View Full Version : Kobe's place in dunk history?

Between his endless posters and unique style, where does he rank? I find him to be severely underrated as a dunker. A lot of more heralded dunkers who were more athletic, in my opinion, aren't even close to him when all things are considered.

Who can you say is definitely above him?

Kobe is a dunker along the lines of Pippen or Drexler with more variety than Pippen but less hops than Drexler. Hes nothing I need to see on a breakaway. Hes good in traffic. Hes a great dunker far as a poster.

Far better than the likes of Jrich who put him to shame in a contest.

Hes not up there with the Vinces, Kemps, Blakes and so on as an in game dunker that makes you jump up and call people to see if they saw it.

Hes a couple levels below that. Maybe just one. In game I mean. Attacking the basket.

Great dunker (top 15 all time) for a player without elite ups.

He always had good extension though and could jump well enough to make it look pretty. His strengths were always variety, body movement and especially flair and swagger. When he first came into the league, he was reckless and he didn't seem to respect anyone but MJ; that arrogance and confidence only added to the dunks.

I always thought this was Kobe's most underrated dunk.. Or at least the one that never gets talked about. Absolutely disgusting. (1:40 mark)

http://youtu.be/Hw-K7OxZIsw?t=1m40s

Actually the entire 04-05 season, he had some monster dunks. Nobody talks about them except the one he had on Dwight, probably because the Lakers sucked that year.

I have a hard time of knowing where to rank Kobe amongst the best dunkers of all-time. I've watched him dunk his whole career and he has a wonderful resume in terms of variety and execution, but he never struck me as revolutionary. I completely understand how fans of his would get very amped and hyped for any cool dunk he completed, but as someone with no real tie to Bryant, I struggle to recall dunk moments of his that made me jump out of my seat.

Thinking back, I honestly believe his between-the-legs in '97 may have been my best Bryant dunking moment. At the time I thought it was incredible to see because he was the first non-Woolridge person to pull that jam off since J.R. Rider three years earlier... and Kobe did it out of nowhere.

Otherwise, I just have a tough time explaining what it was about Kobe's dunking that made me say, "Whew, that was very impressive and great" instead of "Holy lord that was sick!" I wonder if he was too smooth or sterile, but he had some nasty jams too. I really just can't put my finger on as to why his dunks didn't make me feel more, like a Vince Carter, Jason Richardson, Desmond Mason, Blake Griffin, or Dominique Wilkins would.

Also, a lot of people like to say Kobe's dunk contest was weak as hell (which it was), but if you watch the dunk he attempted to do as his last, it was pretty creative for that time period.

Everyone remembers the between the legs dunk he did for the contest, and probably simply assumes that was the best dunk he had up his sleeve.

http://youtu.be/KxsWBP_TDOc?t=3m2s

Now, I'm not necessarily saying it was an impressive attempt (especially compared to today's standards), but a creative attempt for the 90s nontheless.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXo0x0ZiNoEYeah I like that dunk. But as a random outsider, it didn't blow me away. It was almost more about the move preceding the dunk than the jam itself (though the dunk was still very good).

That doesn't make you jump out of your seat????That was one that came to mind. And the baseline double pump reverse. And Dwight Howard's. I know for a fact they were great dunks but somehow I never ended up feeling as excited as I thought I should be.

Actually, in hindsight, I think I really did like that preseason jam and likely just grew numb to it over the years, kind of how that Jordan dunk on Ewing really does nothing for me anymore.

I was not intending to sound critical of Kobe's dunking style with my initial post. Rather, I was just trying to explore why I always seem to think of many other dunkers first when contemplating the real nasty throw-down artists of our day. Perhaps KBlaze was correct. All things considered, maybe Kobe is amongst the best, but still maybe a half step below the absolute greatest dunkers, for which there is no shame (if that is the case).

I have him as the best in-game dunker in history. All these highlight videos do him no justice when you guys expect him to dunk on people.

I have watched Kobe my entire career and what sets him apart from other dunkers is his ability to dunk on people when least expected.

There will be one play when he drives to the hoop nonchalantly and then out of nowhere he goes flying at people and smashing them. Like those baseline up and under dunks on KG and Sprewell, nobody expects those.

Greatest dunker in history.

That's the pop your collar dunk. People know what I mean if they watched the game.

"pop it Kobe...pop it."

Also, look how the ball bounces off the court after the dunk. Textbook backslam and the power of that throw down makes you want to throw up.

Kobe is one of the greatest in-game dunkers ever because he's so fearless and arrogant. It's not that his dunks in game are dunks no one else can do, it's just that he DARES to do them in game because he's confident he's not going to get stuffed and that he won't miss it.

That being said, his dunk competition dunks were pretty weak.

That being said, his dunk competition dunks were pretty weak. For its time, his dunk contest slams were pretty solid. I think it was a little bit tougher for players to go out on a limb with their jams during that four year period where players were expected to perform "routines" in the first round (1994-1997). It seemed to become more about making a lot of pretty good dunks instead of focusing on throwing down a couple of great ones.

Once reaching the finals, I think that form of between-the-legs finishing was still fresh enough to be regarded as exceptional. He had nice style, swagger, etc. We knew we'd seen almost the exact same play a few years earlier, but it still meant something to be the first non-Rider player (not including Woolridge's awkward pioneering finish) to put it down.
