Chivas USA lol.
Hate to continue talking about TFC but I'm glad they are making this splash. It's only going to be great for the league if they end up becoming a "mega team" and have the ability to be the hottest team in town and draw in millions of canadian fans.
To think in one offseason they got Bradley, Defoe, Gilberto and DeRo. Not sure how they afforded it.
I think MLS increased cap but not being reported. THis is great for league hopefully they will be able to draw fans to stadiums on road

I will def be going to Red bulls vs toronto game
I think i'll root for NYC FC. I really don't have a strong affinity for the Red Bulls, and it will be closer to me to go to games (just jump on the BQE) when the stadium is finished.
Where will they be playing to start?

Don't really know what Philly was doing with that selection. Don't understand that logic at all and Blake to me sounds completely overrated. Best goal keeping prospect in the past 15 years? LOL, This is the MLS and college soccer and the guy can easily bust.
Worst of all the guy is what 24? Hardly the age for a prodigy and Zac MacMath is actually younger and was considered a can't miss GK prospect as well. I also heard they have one of the top keepers in their youth academy as well.
Just seems strange moving up to the first overall pick and selecting a position that they didn't need :confusedshrug:

I'm a Union fan and I didn't like the pick either. Apart from the fact that MacMath is only 22 and a year younger than Blake, we have a homegrown prospect in Zack Steffen who's being projected by a lot of scouts as a prodigious talent with the potential to be the GOAT US keeper. He was consistently outperforming MacMath as a 16 year old when he came to train with the Union.
That being said, I sort of understand the Blake pick. Apparently the Union aren't confident that they'll be able to sign Steffen because they think he'll have big money offers from teams in Europe and they're not at all happy with how MacMath has played. Getting Blake on a Generation Adidas deal means that he won't count against the cap and MacMath can be traded away for allocation money to help acquire a good foreign DP and/or make way for Maurice Edu.
I am intrigued by the other first round pick, Pedro Ribeiro. He's a versatile 6'4" Brazilian midfielder who's apparently really good on the ball. He could have been a top 5 pick but teams were hesitant to take him because he'd take up a foreign player spot.
Did you hear that New York Cosmos just signed Vancouver's first round pick, Andre Lewis? Tough week for the Whitecaps, Camilo forcing a move away from them and their top 10 pick getting stolen away by an NASL team. :lol

Also, what's happen to Patrick Mullins dropping to 11th to Rev? The dude had one of the best college soccer career ever, winning Hermann Trophy two years in a row, the first time in 40 years.
Seems teams opt to choose what they saw during combines rather than college records.

According to reports MLS owns him
MLS has admitted that Lewis is a Cosmos player but they have an agreement to get him on loan/work out a possible transfer.
"MLS has an agreement with Lewis and the Cosmos for him to join MLS and Vancouver, provided certain conditions are met," MLS vice president of player personnel Lino DiCuollo said. "In the event the Whitecaps want to retain the player, as of the roster compliance date (March 1), then he will be with them on a loan or after a transfer from the Cosmos."

Juventus offered 1 million for Sporting Kansas City's home-grown 16-years-old defender Erik Palmer-Brown. SKC turned it down.
Good job. USA Soccer should better not let another promising youngster go to other countries ala Giuseppe Rossi.
He has no path to Italian citizenship or any other European citizenship for that matter so there's zero similarities to the Rossi situation. It makes no sense for SKC to sell the kid either. He'd have to wait till he's 18 to join Juventus' full time and SKC would have no incentive to develop him.
Grinder
01-24-2014, 01:35 PM
Young foreign players can earn citizenship if they play in the club's country long enough, can't they? He is just 16. By the time he blossoms into a potential superstar he could have a dual citizenship and opt not to play of the country he was born.
Balotelli was born in Italy and couldn't get citizenship till he was 18. Also, Palmer-Brown has represented the US in competitions before without being eligible for another country so that makes him ineligible for any other country that he could potentially acquire citizenship in.
knickballer
01-24-2014, 01:48 PM
Erik Palmer-Brown would have 0 chance at playing for Italy. If he had Italian heritage then possibly there might be a chance but I doubt he'd be on the Italian radar when they are known for producing class defenders.
Interesting the transfer fee was for a million. It would have ranked probably in the top 10 of largest transfers in the leagues history but for KC it's not worth it since the MLS would have received majority of the transfer fee(probably 2/3) Better to have the kid play for the team and not count against the cap while he's a HG signing then in a few years possibly sign him and actually have majority of the transfer fee received by the team.
BTW, the first ever Intra-league loan happened with Tony Cascio going to Houston Dynamo. Lets see if intraleague loans happen and it's a decent way for teams to get some talent in positions of need.

