Seriously, it's really pathetic. He had enough talent to stay in the NBA, and the Spurs wanted him too.

He really bailed and chickened out. Simple as that. When he saw that NBA defenses were far more athletic than his EL opponents, it must have scared him away. Vspan relies on athleticism much more than other simple guards like Calathes or Prigioni. These former EL PGs like to play defense, assist, and shoot open jumpers. That's it, but not so with Spanoulis, who envisions himself as the Tmac of Europe. If you want to play Tmac basketball in the NBA, then this requires a whole lot more talent than Spanoulis is capable of.

The funny thing is if he stayed with the Spurs and worked things out slowly, then who knows how Popovich might have transformed his game? Could he have evolved into a Billups type of player? Who knows? His mental state was to weak for the NBA. Bottom line.

It is also pathetic that the best euro player of all time was sitting on the bench for the first few years in NBA, when he could be dropping 20+ points every game.

Honestly, for him the problem was mainly a combination of the wrong circumstances and the wrong mentality (misplaced pride, refusal to adapt and earn his stripes, etc.). With his attributes and skills he could've been a fine NBA player. Not even close to one of the best, but there was definitely a place for him if he was willing to take it.
