What are some rock bands that would be good for someone new to the genre?

I've been a hip-hop, r & b, and soul fan my whole life. I am just looking to expand my interests.

List me 3 bands or so that you would recommend.

The "Rock" genre is so diverse that I really wouldn't know where to start with recommendations. As far as what I like, I really dig Alice in Chains, Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, just a bunch of Seattle sound/grunge bands. The first real "rock" band I listened to was Aerosmith, followed shortly by Guns N' Roses, and with each one I had a good several-months-long obsession with their material in which I would only listen to that band's material.

If you're into Soul and tradition RnB, then there's a fair amount of crossover with the 60s rock bands. It shouldn't be tough to get into some of the Stones stuff. Of course if you start with The Stones it's sort of all downhill after that. A lot of the southern rock bands are really just rock bands with a heavy dose of influence from Blues and southern soul. Skynard and The Allman Bros. for example. The Black Crowes sort of come out of that tradition.

And I've found that a lot of hip hop fans adapted easily to The Police. It seemed at the time in large part because of Puffy Combs collaborating with Sting on that Biggie tribute, but the truth is is that The Police have a heavy rhythm section that doesn't sound that far off from a hip hop beat in some cases. Zeppelin carries that heavy rhythm too, and they've been sampled a ton too because of it. So that makes them pretty accessible for people really trying to get into it.

I really fail at these threads since I'll recommend something only a veteran fan would be able to appreciate. I guess for a rock newbie you should try some classics albums like Led Zeppelin IV and Back In Black and see what you think.

I remember a guy on another forum who tried getting into rock music and out of all my suggestions the one he loved the most was Let There Be Rock. I was all :wtf: People are weird and unpredictable so it's really hard for people here to recommend something without knowing you.

I'd probably suggest The Black Keys and The White Stripes as two bands to check out. More modern than your classic rock acts and they are very popular/good.

That's a good suggestion as far as modern bands are concerned.

Amen to that.

This is actually where I'd start if I was him, specially the obvious RATM.

And like some mentioned, some of the Classic Rock bands that were more blues and r&b influenced such as Stones, Allman, Floyd.

I wouldn't dive into some of the sub-genres immediately and just play it safe with middle of the road radio rock (well.. not the current indie/hipster crap), bands such as STP, Foo, PJ, Black Keys are good.

Also even tho some will laugh, from past experiences I've noticed that some of my friends transitioned over to rock by listening to Creed :wtf: :confusedshrug:

Some actual good 'indie' rock bands that aren't full of hipster sucky.

Some shout outs to bands like 22-20s and the Rakes as well.

something that hit me, have you tried listening to Trip-hop?

That can serve as a great transition into rock. It has for the most part the same hip hop elements (sampling, heavy drums, bass, DJing, MCing). While incorporating rock elements as well (guitars, structure).

Of course, the most obvious example is Portishead which was big in the hip hop community when they came out.

That can aid you better into having a more diverse taste without straying too much away from your comfort zone.

Here's some UNKLE:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=269WVoT5aao

Here's Archive:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgoi5COn6PE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4mcHfZOX5k

Some of Archive's music can easily be transposed into hip hop and have somebody like Ye rap over it.

Rob Dougan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtAmFKaThNE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrXpD4AtWaY

You've heard his music all over the net, films, commercials etc. his music is very easy to listen to if you're a hip hop fan because it has the same elements of break beats and samples.

Yeah we need one of those decision tree flow charts.

1. Go here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYRTGskBRh0) and put on AC/DC's Back in Black.
2. Close the door, lay on your back and listen with headphones turned up for 20 minutes
3. Come back here and tell us if you like it.

From there we can figure out you like and what you don't.

They're both really rhythm based too, which I think helps jumping from the other genres.