He has only been with U-18. Senior national team is another story. Players who played for one youth national teams opt to represent others as senior all the time.
It doesn't happen as much as you'd think. Only if there's a heritage link you usually see it happening. Example some players with heritage from the ex-yugoslavia tend to play for Western European youth NT but then switch to their "blood line"(to put it in simpler terms) or the situation with players of North African descent representing French youth teams then switching to North African for senior representation.
You rarely see it happen if the player has no links to the country though.

I hope so. MLS is a much more respectable league today than when the Fusion were around.
knickballer
02-05-2014, 09:23 PM
I'm skeptical on the Miami team given the past history of MLS teams in Florida(albeit in a weak era)
If anything the MLS should see how Orlando does in the first 2-3 years in the league then give a decision to Miami.
Miami(and Florida in general) aren't a good "sports town"
BUT this Miami team will have a marketable appeal and will have a celebrity buzz which is ideal for a city like Miami. That and they'll probably go after popular players internationally.
BasedTom
02-05-2014, 09:32 PM
Even though Florida is probably known more as a (college) football state, the highest attendance ever for the state was a soccer match: http://www.sunlifestadium.com/news/71124-fans-for-brazil-vs-honduras-sets-state-of-florida-record
I think a lot of people here genuinely appreciate the sport of soccer. However the same could be said of baseball, and look at how the marlins have fared lately.
I don't think that people really care about the celebrity stuff. If the team sucks and the tickets are overpriced then I don't think people are going to want to pay money to sweat their asses off and to see washed up players get their ass kicked every time. Even if Beckham and Jennifer Lopez or Will Smith are in attendance. But if the team shows a legitimate desire to compete and acquire talented players, then that's a different story.

Chivas USA has made a new signing with British Luke Moore (http://mikesmind.sportsblog.com/post/582121/luke_moore_joins_chivas_usa.html)
While the Galaxy have signed two homegrown players in Bradford Jamieson & Raul Mendiola. Jamieson has been a mainstay on the Youth National Teams and is only 17. He scored 3 times in 11 matches for the Galaxy Academy. Jamieson was stolen from Chivas USA's academy. Mendiola is two years older at 19 and was a key part of the Academy's record this past season with 13 finishes.
Galaxy have done well with their academy in the past, pulling guys like Tristan Bowen, Gyasi Zardes, Jack McBean & Jose Villareal.

That's a seriously good academy. :applause:
Among the best in the MLS. I don't want to say the best because I don't know the rest off the top of my head.
But I won't be shocked if Jamieson ends up being the cream of the crop, or #2 behind Villareal.

MLSE and City of Toronto are close to make a deal to expand BMO Field. 10000+ seats and roofs will be added and the size of the field will be expanded for potential use as the new home for Argos Canadian football and maybe NHL outdoor games.
The question for now is that if the Argos actually move in, do they have to spend more to make a convertible grass/turf field so TFC fans and players don't get pissed off?
There's no other way in my opinion. I'm pretty sure Leweike has gone on the record to say he didn't approve of the joint-pitch idea. Either invest in the convertible grass or back off.
Ps - I haven't been this excited about TFC since the inaugural season. We've finally beefed up this roster with formidable players.

Spending has never been an issue with TFC as they've always managed to bring in "top" guys(for MLS standards) and always was one of the higher spending clubs. Stability and management seemed to be the issue.
Although Nelson was under scrutiny last year it does help to have the manager come back and TFC seemed to develop a young core over the past 2 years or so and brought in big names to make a push. That's a recipe for success imo.

