A little too early to put Giannis in that group, obviously, but he has the tools and athletic ability to be an elite perimeter defender in the future.

MJ, Pippen, Payton, Joe D, Moncrief, Bowen, Alvin Robertson. Sure there's some that are slipping my mind.

Lebron, kawhi. tony allen a lot of the times can guard the 3 well too but he guards 1and 2 better.

LeBron couldn't guard Rondo in any series he was torching Bron.

It's one thing to guard Rose when he was chucking during the '10-'11 playoffs. It's another thing to guard an actual PG like Chris Paul, Rondo, or Westbrook.

I don't like when people say LeBron can guard 1s. He has almost never guarded PGs when they are the best player on the other team, unlike MJ and Kobe.

He guarded parker well in the finals last year.
Also, Jordan had to let pippen guard magic. Nostalgia is such a great thing though.

Difference being, the other two were guards, so it was expected of them, more so, than of Bron.

:oldlol: That would be unfair for the league. There would be absolutely nothing any team could do, just pure domination.

Glad to see you're a Giannis fan now

Boris Diaw can guard everybody. From clutch blocks on PGs to shutting down Dirk and Lebron to playing lockdown D on crappy centers, he is the only true 1-5 defender in the league :applause:

Kirilenko can (could) guard 1-3 at an elite level, as could Shawn Marion.

All time:
Scottie Pippen
Michael Jordan
Lebron James
Tony Allen
Ron Artest
Kobe Bryant
Gary Payton
John Havlicek
Michael Cooper
Dennis Rodman
Bruce Bowen
Alvin Robertson
Joe Dumars

Alvin & Joe were only like 6'3-6'4 but the toughest sob's you could ever find at that size, they could take care of 3's, Alvin infact was a SF/SG/PG in the 80s.

Today:
Lebron James
Tony Allen
& maybe Paul George, i think he is capable.

Can't believe no one said Michael Cooper. He'd be my first choice here, probably. There have been better players, although few, at guarding 1's, 2's(only Moncrief though imho) and 3's but if you "combine" and want a player to defend PG's, SG's and SF's at elite level, I'd go with Coop. An amazing athlete, great defensive fundamentals, 6'5'' w/o shoes with a huge wingspan, lots of stamina, skinny but strong, very smart knew all the tricks in the book (studied his biggest matchups a whole lot too), didn't gamble much, had great recovery time, could steal the ball, play the lanes, and could block dudes like Larry Nance at the rim, for example.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7K-oa2bDFY

My other choices would be:

Moncrief (best defensive SG imo and pretty versatile but lacked some height to guard some 3's)
Pippen and Pistons/peak-defensively Rodman (quicker, smaller PG's could be more of a problem though)
MJ (a great all-around defensive player but could get burnt by bigger dudes in the post, like what happened with Bird)
Bowen or peak Artest (to some extent because some guards could cause too much trouble)

Then also Lebron (let's not act like he's not a really good choice here), Bobby Jones (had the height, the athleticism and the fundamentals to guard anyone but some guards could've been too much trouble), Tony Allen, Hondo, Paul Pressey, peak-defensively Kobe..............

Bryant's name has arisen in my mind very first. I defenitely remember his great defense on Jennings (afterwards Jennings said that it was the best defense he had ever had on him), Terry (Dallas playing Lakers at SC around 2008), and James (last ASG and during James' days in Cleveland).

It's never too early. He's already 2nd in MVP voting behind Durant, and just knocked off Gary Payton on the all time rankings list. He'll bypass Jordan max his 3rd year.

Posting Parker's shooting stats and FG% is kind of dumb. Unless you can show Lebron was on Parker 100% of the time (which we all know he wasn't) it's like giving Lebron credit for shots Parker may have missed against Chalmers or any other defender who could have switched on him. Besides that Lebron is never really on an island by himself against anyone defensively. He always has defenders flanking giving him a lot of help on the perimeter. Spoelstra has a great defensive scheme

he does defend a lot of 4s like west. also it was pippen guarding magic and now jordan. pippen also guarded the best perimeter player on the other team most of the times.
Jordan was great defensively but don't suck his dick so hard. lebron gaurds 1-4 pretty well but all good teams run a lot of screens for PGs and it is just not good for miami to make lebron run around the court and that is why he only guarded parker in key stretches. spurs had 2-3 screens for parker some times.
playoff lebron is easily one of the best perimeter defenders of all time. Miami's defense requires too much effort and you can't give your 100% everyday. they need a rim protector for regular season at least as that will help the players save some energy for playoffs. you can only play miami's type of defense to its fullest impact for only a quarter or 2 but not for whole games.

if you actually watched those games, you'd realize parker would only look good when lebron was not on him. same thing happened to PG in game 7 against miami. lebron was on him for pretty much the whole game.

Someone that should definitely be considered is Ron Harper. Harper on the Bulls made such a huge sacrifice to his game and devoted himself to defense and it showed.

That team was scary because of how versatile, especially after adding Rodman.

Harper
Jordan
Pippen
Rodman

Those 4 were such incredible defenders that were all versatile enough defensively to be able to defend at least 3 positions each at a high level.
