Smith's always loved to play the part of a tough city kid, but truth be told, he's a soft, spoiled suburban jump shooter.

this is most scathing article I seen from Woj yet, but completely justified imo.
who would have thought Knicks show better ball movement and shot selection and commitment with this chucker on the bench
even isola roasted this fool:

so you know Dolan's taken JR off his protected list. :applause:

Spoken like someone who doesn't follow the Knicks, Isola is one of the harshest beat writers in the country. Dude calls it as he sees it.
The thing I don't like here is this thought that JR is somehow the NBA's lone knucklehead. There are players that aren't in jail only by the grace of god but JR is untying shoes and he's the ultimate evil. Seems a small stretch to me.

not isolated incident, pattern of knucklehead behavior, some of which much more malicious than faking untying shoelace

But when you really compare JR to the other knuckleheads in the league, he's the only one on a long term contract and the only one that is playing so far below what he could be if he could just get it together. The untying of an opponents shoes were just the straw that broke the camels back, not the main point of the whole situation.
I stick by what I said. There's been a history of stupid shit in the league, we are acting all of a sudden like this is completely isolated, one time incident that the league never sees. JR's biggest crime is he sucks right now, when you are playing better your transgressions are much less. Wojo's article really paints this like it's isolated.

[QUOTE]Within days of J.R. Smith arriving armed with a historic $3 million contract, Zhejiang of the Chinese Basketball League had come to regret signing the clown prince of basketball. From unreasonable demands on the kind of car needed to curry him around the city, to skipping practices for shopping excursions in neighboring cities, to a relentless pattern of insubordination, Smith's bad act had never been worse.
Perhaps his greatest excess of idiocy had been a weekend of running a room service bill into the proximity of $3,000, a source with direct knowledge told Yahoo Sports. He kept ordering food, stacking piles of trays upon trays

JR Smith is soft and a crybaby. Tough is the last word that someone should use to describe him. He did spend a couple years playing ball as a transfer at Lakewood High School but he was soft there too(picked on and beat up despite his size). Before that he lived in affluent Milstone NJ. Guy is as well off as you can get and was a punk in high schoool. Thank god someone is bringing this to life because watching him act stupid all over TV is a joke. Funny how everyone just falls for it to.
the rest of the article is OD. Leave is daughter and dead friend out it. These aren't subjects that imo are up for discussion.

Shawne Williams threw a girl down a staircase. Z-Bo (who i like) was being investigated last year (for the second time) for funding a drug operation. Blatche didn't get charges for sexual assault because (per the cops) the victim wasn't coherent enough to express what happened. Want to go player by player old Blazer or Pacer teams? Stephen Jackson? Want to go even older? Knick fans used to love Mason. Great guy.
JR's a dick, if it makes you all feel better to say the Knicks have the only dick in the league then go ahead. Don't explain to me that JR is an asshole, I am aware. I had no issue with him not playing, I thought that was great. It feels though that everyone just woke up and is shocked that the NBA could contain a person like this. OMG, an NBA player that's a bad guy? How could that happen?

A few months ago I said Smith was the new Ricky Davis. Actually, that was wrong. Davis got into less trouble with his teams as he got older while Smith seems to be getting worse. Also, I forgot about the reckless driving killing on Smith's resume. Smith isn't evil but it seems like he doesn't see how some of the dumb things he does can hurt. The reckless driving killing is the ultimate example of that. A reckless driver doesn't have any intent to commit murder. They just want to drive fast, don't see anyone coming as they approach the stop sign, figure no one is behind them while they're backing up, etc. Smith is just dumb, so dumb that it makes him dangerous. Oh well.

A few things:
1. JR Smith would be or will be gone as soon as his skills aren't enough to compensate for his short comings.
2. People act like the NBA isn't a job. Asshole or not he worked hard enough to be an NBA player and that's pretty much it. Athletes across the board do stupid shit like this.
3. I love the part of the article that expressed his upbringing. Non-black suburban kids are always fooled by images when it comes to black people....quick to call a guy like JR Smith a goon or a thug when in reality they are only spoiled kids who haven't grown up yet--they just have tatts, smoke weed, and behave badly.....still doesn't make them g's and most of them are sofT.