There were some crazy games yesterday. Sounders winning on essentially the last kick of the game, Timbers equalizing with 4 seconds left in stoppage time, Dynamo, Crew, Whitecaps clobbering the Revs, NYRB, and DCU respectively.
The Galaxy, namely Robbie Keane, really blew a ton of good scoring opportunities and were deservedly punished for failing to capitalize. Rimando had a great save on the Keane PK...we're lucky to have him as our 3rd GK.

Yea, seattle vs toronto is a great matchup and I don't think there was such a marquee match with stars in the lineup. Closest I can think was back in 2011 when LA played NY(Henry's first match against LA) that featured Donovan, Becks, Henry, Juan Pablo Angel(was a hell of a striker back in the day), Rafael Marquez. Robbie Keane didn't join LA until that Summer.
Brings a tear into my eye seeing as the league has 4 "Mega-teams" in Seattle, NY, TFC and LA. Back then it was one Mega team(LA), then came NY with the spending, then SEA and now TFC.

Hopefully CDemp is healthy to go. He's been having nagging injuries and i'm sure that turf field doesn't help it.
And yea although Cooper hasn't been the best lately I think he's a very good striker. Hasn't lived up to his potential though unfortunately. Mario Gomez lite but tried to play as a winger which is stupid considering he has a massive body and a very good finisher.
Dempsey, Martins, Alonso, Pappa, Evans, Marhsall, Yedlin, Bradley, Defoe, De Rosario, Julio Cesar(GK). Alot of notable players who played in Europe or NT players.
But I think we'll see Toronto struggle though. Too many new guys and Seattle is a no joke team(well managed) and one of the most consistent sides since their expansion season.
I'm curious to see how Bradley is used. Probably as a deep lying playmaker

Defoe earning his pay right now the bat. His goals were nothing out of this world but characteristic of a quality striker. There aren't too many natural finishers like that in this league. He should have a hayday this campaign.

I was glad to see Dempsey score but man, he acted like a punk all game long and should have a red card for that cheap shot on bloom.
Cooper's always had great tools to be a target man but tries to play like he's a foot shorter. It's got to be a frustrating to be a fan of a team he plays on.
Bradley was all over the place yesterday. His work rate is insane and he really caused all sorts of trouble with his ball pressure. I thought Seattle had control of the game but that back pass from Pappa was suicidal and Defoe did what he does best - finish his opportunities.
I saw the Philly game and the Union look really good. Mo Edu will be one of the best CMs in the league along with Bradley, Beckerman, and Alonso. The other two new signings, Maidana and Nogueira have improved the team a lot.

TFC never has a striker as sharp as Defoe. Koevermans was very productive in different way when healthy. Chad Barrett is just a generic MLS level striker. Earnshaw was okay but is a one-trick pony.
Bradley is also another level of anchor midfielder. Frings was great but was on his last legs. De Guzman is only productive when surrounded by bigger stars and TFC then didn't have any.
Nelsen also has his defense set up since last season so now he can reap some rewards this year.
You're forgetting about prime DeRo when he was with TFC who's one of the best this league has seen. Frings and Kovermans were solid but very old and injury prone. Can't rely on 35 yr old DP's..

It is official. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank got the 22nd MLS franchise in Atlanta that will join the league in 2017, with NYC FC and Orlando City in 2015, and Becks' Miami team in the future.
They will play in the new Atlanta Falcons stadium that can be shrunk down from 70k seats to 30k for soccer.
FYI, NYC FC will play in Yankees Stadium for three years while Orlando City will play in Citrus Bowl til they get their own stadium.
am I the only one that thinks putting teams in Miami (again) and Atlanta is ****ing insane due to the extremely mediocre/fair weather sports fans in both those cities?

