierachi.com/uploads/The_role_of_facial_hair.pdf

Facial hair strongly in
fl
uences people's judgments of men's socio-sexual attributes. However, the nature of
these judgments is often contradictory. The levels of intermediate facial hair growth presented to raters and the stage of female raters' menstrual cycles might have influenced past findings. We quantified men's and
women's judgments of attractiveness, health, masculinity and parenting abilities for photographs of men who were clean-shaven, lightly or heavily stubbled and fully bearded. We also tested the effect of the menstrual
cycle and hormonal contraceptive use on women's ratings. Women judged faces with heavy stubble as most
attractive and heavy beards, light stubble and clean-shaven faces as similarly less attractive. In contrast, men
rated full beards and heavy stubble as most attractive, followed closely by clean-shaven and light stubble as
least attractive. Men and women rated full beards highest for parenting ability and healthiness. Masculinity
ratings increased linearly as facial hair increased, and this effect was more pronounced in women in the fertile
phase of the menstrual cycle, although attractiveness ratings did not differ according to fertility. Our findings confirm that beardedness affects judgments of male socio-sexual attributes and suggest that an intermediate
level of beardedness is most attractive while full-bearded men may be perceived as better fathers who could
protect and invest in offspring
http://beheco.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2012/01/12/beheco.arr214.full

The beard is a strikingly sexually dimorphic androgen-dependent secondary sexual trait in humans. Darwin posited that beards evolved in human ancestors via female choice as a highly attractive masculine adornment. Others have since proposed that beards evolved as a signal of male status and dominance. Here, we show that women from two very different ethnic groups, Europeans from New Zealand and Polynesians from Samoa, do not rate bearded male faces as more attractive than clean-shaven faces. Women and men from both cultures judge bearded faces to be older and ascribe them higher social status than the same men when clean-shaven. Images of bearded men displaying an aggressive facial expression were also rated as significantly more aggressive than the same men when clean-shaven. Thus, the beard appears to augment the effectiveness of human aggressive facial displays. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the human beard evolved primarily via intrasexual selection between males and as part of complex facial communication signaling status and aggressiveness.

A fairer Daily Mail headline might have read something like "Psychologists confirm: Women are simply not very attracted to 19 specific dudes, but are slightly more attracted to them when they do not have weird beards all over their faces. Just trim them! And do not grow a soul patch. Ever."

It DOES represent what women are attracted to, just like Hollywood babes and porn stars reflect what us men like

AGAIN, romance novels are written BY WOMEN

why no beards in there?...if women are attracted to beards, then how come they are no where to be found in romance novels?

OR Playgirl magazines...on male strippers, soft core porn, etc etc etc

if women loved bearded men we would be seeing beards present in these things...

I can only speak for myself and my age group, but chicks I know definitely dig beards. I'm 23 years old and sport a decent one, although I do trim it pretty short on a daily basis though. Only thing that bugs me is the fact that like between my cheeks and goatee there's little gaps on both sides that haven't completely closed yet.

Literally about 30-40% of all dudes my age in my northeast Ohio area have a beard in the winter, black or white. It is true that they keep your face warmer. That's initially why I started growing mine. I found women liked it or appear to have found me more attractive after the fact as a bonus. most guys grow a beard because they're just lazy or slobs (like that Hangover retard guy). but having a beard is sort of a statement too. it's like having mustaches. it just tells everyone "hey, look at me, i'm a man and i look like this. and i don't give a fuuk" but maybe you do give a *** and intentionally want to look like the younger version of santa claus because that's your off-the-corporate, off-the-grid, anti-establishment, rebellion look or whatever...
