View Full Version : It's going to stay damn cold. What is up with the weather?

It hit 50 degrees today in Alaska, meanwhile most of the US is freezing. My ferry in NYC was delayed today because the river is freezing.
Warm Weather is shooting up the West Coast while cold air is diving back down across the midwest and northeast.

Also Hawaii got 50 foot waves today. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH4IFZrpVJA#t=14)
Supposedly this might happen more often due to global warming. As the Arctic warms, the temperature difference between it and the mid latitudes decreases which leads to a greater likelihood we get these crazy dips of Arctic air. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2014/01/23/the-polar-vortex-explained-in-two-minutes/)
Last Week the weather station 5,000 feet up Mount Rainier (http://www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/scott/Monster-inversion-Mt-Rainier-station-warmer-than-Las-Vegas-240934381.html)was warmer than Las Vegas.

Cold Weather in January?
Um, 50 degrees in Alaska in January is damn warm.
Tuesday and Wednesday next week are going to be rough.
Once again, the Midwest, Northeast and the South will experience frigid temperatures.
By Monday and Tuesday, many cities in these regions will see temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below average, right during the climatologically coldest time of year.

This is the dip I was talking about. It dips over the US, but first there's a rise over the Pacific. The warm pacific air goes crazy high and then cold air rushes back down over the center of North America.

Those crazy waves that hit Hawaii are now at California and the surf community is psyched.
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/sports&id=9405348
Possible record-breaking waves expected at Mavericks
Twenty-four of the world's best surfers will compete Friday in the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational. And while surfers normally thrive on the big waves, conditions this year are making some surfers nervous.
Waves the surfers saw Thursday are nothing compared with what they expect Friday. They may be the biggest waves ever, possibly 50-feet-tall.
"I don't think you'll ever hear one of the boys that are invited admit that it's too big," Mel said. "But I'll tell you from my experience out there, a lot of experience, this is going to be a big swell."

Sick of the cold? Head for Alaska, where some towns Thursday morning were warmer than in Florida.
The weather seems more than a bit upside down.
The average temperature for the Lower 48 states midmorning Wednesday was a chilly 22 degrees. The average temperature for the entire state of Alaska at the same time was 24 degrees, according to calculations by Weather Bell Analytics meteorologist Ryan Maue.
Parts of Alaska were 30 degrees warmer than normal, southeastern Alaska hit 57 earlier in the week and the forecast for the rest of week was more unseasonable warmth, said National Weather Service climate science manager Rick Thoman in Fairbanks. He said it's possible that the state record January high of 62 could be broken later this week.

Next Polar Plunge Could Be Winter's Coldest
The next blast of brutal cold will grip most of the eastern two-thirds of the United States early this week and could yield the lowest temperatures so far this winter in many communities.
While harsh cold is returning to the Midwest and Northeast this weekend, it will pale in comparison to what will follow for Monday through Wednesday.
The impending polar plunge will rival the frigid days from earlier this January for the coldest daytime highs and nighttime lows so far this winter. This does not include South Florida.
The arctic air is first plunging into the Upper Midwest, northern Plains and northern Rockies this Sunday, then will continue pressing to the south and east through Tuesday.
They are expecting snow in New Orleans

there was a really cool mural put up this past summer opposite the grocery store. unfortunately they didn't spray paint it, but silked it on to a plexiglass pieces... maybe 50 feet long in all... then attached that to the brick.
arctic chill came along two weeks ago and laughed at that redfoo... cracking it to pieces and asking which mofo was next to bat. city council barely made a peep this time.
remember, gang: politicians are never heroes, especially when they rely on plexiglass.
