Right now he's at 25,855 points. good for 13th all time. Assuming he doesn't get hurt at the clip he's scoring now I figure he'll get about 1,000 more points by the end of the season putting him at 26,855 at which point he'll pass John Havlichek and Dominique Wilkins. vaulting up to 11th. After than here are the relevant people ahead of him.
No way in Hell
1st Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 38,387
2nd Karl Malone 36,928
Probably not gonna catch
3th Michael Jordan 32,292
4th Kobe Bryant 31,700
5th Wilt Chamberlain 31,419
In Range
6th Shaquille O'Neal 28,596
7th Moses Malone 27,409
8th Elvin Hayes 27,313
9th Hakeem Olajuwon 26,946
10th Oscar Robertson 26,710
He'll be 36 at the start of next season. 2 questions.
What's your guess at where he'll end up?
And for Dallas fans. What's the word out of Dallas for Dirk's feeling on going forward? Does he want to play for much longer? When is his contract up?

Without a major injury 30,000 points are possible.
Injuries are difficult to predict and old players get injured a lot.
I know that his shooting coach and mentor advised him to play as long as he helps the team, so I can see Dirk playing until he is 40.

he will take at least shaqs place rather easily even if he gets injured if its not a torn ACL or something:coleman:

He's still dropping 21 ppg at his age. If he can maintain 15-18 ppg for 3-4 more years, he can probably reach Shaq.

Assuming a conservative 40 of 43 games at 18.0 PPG, he

With his style of Play, I think he can Keep scoring on a high Level for a while. The 6th place is definitely realistic for him.

He's on pace at 21.3 PPG to surpass Hakeem for 9th THIS SEASON. Will end with 30k and 5th spot IMO. LeBron&Durant will surpass him, and then he'll stick at 7th for a loooong time.

He probably plays 2 to 3 seasons after this one. He gets around 800 more this year... most likely more than 1000 next year and more than 500 the year after that. He may add another year but then he's likely to add less than 500.
In terms of probabilities I'd say the most reasonable ending spot for him is either 7th or 6th.

Dirk's contract is up after this season. He'll likely take a 2 year discount type deal for around 10 or so million a year like Duncan did.
I think he could average something like 20/6/3 on 58% TS for the next 2 years if the team around him continues to improve.
After that it would all depend on how good the Mavs are. If we are really good and have a great roster...then he'll probably continue to play, but if he is on a team that needs to heavily rely on him just to squeak into the playoffs...then I bet he retires.

Dirk has 43 games left to play in the season. If he maintains his average and plays the rest of the season, he'll finish with 1715 points or so.
That would put him at around 26,766 points at the end of this season.
If he plays at least two more years at the same level he is playing this year and averages the same amount of points, he will finish with around 30,196 points for his career.

I think he plays two more seasons after this one, and ends up in 6th place with about 29000 points.

He'll probably fall short of Shaq. Gonna be the only white dude in the top ten.

You dont think he will score 1500 points for the rest of his career ?
I say he ends up near or at 30,000

Really? I mean I wouldn't say it's a lock but as of now he's only 2,741 points shy. The rest of this year and another 2 year contract seems like he's should be able to do it. He's been pretty healthy throughout most of his career so I doubt he'll get taken down by injury (although still possible). If he plays every game between now and then he'll only have to average 13.1 ppg to pass shaq. He would have to average 20 a game over the same stretch to get to 30,000. which will get harder and harder as he get's older, but if he plays say one more contract after that. another 1 year or maybe 2.... Seems like it's easily doable.
I'm with the people who say he's really fighting to get into the 30,000 club. He seems destined to end up 6th.
But because I'm a big Dirk fan (Not a mavs fan) and I want to see him succeed let's get greedy and see what it would take to pass Wilt.
If he plays every game between now and just before he turns 40 (his birthday is just after the season ends.) Hell only have to average 15.5 ppg to pass Wilt. and if he wants to get greedy and play the last season when he's 40 Then he only has to average 12.2 ppg
Ze German can do it!

I agree. Except if the team improves next year he will only need to score 18 per game?
I got him behind Wilt and above Shaq, so sixth on the all-time list when its said and done.
That's great when you think about it.
The scary thing is that one leg tends to do most of the push on his shot and one day he will see that he can't push off of it the same way. But he's definitely showing no sign of it now and is a super durable player.

The question is not how long he can play, but what the Mavs can do to put pieces around him. I doubt he wants to keep playing unless he has a real shot at title, which this current Dallas team does not.
One assumes he'll retire a Maverick but you never know. I'm sure most thought Pierce would retire a Celtic, Malone with the Jazz, Olajuwon, Pippen etc...
I'm not a Mav fan but I'd rather see him retire or sign with another team than get swept in the first round every year against a stacked West. He has a skillset that should keep him relevant for at least another 4 years so I hope he gets some players around him to give him another run, be it in Dallas or elsewhere.

It depends. I doubt the team is going to improve much offensively or scoring wise...we kind of have that down with Calderon, Ellis, and Dirk.
I'm talking about defense/rebounding...and maybe another sharp shooter.
All that would help Dirk scoring wise.
My guess would be that Dirk will average like 19.5/6/3 on 58% TS counting this year and 2 more if he's healthy.
After that he could be very valuable on a contender, but would not be able to drag pretty much any team to near 50 wins like he has for most of his career.

I think Cuban really likes him and let's him sign with Indiana at the end of the year to teach GP. Scoring dips significantly to the 14ppg range in RS. Outsiders Memphis or Portland he can get a point or two higher if he lands there. Three more years might be doable in those cases. They won't need 18ppg next year out of him in those situations. If he stays, more will be required of him.

I would love if Dirk finishes his career strong with Dallas. If they could get on a good defensive C..
