Kobe was never going anywhere but the Lakers once he knew West liked him. As that article says he wouldnt even work out for anyone...he worked out with the Nets early....then found out the Lakers wanted him.

They told John Calipari(then coach of the Nets) he wouldnt come. THat he would play 2 years in Italy to be a free agent and then sign where he wanted if the Nets took him.

Kobe didnt fall by chance. He fell to 13 because he wouldnt go to the Nets who wanted him at #6 or 8...dont remember which. But its a fairly well known story.

Calipari has been saying he should have called the bluff and drafted him anyway for years.