With you on this one and more so about Atlanta. I maybe ignorant on the city but they don't seem like a city that has a "soccer culture" or that much interest in the sport and cities support for other local teams is a bit concerning given the city size. Not a hockey fan but their hockey team had to move to Canada because they weren't getting any support, don't think soccer will fare that much better. The USSF should have USMNT friendlies and other soccer matches in the area to test support instead of just going all in.
Looks like Atlanta got it because they got the backing of Arthur Blank a powerful "figure" with NFL ties and has a potential stadium in the NFL stadium. This screams like the owner with the most $ getting the bid...
Expansion is happening wayyy to fast atm. Lets address other holes in the league like rebranding/relocating Chivas, focusing on getting more SSS, a viable second tier league(which will open the gate for expansion), quality of play and budgets.
PS, but i do think Orlando City is going to be a decent hit though. Although Florida is a shitty market for sports Orlando seems to be an exception and the city doesn't have that many sports teams which will increase interest. Hopefully it will be something like Portland

Orlando City I get b/c they draw upwards of 8k for a 3rd tier USL Pro team.
If Atlanta was getting the NASL Atlanta Silverbacks who have been there for a long time and actually have a fanbase to build on it would be more reasonable.
But to just create a new MLS team in a city known for being iffy with fan support (remember when the Hawks couldn't sell out playoff games recently?) while there is already an NASL team in town seems to be silly.
Also, sticking them in a pro football stadium, even at a reduced seating capacity of 30k for their games, seems foolish at best when even the Braves have trouble getting than many people out. It probably will end up looking like New England Revolution or DC United games where even if they get a decent 15k-20k crowd it will look like a ghost town.

TBH, it's all about marketing/exposure for the all-star game because neither the All-stars nor the opposing team take the game too seriously.
But I do find it funny when eurosnobs discredit the MLS when the all-stars lose but they totally avoid the fact that SKC's B team pounced on Man U's starters a few years back and so on and say it was only a friendly.

I don't take too much of it to be honest with you. Although it is fun to watch the MLS all stars match up against the big clubs in Europe because essentially they are an all star team themselves. Just looking at their roster compared to ours.
I know it is for fun but there is some competition seeing as we are America and they are a bunch of Euro misfits. They have their soccer superiority and we have our national superiority. So the narrative is good but the games aren't as serious as I wish for.

Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas, DC United, and Toronto FC are the best teams so far this year.
Right now Seattle has a pretty solid lead in the race for the Supporter's Shield which goes to the team with the best overall regular season record and gets you a spot in CONCACAF Champions League.

The best in the league at player development. They draft extremely well, they know when to loan out there young players to get experience(done wonders for Dwyer and Sapong) and they are making efforts for their affiliate teams for player development.
They built a solid core that's very cost efficient, young and not injury prone. That's the recipe for success in the MLS and I know that NYFC are going in for a rude awakening thinking aging stars in Lampard and Xavi will be able to last an entire MLS season when in reality is they'll be fit for half the season and miss the other half with lingering injuries.

I really hope there's a provision in the next CBA where homegrown and US internationals can be paid DP money without counting against the cap. These silly salary cap rules are standing in the way of an MLS team winning CCL and the league is stable enough that it doesn't need all these rules to stay sustainable anymore. Teams like SKC are essentially being punished by having to pay two national team guys they developed therefore not being able to buy some good foreign DPs.

On paper DC may only have one DP but they spent pretty heavy this offseason to rehaul their roster. Franklin, Eddie Johnson, Espindola, Silva, Boswell, Parke, Rolfe, etc. Alot of them were a bit pricey and borderline DP(Franklin and I'm not sure if Johnson is an actual DP) but kudos for them because I thought they were going to be trash this season.

GA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_adidas)

It's not the Home Grown slot he had in mind. The current home grown slot guarantees that the academy player won't count against the cap with his first contract but it's really not that significant as the player would be making near the minimum($40k or so) and the player is probably extremely raw. But after 3-4 years that homegrown slot doesn't count and the player will count against the cap.
I think what he's trying to say is if a team develops an established star they should be able to sign him to a "Homegrown DP" contract that won't count against the cap(or very little) instead of losing him to a European side. Would give an incentive for teams to develop their players more. Could have possibly saved some fringe USMNT players by staying the MLS in the past where they left for Europe as they were able to make more wages there while the MLS teams didn't have the cap for them.
BTW, anyone heard of Harrison Shipp? Rookie winger for the Fire. Everytime I watch him play he looks like a poor mans Arjen Robben.. Good dribbling ability, cuts in alot and is a very good scorer from distance. Might be a NT player soon if he keeps it up

Yep, that's exactly what I mean. That way teams would be able to hold on to guys rather than them having to go to Scandinavia or the English second division.
I've seen Shipp a few times. Really like his game - he's got great close control and vision but I worry about how his lack of athleticism will translate to the international level.

