View Full Version : Why isn't anybody outraged about the NickName Jerseys?

Seven years ago during April of 2007, Jerry Stackhouse then of the Dallas Mavericks, wanted to celebrate and pay homage to sports and cultural icon Jackie Robison on Jackie Robinson Day (the first pioneer of a black athelete in American Major Sports) by wearing the name Robinson on the back of his jersey. He asked permission from the NBA and they quickly said NO.
Today, the NBA has pushed forward the new NickName Jerseys for every player in an obvious effort to sell more merchandise to the fans.
Am I the only one that is outraged over this? Why is nobody talking about it?

Yes. /Thread
As great as Stackhouse's idea was, it made sense that he was turned down because then the NBA puts themselves in a position of having to decide what is an OK exception and what is not, which would lead to more complaints because of the subjective nature. When the league makes a decision that they feel is beneficial they don't have to worry about a bunch of individual requests that put them in a tight spot.

Nick Young should be the only one allowed to play with a nickname on his jersey.

The fact anyone would be "outraged" by this is laughable.
And like Myth pointed out, imagine every NBA player wanting to dedicate a jersey to a specific person. Maybe Dirk is a sleeper soldier who wakes up and suddenly becomes Nazi and wears a Hitler jersey? Maybe Omri Casspi has a strong love for Osama? What about Kobe and LeBron desiring to be the Devil's lovers?
Nobody wants that.

Outraged? No.
Tacky? Yes.
XFL tacky? Yes.
But whatever it's a business and if it will make the league gain more money then so be it.

Because the nba utilized a flawless strategy....
They introduced the worst possible jerseys on Christmas Day, so by comparison everything introduced afterwards looks acceptable

Why isn't anybody outraged about the NickName Jerseys? When I hear the word "outrage" I think of things like slavery. The Sandusky case. The Holocaust. Craig Sager's wardrobe. Nickname jerseys? I thought Pierce should have used "THE Truth" instead of just "Truth" but otherwise I'm not working my way up the heart attack meter over this.

Can Lebron have "earned not given" on the back of his jersey?

I didn't like the idea and I didn't watch the game.
That being said, NBA will make millions off these jersey sales and they are in it to market and make money.
It's not as if the NBA is a not-for-profit organization :oldlol: just don't see anyone buying Pierce or Garnett nickname jerseys on the NETS. Celtics definitely, even if they were to issue them tomorrow I'm sure Celtic fans would purchase. But they ain't buying NETS jerseys, and I can't see Nets fans buying them because they are rentals.

Stackouse - "Can I put the name of one of the greatest pioneers in sports history on the back of my jersey in order to raise awareness of what an American hero he was?"
NBA- "No"
Lebron- "Yo can i put my nickname on the back of my jersey so I can inflate my ego and have stans worship me?"
NBA- "Yes, please do."
The stack house idea for Robinson is too racial IMO.
The NBA has already struggled with white America not tuning in to the NBA as a product and even though stack means well, any controversial issue like this could turn away even more fans.

since the nicknames were mostly lame, yes I am outraged. There were two good jerseys (PP and Ray).

how the **** is Jackie Robinson a controversial issue?
how the **** is Jackie Robinson a controversial issue?
Too much black pride IMO.
The nba is already mostly black and do white Americans want to see that? To be reminded how past generations of whites were segregating whites from colored folks?

I'm not sure I'm outraged, but these jerseys were awfully corny. I remember my school's junior varsity team went this route with their shooter shirts over a decade ago. Players donned such monikers as "Assassin", "T-Bone", and "Bluntz". I remember thinking it was one of the most bush league moves I'd ever seen. I never thought that group would end up being trend setters for the National Basketball Association.

What is wrong with you? Got dropped on your head or what.
Anyhow, it was painful to watch Heat-Nets highlights review with the announcer using those corny "nicknames". Reminds me very much of how likes of Michael Scott appreciates nicknames:

Yeah, the Knicks totally deserve that more, especially for all the choices you could use for Carmelo Anthony. I mean, 'Melo' would be the most obvious one, but the most relevant one would be 'glazed donut face'.
I thought it was completely lame. They had to make up nicknames for dudes who didn't even have one or if they did have one, nobody knew. What happened to having to earn your nickname? Now anybody gets one, B-Easy? S dot? Cole Train, wtf? Only Cole Train I know is from Gears of War.

Just like how the inception of the long sleeves jerseys by GSW quickly spread to other teams, I think these nickname jerseys will be worn by other teams in the near-future, whether or not you like it.

BR sucks and this article is from 2012.
Anyway tldr "I have heard Beasley referred to as "B-Easy" many times, but to me there is no more apt description of him than "The Roomba"
