I watched a year or so later by myself and balled my eyes out. But the tears don't come if the first two weren't absolute masterpieces. :confusedshrug:

Shining is a top 3 Kubrick film. :coleman:
Just happens to be one of my least favorite by Mr. Kubrick.

Then again... I'm not a big Jack Nicholson fan. The movie just annoyed me in general.

I was uncomfortable with it. What are your top Kubrick films? You already know mine

Myth

They're completely different films so it makes sense that there is no true consensus, but Alien had the greater critical acclaim, iirc.

Both amazing films.

RottenTomatoes:

Alien: 97% critics, 8.8 average score. 94% audience, 3.8/5 average score.
Won Academy Award for Visual Effects and nominated for Best Art Direction.

Aliens: 98% critics, 8.9 average score. 94% audience, 3.8/5 average score.
Nominated 7 Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Best Music, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Art Direction, and won Visual Effects and Sound Effects Editing.

So nearly identical acclaim.

Aliens did the action genre straight justice while Alien is a slow, dark film. The end of Alien is a bit of a let down, but Aliens has a ton of horrific parts. For instance, it has what might be the worst child performance of all time.

Yeah, the acclaim is about the same. I just love the military guys going in and still getting ripped to shreds. Then somehow Paul Riser plays the perfect corporate slime ball. It is so out of character for him that it actually makes it perfect. Plus, Rippley going BAMF in the loader against the queen alien is one of the GOAT scenes of any movie IMO. That said, I don't find Alien's let down at all. Very suspenseful. My love for the sequel in no way diminishes that awesomeness of the original.

For some reason, Newt never really bugged me. When they first find her, I view her as an emotionally removed, traumatized girl. She then progresses to trust Ripley, starts to regain her emotions through that attachment, and expresses that well enough. Is she a great actress in it? Hell no. Her screams sound fake and her line delivery aren't great, but I think she does a decent job with facial expressions for her age. Also, even when the lines are not delivered with great acting, somehow the impact is great and the lines are memorable: "You're all going to die" and "They mostly come at night, mostly."

The first two were much better IMO. :confusedshrug:

A couple of manly tears were shed. I grew up on those movies and it's like they grew up with me. When it was time to move on it was like saying goodbye to my childhood. But Up! had me more teary. I think Up! is right up there with TS 3 and 1 for me.

I like all of the TS movies, but TS3 hit home for me. It's hard to decide between TS3 and TS1. TS2 was my least favorite, but I still really like it.

It isn't a true trilogy. Part of it is like the Tarantino universe. They refer to it as the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, the Cornetto Trilogy, and The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy. They all also have the same theme of fitting in with society and the push back against being mindless and brainwashed by society.

I'm a big fan of Fellini's stuff (although I tend to revisit films like La Strada and I Vitelloni more than 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita). I also quite like Kurosawa's films, especially Rashomon and The Bad Sleep Well. Unfortunately, I still haven't seen a Bergman film I liked, with the slight exception of Wild Strawberries; I haven't seen any of his films made after Strawberries but the ones I've seen made before feel very cynical and a little dry. Can you suggest any of his films after Wild Strawberries?

Honestly, I randomly threw his name out there because I've heard he's a master filmmaker every lover of film should at least study and pay attention to, :lol

I recently got into Bergman earlier this week and have only seen 'The Magician' (1958). Definitely would recommend it. From what I've read about it in comparison to his others, it's his most accessible and straightforward. And, I wouldn't describe it as either "cynical" or "dry". Other films post-'Wild Strawberries' that I see recommended all the time are 'Persona', 'Hour of the Wolf', 'Cries & Whispers', and 'Fanny & Alexander'.

I see. Those three are considered the Holy Trinity of foreign directors so that makes sense.

I'll check The Magician out soon. Persona is another film that interests me, because I heard Bergman made it as a response to Godard's films.

'The Magician' is seen as Bergman's response to critics and audiences who didn't like the "complicated metaphysics" of his earlier works. His TV mini-series 'Scenes From a Marriage' is another title I see get a lot of hype.

Ha, not really. I try to retain myself when I talk to other people about movies, and I still like quite a lot of the more modern and recognizable films (Skyfall and Looper were two of my favourites from 2012).

Were Eyes Wide Shut, Chinatown, The Master, Mean Streets and...um...Five Easy Pieces the 5 you've heard of?

No likeable, recognizable films from 2013? :lol

Those were the 5. Haven't actually seen Five Easy Pieces though.

[QUOTE=T_L_P]Nice list. I've seen them except Head-On, which I've honestly never heard of. I'll add it to my watch list though.

My 6-20 roughly goes like this:

6. The World (Zhangke)
7. L'Argent (Bresson)
8. Histoire(s) du Cinema (Godard)
9. Out 1 (Rivette)
10. I Was Born, But... (Ozu)
11. Lola (Demy)
12. 79 Springtime (

Thanks a lot, man

I'm a big fan of Fellini's stuff (although I tend to revisit films like La Strada and I Vitelloni more than 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita). I also quite like Kurosawa's films, especially Rashomon and The Bad Sleep Well. Unfortunately, I still haven't seen a Bergman film I liked, with the slight exception of Wild Strawberries; I haven't seen any of his films made after Strawberries but the ones I've seen made before feel very cynical and a little dry. Can you suggest any of his films after Wild Strawberries?

The Seventh Seal is definitely my favorite Bergman movie that I've seen. Straightforward yet complex story with some great camera work and really interesting scenes with death. I'm a sucker for existential themes too so this may be why I love it so much.

I was expecting some arcane selections, but I wasn't expecting to only recognize 6 out of 16 titles, :oldlol: The 3 of those 6 I've actually seen were very good, so I trust you have a lot of good material there worth seeing. Were most of these suggested to you by another, or do you just like to blindly experiment?

Which 3 have you seen?

I usually look at lists (Sight and Sound Poll, TheyDon'tShootPicturesDoThey) and watch the most acclaimed film by a certain director. Then, depending on how much I like said film, I continue to explore the directors' filmography. Either that or I just buy the Masters of Cinema Blu-Rays!

I wish 'Masters of Cinema' released Region A Blu-rays, because they have quite a few solid releases from what I've seen in disc reviews. I'm sure many overseas wished they could get their hands on some releases from 'The Criterion Collection' too. I've blind bought a number of foreign classics from them.

Next up on my Bergman films to watch followed by 'Summer With Monika'.

I'm shocked to see no mention of Fellini, Bergman, or Kurosawa.

It's a thread for favorite movies. If it was for best, then I'd have Kurosawa up there.

Got Clockwork Orange and American Psycho as Fav's ?

Who woulda thought, though... that suits your twisted little sick mind..

Although I did like American Psycho myself.. Clockwork Orange? Meh, pointless.
