I think the ball went to the side of Kobe's head and the angle made it seem like Barnes was trying to make him flinch. At any rate, not flinching means jack shit when talking about mental strength. Kobe could have slow reflexes for all we know.

Kobe always stayed strong mentally, never backed down to anyone, even to ****ing shaq, who's an eight-story building, they even had to be seperated in practice once of twice back in the day.
He's as strong mentally as anybody who played in the game.
You can hate his game, character or whatever, but his mental strength and work ethic is not to be messed with. Best in the business, maybe even best all-time

Naturally there's a flight or fight reaction. Trained personnel can override that instinct and properly assess situations and threat levels. Kobe gave him an ocular patdown and determined there was no threat.
