Current era with new rules it's a tie between him and Wade. All time he's easily among the best.

He's possibly the best at driving to the hoop and creating a play (passing or scoring), especially when surrounded by shooters. His athleticism + size + court vision make him unique in this regard.
It's really the only thing he has a claim at for being the best ever. Not that it's particularly important as he's an all rounded player.

Yep, Wade was great too.

Im just talking about driving and layupping. I suppose you could include dunking, but then it would be more about the best dunker, which he is not.

This is what we're reduced to calling LeBron the best at now?

Kobe will always be the best penetrator of all time. Even when you don't want it, he just forces his way into the hole and finishes. Right in your face.

Michael Jordan is the best. You forget the insane amount of difficult layups he got in the 80's.
Derrick Rose was also better at contorting his body and making the shots. So was Iverson, and probably Monta Ellis/Kevin Johnson.

just because it's prettier and more acrobatic doesn't mean it's more effective :facepalm

MJ at his athletic peak was better than LeBron at this.
Hell, compared to his 09-10 self, LeBron isn't really anywhere near as good at driving now. He sacrificed some athleticism for strength (which makes sense), but he used to be near unstoppable going to hole. He struggles taking quicker defenders off the dribble and needs multiple screens now.
MJ was better in this regard (quicker, more flexible) which is why I included the passing aspect. Lebron's court vision is better than MJ's, which means he has a case for being the best ever driver & passer/finisher. But he's not the best driver and finisher.

LeBron is the best at finishing at the rim ever.

can anyone find stats for finishing at the rim for MJ, Lebron, Kobe, etc?
Career wise and/or peak season wise.

Jordan was definitely more athletic at his peak pound for pound. But we've never seen anything that came close to combination of size/speed/skill like Lebron...it's arguable though.

Wade has the most phantom calls I have seen in my life. People are scared to even defend him when he drives.
Maybe not all time but Tony Parker is a great lay up finisher. He doesn't have uber athleticism or vertical explosion but he's crafty and has great horizontal speed.

I remember in the finals between the Cavs and Spurs it was like he Tony couldn't miss a layup. He made multiple shot where he just dove forward and tossed the ball up but still somehow managed to get them in.

He might be, but I don't know. We don't know the stats for the other players on drives. I think LeBron is among the all time finishers tho. He's the best in our era.
At the moment, Tony Parker is epic at it as well. Durant and Wade are too. Jeremy Lin is one of the tops this season as well, surprisingly.
But with all time: I would assume you would have to put Jordan, Barkley, James Worthy, and Adrian Dantley up there.

If you mean "Is LeBron the greatest at making layups taken while driving to the basket?" and you aren't considering how good he is at driving to the basket in the first place, then I believe it's possible. However, if you're also including the ability to get to the basket itself, then the answer is no. Despite his overwhelming athleticism in other regards, he simply does not have a very quick first step, and this has always limited his ability to drive to the basket (which is still world class, just not GOAT-worthy).