I actually don't like the move from Houston's perspective. Don't think Beasley is a bad player but he's been kinda overrated lately from US fans. He's going to be 32 and the main aspect of his game is his pace. Houston is a team that needs offense and probably help in central defense and I Just don't see Beasley making that much of an impact.

Gotta disagree here man. I think Beasley will be very successful in MLS. I saw some of his games in Liga MX (he was almost exclusively a left winger) and he's a smart decision maker on the ball, crosses accurately, and makes timely runs into the box and finishes well. He also puts in a good shift defensively even in the midfield. I think he'd be wasted if he was only used as a left back but if he's played in his natural position with Davis as the playmaker, they'll be a formidable duo.

Galaxy tops the Timbers 3-1, now has 33 points in 19 matches, Sounders are sitting at 38 points and 20 matches, while RSL has 36 points in 22 matches. Worst case scenario, Galaxy end in second, but taking the conference is possible with a match in hand & 2 games remaining.

Portland (who I root for) has been pretty bad this year. :facepalm Seattle has pretty much owned Portland's soul for this entire season - hopefully Portland can rebound since it's at home for them. A win would really give more hope for Portland to potentially cling onto that 5th seed.

Most MLS teams just don't care about the CCL enough due to the way the league is set up and it becomes a nuisance for MLS teams instead. MLS teams don't have the depth to survive both the league play and CCL and with the long travel in midseason it becomes difficult..
I think Sporting KC has the best chance as they have the deepest team in the league and they've been rotating their players all season. Their guys will be relatively fresh in the competition while I think my team(NYRB) aren't gonna last as we have crap depth and Theirry Henry probably won't play in the group stages for the competition and if Henry doesn't play we don't have a chance..

NE Revolution won the Jermaine Jones sweepstake, beating out Chicago Fire.
I guess it's unfortunate for him but there was no market for him as teams were unwilling to offer him $5mil per season. Personally, I think he's not worth the money(not even half) and I would look elsewhere with my DP slot. He's going to be 33 soon and I see him having alot of injury problems and it normally takes a while for the European based DP's to adjust to the league so we can consider this season a wash for him. He's pretty much an "enforcer" and I feel like you can find quality enforcers in the MLS for non-DP contracts like Dax McCarty who I wouldn't trade for Jones even if they made the same salary.. Not like Jones is going to spike up attendance either.
So yeah IMO it's a panic buy. 5 million is insane for Jones and it's a result of a great WC. If he didn't play in the World Cup for example I don't think he'd get 2 million truthfully.

Kreis picking a few guys he coached in the past. Smart move as they know what they want from each other and Kreis can trust them with helping the team compete in the first year. Patrick Mullins is a nice pick too.
As for Orlando City kinda surprised they got Okugo. He was highly touted in the past and maybe his stock has fallen? Collien is a great CB though

Brek Shea flop(really thought he was gonna be good), Juan Agudelo flop(Same..), Jozy Altidore hasn't scored a goal in god knows how long, etc, most of our domestic products are failing in Europe. Alot Some encouraging players like Hyndman and Rubin.
It's no surprise that our better talents are the ones with German origin and being developed in Germany/Europe.

It's official: Jermain Defoe is going back to EPL, joining Sunderland. TFC will get Jozy Altidore as a part of the deal.
Great deal for both teams. They both get proven strikers that fit for their own leagues.
A little disappointing that the "Bloody Big Deal" campaign ends this quickly. Defoe did play very well when healthy also.