It has never been a misconception here, on a board full of white people [more so in the ghetto]. In actuality there is a running joke here about "street hunger."
All-in-all I think people who struggled growing up are mentally tougher and less whiny but in the realm of athletics and most things in life your genetic makeup and mental toughness has nothing to do with your location.
I remember when I first got to college and I had a friend from Chicago that acted really tough until a crazy/dumb/insanely fit white guy from the [a Big 12] wrestling team put his fallacies into perspective.

Why do the Knicks always sign idiots to massive contracts, turn on them, and then kick them out? The owner surely should have learned by now what happens. Just last year this guy was a god to Knicks fans, now he has become their biggest enemy.
ALSO why cant they get a good coach in New York?
Stan Van Gundy? Jeff Van Gundy? Doug Collins? Paul Westphal? Lionel Hollins? Larry Brown? Jerry Sloane?
Why do they let that idiot Woodson run the team? Don't they want a chance at winning in the playoffs?

The biggest problem this year with trading him is that so many teams are tanking and won't want to take on his contract.
Otherwise, the Celtics could trade Wallace for Smith, then waive Smith immediately which would still save the Celtics 4 million in cap space the next 2 seasons.

It's important to read Woj's pieces as editorials/commentary, not as the NBA writeups you usually see. While I used to think it was kind of annoying, it's also interesting to see an opinoin based on the players personality, like Woj wrote an article on Kobe's determination a few months ago, now he's got a piece on JR's immaturity. It's very different from Grantland's stuff (which I love as well).

He started the season playing every other game to protect his knee. He typically doesn't play back to backs, but he is getting consecutive games in now.
He's still a very good player, and a very high character guy.
The Hawks may not be the greatest team in the league, but I'm not ashamed of the guys of my team, unlike a lot of other teams.

I'm not defending him, I'm criticizing Wojo for selectively deciding that JR is his pet project to bash. This sounds like JR should be cut from the league or something, i don't recall him having this venom for other players who have messed up over time.
is there a player with a history of messing up and is actively acting a fool on as big a stage as JR is right now?
His targeting of JR is not arbitrary or discriminatory, it's entirely justified.
Woj conducted that private interview with JR 3 years ago, if he had such personal vendetta against JR wouldn't he have used that material already in some hit piece? but circumstances didn't really warrant it till now.
no one is saying JR is the only knucklehead ever in the league but at the very present moment, can't think of anyone who is as brazenly dumb as he is

JR Smith's parents, according to the article, are hard working suburban people who granted their son everything a kid needed....safe home, education, etc....
Sounds like your typical spoiled rich kid.
JR is a certified dumbass

Exactly my point. Taking advantage of his parent's money and using it to go down to the lowest common denominator instead of rising above that bullshit.
What kills me about my people is some kids lie about having good parents that had common sense and money and pretend they are from the ghetto when most ghetto kids would love to have that type of stability.

Because it's his job?
It's important to read Woj's pieces as editorials/commentary, not as the NBA writeups you usually see. While I used to think it was kind of annoying, it's also interesting to see an opinoin based on the players personality, like Woj wrote an article on Kobe's determination a few months ago, now he's got a piece on JR's immaturity. It's very different from Grantland's stuff (which I love as well).
I have no respect for this guy and his hatchet jobs.

