If Jordan didn't come back from retirement again, he would have a career average of 31ppg on over 50% FG. That's godly for a perimeter player.
But now its screwed up because his wizards years dragged his FG% below 50%, so it doesn't seem as incredible.

Yeah. Dropped his ranking to at least the 13th best player ever.:facepalm

You could say that about any player that plays in his late 30s.

who the **** cares, it's not the stats that you judge a player by, it's accomplishments and overall level of play

All MJ cares is legacy. Numbers doesn't really matter to him.

As an applied statistician, one of the most frustrating things to me is when people view continuous data in a non-continuous way.
There is virtually no difference in real terms between 49.9 and 50.1 percent, except on is above an arbitrary benchmark and the other is not.
You can also see this in talks about double/triple-doubles and similar "clubs" nerds on ESPN tout some player as now belonging to or whatever.

yeah i guess it matters to all you number crunching stat whores. but i dont think jordan regrets it. It didnt affect his GOAT status at all, unless of course youre some wannabe elitist who has to nitpick and overvalue fg%

What do his number look like if he doesn't retire in his prime and decide to play baseball?

You're a moron. Dude came back and was still busting asses. Jordan doesn't give a shit about those stats. He and everyone else who watches basketball knows he is the GOAT. Haven't you ever heard the expression "stats are for losers"? Think about that and then think about the purpose this thread serves this board and then get back to us. Thanks.

OP is mad that Jordan didn't finish his career above 50% shooting while MJ couldn't care less and is on a private island with hot models right now.

That's actually sort of funny, because Jordan was VERY mindful of his statistics when he played.

Every player is mindful of their stats at the beginning of their career because they earn their contracts based on those stats. After every game players get stats sheets in the locker room and go over them. Agents are involved in harassing the team over how many shots a player gets etc. I assure you that at the end of his career he was much less concerned with his statistics than at other points in his career and that overall, he doesn't regret coming back. He came back and proved that he still had it and most importantly, it worked for him financially which I'm sure was a motivating factor for him more so than anything else.

Chamberlain, who is of course the greatest of alltime shot well above 50 percent for his career and led the league in field goal percentage 9 times. How many times did "Air" Jordan do that?

Less times than Jordan led his teams to a championship.

Team game. Wilt's teammates shot a truly awful percentage in the playoffs every year except for maybe one year. Wilt was busy shooting 50+% and grabbing 24 rebounds per game while his teammates puked themselves.

It lessened his all time averages, sure. But if anything it was a testamanet to his heart, and competitive fire. Not caring about dips in his stats, but willing to go out to do battle with much younger players in the primes of their career just to prove himself.
With that said he showed flashes of his old self, just without the consistency due to age. His level of play was impressive in context.

It happens, Kobe's 1st few years off the bench ****ed his up too or else he would have 28/6/5 47%

Well yea. MJ decided to come back after 3 years of retirement, out of shape, as an old man in a young man's sport. Incredily difficult to do.
Kobe had his youth, and athleticism but decided it was a smart move to skip college. Un-lucky for him there was an established all star caliber player at his position in front of him, in combo with a coach who didn't like hot shot rookies.
Self made decisions that altered their career numbers a bit. Let's also not forget MJ's 15 game season in '86 on capped MPG, and MJ's 17 game season in '95 working himself back into pro basketball shape on the fly also really effected Jordan's career stats. That's like 4 seasons that warped his already dominant production.

JOrdan did even more for his legacy by kicking ass at old age. Look what Nash is doing in his old age... where's Vince and T-Mac scoring 20 ppg at 38?
