In terms of superbowl halftime shows? Not exactly a lot of competition there. But it was a good performance nonetheless.

I'll even take it a step further since I agree with you (very slim pickings).
One of the top 5 all time.
It's usually some shitty pop act or a tribute to an older group. Bruno is a pop act, but he still ripped it.
The fact that he actually performed LIVE and not rely on lip syncing alone warrants it>>>>>

He's legit live. For my wife's birthday last yr I bought us tickets to see him.. I didn't really know any of his songs and it's been the best concert I've been to. Just the vibe, the audience involvement etc.

The Chilli Peppers were better.
It was an alright performance, better than most Super-Bowls in recent memory, but that's not saying much. I've never been a Bruno fan, but his performances are always better than his songs. It was a poor mans attempt at James Brown. It was better than Beyonce last year. I will never top Prince's performance (PS, he was great on New Girl.)
I don't think it was complete live though, I could be wrong. That first song he performed sounded just live the record.

No shame in that.
I used to think the same, until I was surprised at some of the song he made. They'd play his music all the time and I'd think some of the music being played wasn't bad. Then I found out it was him and I admired and respected his diverse styles. I payed more attention to his work and he's actually very talented.
I take back all of the ignorant comments I made about him.

I was shocked that you could possibly prefer the Chilli Peppers over Mars' performance, but then I looked it up and realized Mars doesn't have any black in him, thus making you a neutral spectator.

Actually, when they announced it was Bruno Mars doing the halftime show I decided to check out one of his concerts. I had never really paid much attention to whether he was some contrived, corporate pop act (which I have a natural proclivity to assume these days) or a reasonably talented chap. I checked out this concert (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKZzmnB-UA) on youtube and was very impressed. So I have no hate for the dude. That said, I thought the halftime show in particular was good, but I wouldn't go so far as great. For me it wasn't some performance I'll remember for a long time.

I guess for me its probably because I don't have any real particular affiliation to his music. If it had been one of my favorite musicians doing the same show but with some of my favorite songs, I'd probably have thought of it as more memorable or spectacular. But whatever. Everyone has different tastes. Some people wanna put everyone in the hall of fame, others are more selective. Just because not everyone is rushing to call this a performance for the ages doesn't make them the mayors of haterville. Im just sayin
Probably my favorite superbowl halftime performance ever. Combine that with the first time Seahawks have ever won, and it is the greatest superbowl ever.

How is this not live?
:confusedshrug: :confusedshrug:
Sure he's using auto tune for correction problems and it's EQd and mixed like crazy (specially possible on a delay) but this is obviously all performed live.
The dude is an old school artist.
He was brought up the old school way, performing at a young age, doing tons of shows live honing his act in different venues.
Is he comparable to MJ, James, Prince or others from the past? :coleman: of course not. But this dude for is great for this era. Once you factor in all facets I don't have a hard time listing him amongst one of the best when you consider how he produces, writes, sings, most of his music unlike some of the greats from the past. So I'd say he's a top 25-30 all time, dude does have some good songs that aren't the run of the mill pop songs.

There was definitely a mix going on, which I guess is preferable for a stadium performance. People have learned from the debacles of The Who and The Stones, although Prince, McCartney, Springsteen, Petty and U2 didn't have the same vocal audio troubles.
The dancing and light show were very polished. I'd give him an A-.
As for RHCP, aging rock stars need to keep their shirts on.

I've seen Bruno Mars live on The Jungle Tour. This looked pretty authentic.
I loved this performance even though I'm not a Bruno Mars fan (My son's favorite singer in case people ask why I went to a concert)
I am comfortable with people saying this was better than the Prince halftime. I don't think people are saying Mars is greater than Prince, I think Mars brought that currentness that inflicted energy to this SB. I was at the bar and I saw oldie biker men bobbing their heads, Something that probably wouldn't have happened during Prince.

The treasure video was a tribute to the Jackson 5, but that performance would have been too cliche. I like this performance a lot and the way he infused his band. Very stylish. In a way maybe these young cats now have a chance to research James Brown based on that performance.

I actually pointed out to my gf that he reminded me of a modern James Brown before he started doing the dance moves. I actually told her he reminded me of a mix between Otis Day and the Knights and James Brown seconds before he started doing Shout, and followed up with some James Brown.

I can't rank them for the same reason. Most of them were mediocre. I don't remember any sounding better than Bruno Mars with me actually enjoying the songs/performance (RHCP was fun even though unnecessary as mentioned above), and Black Eyed Peas were by far the worse. The Justin/Janet one is memorable because of the clothing "mishap," but that is actually 11 Super Bowls ago.

to be fair he isn't a drummer by trade.
He was trying to prove that he's a musician and all around entertainer. He wanted to pay tribute to the old school acts which is why he performed live.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Didn't Bother To Plug In Guitars At The Super Bowl
UPDATE: A rep for the Chili Peppers notified The Huffington Post that Flea had posted a response to the halftime show buzz on the band's website. In his message, Flea admitted the vocals were live, but the bass, drums, and guitar were pre-recorded.
For the actual performance, Josh, Chad, and I were playing along with the pre recorded track so there was no need to plug in our guitars, so we did not. Could we have plugged them in and avoided bumming people out who have expressed disappointment that the instrumental track was pre recorded? Of course easily we could have and this would be a non-issue. We thought it better to not pretend. It seemed like the realest thing to do in the circumstance. It was like making a music video in front of a gazillion people, except with live vocals, and only one chance to rock it. Our only thought was to bring the spirit of who we are to the people.

If you look at the quote I replied to, he acts like Bruno did something above average. The fact is, he did some beginner stuff on the drums and y'all think he's great? He probably practiced for a few weeks, if it wasn't pre-recorded.
Singing isn't something that can be learned. You can hone the skill, but you either have it or you don't. I'm sure if Danny Carey took dancing classes for a month he could pull of some beginner shit too.
I get that Bruno is a great performer (from what I hear) and it's cool that he gets down on the drums, but let's not make it more than it actually was :lol