Okay, it is not it yet. There is another big obstacle against TFC, the MLS itself.
Although the swap has been completed, Altidore is not yet a Toronto FC player. Altidore played for the New York Red Bulls from 2006-08, meaning he would have to go through Major League Soccer's allocation process for re-entry into the league. Toronto FC sits sixth in the allocation rankings and the club doesn't believe any of the teams ahead of them have interest in the player (Montreal, San Jose, Colorado, Chicago, Houston). However, there is sentiment among many the league would prefer to see Altidore land with an American based team, namely back with the Red Bulls. Toronto FC wants to keep the player. But depending on how the process plays out, they may be forced into a settlement with said team ahead of them in the allocation rankings if they decide they want Altidore. Again, Toronto FC doesn't want the cash transaction; they want the player.
This adds an intriguing wrinkle; if MLS head office wants Altidore in New York, they can make it happen. As sensational as it sounds, MLS could in fact play a role in Altidore landing elsewhere despite the swap deal agreed upon by Toronto FC and Sunderland. Which begs the question; how does MLS feel about having two of the top US Men's National team players both playing for Toronto? The Red Bulls are the team to watch in the coming days. If they jump up in the allocation process, they threaten the chances of Altidore joining Toronto FC while raising questions about league influence in transfer dealings. The drama and intrigue revolving around Altidore's landing spot will play out in the coming days. If all goes to plan, Altidore will be a Toronto FC player.
edit: TFC is also about to sign Juventus' playmaker Sebastian Giovinco. That could mean they have to ship Altidore somewhere else to free a DP spot.

Another Canadian picked first overall again, this time in MLS!
Cyle Larin, a striker from Brampton, ON and the University of Connecticut, was picked first overall by Orlando City.
TFC got the 6th, 9th and 11th, and they pick the best American goalkeeper prospect available Alex Bono and another Canadian Skylar Thomas, both from Syracuse, and a defender Clement Simonin from NC State.
Also, MLS officially announced the use of the new logo, and renaming MLS MVP Award to Landon Donovan MVP Award. :oldlol:

Marcelo Sarvas dealt to the Crapids for the third allocation slot and some allocation money, with rumors of Sacha Klestjan being the target, yet again.
Klestjan, Gerrard, Juninho, Husidić, Villareal & Ishazaki is going to be great feeding into Keane/Zardes

It looks like Gilberto would be the odd DP out to make room for TFC to sign Sebastian Giovinco.
Bradley and Giovinco in the middle should basically be the best midfield pair in the league.

Good for TFC but I don't understand why they don't take the resources to go after a well established manager instead of hiring inexperienced managers? They put alot of money in their players and without a proper manager they aren't being utilized to the max. I know they hired Robin Fraser as an assistant and that's a good move because I think he's a quality assistant manager that will help out in the defensive aspects of the game.
But this is gonna be a big year for TFC. If they don't make the postseason I'm afraid they may halt their ambitious plans of signing big players which is bad for us all. I'll be rooting for them as I think this year is gonna be a disaster for NYRB.

TFC wants to dump some money in and Tim Bezbatchenko is the one who dealed with this kind of thing in MLS front office on regular basis. So the GM hiring seems right so far. But the thing is that "Bloody Big Deal" campaign is a bloody failure, that potentially 2 of 3 big names they promoted are gone by year 1, could hit hard among supporters.
They have invested hard on defense on SuperDraft though. That seems like a good direction I believe.

TFC has officially signed Sebastian Giovinco for an MLS record deal 5 years, $7 millions. That also means Gilberto will be moved to make a DP spot for Giovinco.
This will make TFC salary cap in 2016 to be around $22-25 millions, even higher than some MLB clubs.

7 mils for Giovinco, 6 mils for Bradley, and reportedly 5 mils for Altidore.
I really wonder where is the money TFC will get for those guys. Some from Leafs maybe? :oldlol:

Freddy Adu is reportedly in talks with two MLS teams for a potential second comeback after another failure to launch in Europe yet again. It is said also that none of his former teams (DCU, RSL, Union) are interested in him though.
Emanuel Adebayor is also reportedly interested to go west and join MLS.