He literally says something like "the Knicks and JR deserve each other". It's kind of implied this is a strange situation. it is, right now and mostly because it's so public. But prior to his extension, Z-Bo was being investigated for funding a drug ring. You know his history. Blatche will get a big extension next year and his "good behavior" includes escaping a sexual assault charge because the woman was too ****ed up to give a statement. We've had whole teams with people threatening to kill each other (Blazers), teams with guys shooting guns in the air and getting arrested, Shawne Williams threw a woman down a stairs. Give me ten minutes and I can do "The Last 30 Years of Knicks signing dumbasses", my new novel.
If you can play, you will get signed. By anyone. The Spurs keep bringing back Stephen Jackson. You could write books on him.
JR is a dumbass and if he lost his NBA career tomorrow it would be deserving, but Wojo wrote that piece to single him out in a way that's kind of dishonest. The main problem with JR is he is shooting a low pct. If he was hitting 40% on those threes, damn he'd be a funny guy for a lot of people.
JR got in trouble this week for being dumb, not for being a horrible human being. Unless I missed what really happened? Wasn't he untieing shoes? Again, i'm not defending JR, I just think that column and the coverage is getting to be a bit over the top. He didn't get convicted of a crime here. (I know his history, but that's not what happened now.)

So what you're saying is that Woj should have written an article about Smith, Randolph, Jackson, Blatche and a 10 year old Blazer roster at the same time in order for it "not to be unfair" to JR Smith?

If you grew up with them "they" would include "you."

I have no problem with Wojo wrote. Sure beats some fluff piece that skirts the issues because he's afraid the Knicks will never let him in the locker room again. That's the way sports writers use to write...

No, I'm saying he made the situation sound unique to the Knicks and JR Smith, which is patently untrue. If he didn't do so then bash away, but he did. He's zero'd in on JR. Someone else on this thread say that's the way reporters should be, yes - about everyone. Not about one specific person who irks them.
The only reason i gave examples is people keep insisting this is a unique situation and it's not.

You should stop saying this as it's false.
It's not fake, his baby mama decided not to press charges. That's not fake, that's a girlfriend covering up in a domestic incident. If it was fake someone should have told the Pacers because he got released pretty soon after.
Shawne Williams has a huge list of incidents btw. He was such a good player with the Knicks, and he left and a few years later he's half the player. It's not age clearly, it's not injury, he just has no focus.

JR Smith grew up in the town next to mine in Jersey. It's a rather affluent place and my cousin was in elementary school with him. I always wondered why he acts like a hoodlum. Literally the worst thing that could happen in central suburban Jersey is if GameStop was out of stock of the latest GTA.

Yup Millstone is pretty affulent. He did transfer to Lakewood, far from affulent, for two years to play for there coach. JR's issue was that he had an overbearing father that was working him harder than some NBA players in high school. Guy wasn't allowed to have any social life and lived and breathed bball until left his father for Prep.

seem like a typical story of a sheltered kid with strict parents who goes wild once at college with no adult supervision
Anyone who tries to make sure you know they are street usually is not. Because being poor and growing up in a shitty place isn't fun and not something you brag about. I remember the rapper Game, the first time I heard about him was in an interview where the DJ said he walks around with a backpack and his notebooks of poems and was the nicest down to earth guy, just wants to write and try to create music. Then he breaks and he's talking about the dope spot and people killing each other and stupid shit.

All Jr Smith would have to say is that he is aware that he is not playing well and that he needs to step it up and the Knicks deserve better. Everybody would get off his back. If he has an image that he feels he needs to maintain though and that doesn't correlate with it... well then it won't happen.
Does he have a nagging injury or something? I wouldn't be surprised if he was just that spoiled but maybe there is more than meets the eye.

It's not my fault, people can't look at a situation except black and white. JR being a ****ing idiot and being justly punished doesn't mean any article about him is allowed to be as biased and single focused as it wants. It doesn't mean people aren't overreacting to what was a shoelace untie. But no, if you think that then it means JR is innocent. Please...
Malik Rose was on ESPN with Alan Hahn this morning. He said it was blown out of proportion, he's had the shoelace thing done to him a few times, and he played with some teammates who did far worse. He also said JR is becoming a big distraction and the Knicks might not be able to get him under control and thus it's a serious situation.
