I was just watching Behind the Music and I was wondering how big she would be if she was still alive today.
She was like the whole package. She could dance, sing, act, and she was beautiful.
So what do you guys think?

No. Beyonce had Destiny's Child and is married to Jay-Z. Everything she does is huge. She dropped an album with unannounced with no promotion and within a week it had sold a million digital copies. Aaliyah would be big no doubt, but I think more on the level of an Alicia Keys.

Aaliyah was dating Dame Dash at the time of her death and I think they've gotten married had she not died.
Aaliyah had like 2 platinum albums when she was like 17 so I feel like she would've been definitely bigger than Keys and maybe on the same level as Beyonce.

On a Venn diagram she would be at the intersect of Alicia Keys and Nicole Scherzinger.

Well that pic I posted isnt Precious. It's Michelle Obama.
Aaliyah is way more talented (and beautiful) than Beyonce, but in terms of popularity - I think Beyonce would be slightly more appealing and noticeable. Alicia Keys and Aaliyah have always been my two favorite R&B princesses, and Toni Braxton the greatest of all time the queen herself. Beyonce is talented, there's no denying that, but her stardom doesn't equal her raw, God-given skills. Aaliyah however, which she was stunningly beautiful, her actual talent was what made her grandly successful. It's such an unfortunate tragedy she exited the game so early.

Aaliyah was very good lookin, but she never struck me as someone who was a great singer. Correct me if I'm wrong but does she have any songs with great vocals? Beyonce would be bigger because she is more marketable

You're right about Beyonce being more marketable - but you're wrong about Aaliyah not having a voice. Her voice was unique, beautifully soft (not overpowering like Beyonce's) and maintained an essence of innocence it seems; difficult to explain what I mean by that ... just a very pure voice. Untarnished and untainted by the malevolent influences of the music industry.

Aaliyah would have been huger. Beyonce should think Aaliyah for her sudden passing.
Aaliyah was making top charting albums on the billboard charts and was getting into the movies. She was Beyonce before Beyonce basically.
She was also likes more by the urban community. There are a lot of Beyonce haters and when Aaliyah was around, she didn't have to many.
She also made much better music, much much better. Her voice wasn't as strong as Beyonce's be Bey has some weak material.

Aaliyah is way more R&B than Beyonce and especially Rihanna.
As far as music. It's pretty hard as a guy to say you like Beyonce "the artist." It was easy back in the gap as a guy to like Aaliyah.
A song like "One in a Million", and "Back and Forth" we can defend that. But we can't defend "Single Ladies" or "Get Me Bodied" or "Girls Run The World." Even Aaliyah's songs of that nature were better "If Your Girl Only Knew" or "More Than A Woman" we could like those tracks. Can't like a song called "Freakum Dress" or "XO."
I agree that Aaliyah made better music than both of them, but that's not all that goes into being a megastar.

Bruh, Aaliyah was about to blow up when she died. Beyonce didn't become "the" BEYONCE until what 2006, 5 years after Aaliyah had passed.
Wild speculation that she would have developed the broad appeal of Beyonc

Because she went from #18 Pop with "One and a Million" album to #1 Pop with self titled Aaliyah album which was released a few months before her death.
In between that time, she started acting, and doing soundtracks. Her actig is much better than Beyonce who plays the same role in like every movie.

Her album's sales were actually diminishing before her death.
The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 187,000 copies in the week of August 4, 2001.[2] Although it was the highest sales week of Aaliyah's career,[2] it initially sold slower than her previous album One in a Million.[60] Blackground and Virgin, which had invested heavily in the album's performance, wanted a single with a high chart placement to help increase the album's sales.[61] "We Need a Resolution" had been released as the lead single on April 13,[62] but underperformed on radio and only reached number fifty-nine on the Billboard Hot 100.[61]
The album's sales skyrocketed after Aaliyah's death. Before her death, its sales had been diminishing since the album's release in July,[53] and stood at more than 447,000 copies sold.[65] News of her death was reported on the last day of Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week, during which Aaliyah sold 62,000 copies, a 41.5% increase from its past week's sales.[66] The following week, it sold 305,500 copies and ascended from number nineteen to number one on the Billboard 200.[67] It was the album's highest sales week,[68] and marked the first time a recording artist climbed to number one posthumously since John Lennon in 1980 with his album Double Fantasy.
I love Aaliyah too, bruh, but there really is no indication she was on some upswing to becoming a megastar like you suggest. I think your black-centric tastes are clouding your perception. She was moving her music in a more Neo-soul direction and didn't look to change her whispering waif style, which wouldn't have led to the type of megastar status you see with Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Beyonc

Her album's sales were actually diminishing before her death.
Also I think Queen of the Damned was going to go straight to DVD before her death. It is hardly indicative of someone who was on the verge of being one of the biggest stars in the world. Her death is what got it to theatrical release.

Timbaland turned Aaliyah into a superstar. All of her most popular tracks are Timbaland; "Are You That Somebody", "If Your Girl Only Knew", "One In A Million", "Try Again", "More Than A Woman"... pretty much every hit track was produced by Timbaland.
I liked Aaliyah and her cool, laid back sound... but that sound was courtesy of Timbaland. Like I said earlier, Aaliyah was hitting superstar status, but the question was whether or not she could have exceeded Beyonce's success... and I find that highly unlikely.

As to the question in the thread title, I would say no because Beyonce is in that Britney level. She completely destroyed Ashanti, Ciara, and every black female pop artist of the past 12 years in terms of her success.
that is incorrect. rihanna has far more record sales & no.1s

I wonder what style of music Aaliyah would be producing if she was still alive. Bey and Rhianna's music appeal across racial demographics, if Aaliyah kept producing music that mainly appealed to her own race it's not likely she'd have been as big unless she got pretty big in movies too.
Having said that, I liked her more than Bey and Rhianna but that's not the main question posed. Overall, I liked that time period of early 2000's for R&B and Hip-hop music much more than today.

She would be irrelevant right now like 90% of r&b singers who had their time but faded. Her death made her famous. Janet Jackson, Cher ( nominated for an oscar), Barbara Streisand, etc were all in movies too, quit acting like Aaliyah did anything groundbreaking.
Beyonce is a once in a generation talent with GREAT management. And in her prime was the hottest girl in top 40 music. lol @ anyone thinking Beyonce is where she is because Aaliyah isn't around.

Beyonce is just on another level IMO.. She has a much bigger stage presence and personality.. this wouldn't have been close. Aaliyah is the quiet silent type and would've fizzled later on.
The gap between Kelly Rowland and Aaliyah is closer than Aaliyah is to Beyonce.

10000000000000000% sure she would've been bigger! There is so much to it but I won't even waste my time.
Props to OP for mentioning her name.
FYI her last album kicked down the door of genres forever and it laid down the blueprint for what R&B albums would sound like for the next decade and beyond. That is indisputable. She uses Rock, Arabic, Latin, Electro, Jazz Classical etc. elements on it, mixed with a little old school R&B, and then something sprinkled on top that is unknown. Very few R&B artists had stepped outside these boundaries up to this point. The album actually has a theme and isn't commercial at all. She put her craft before sales, so all of you who say Beyonce are clearly bubble gum poppy commercial fakkits.
The incredible song writing makes this album one of the few contemporary R&B recordings that is actually close to being a genuine album rather than a format to showcase singles. This is proof Aaliyah was now doing for her genre what people like Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Patrice Rushen and Prince had done in past decades.
The fluidity of that album is unmatched...very similar to the "One in a MIllion" album.
Do people even know she was signed to do the last two Matrix movies...even taped some scenes for the second one. She was signed to do the movie "Honey" before Jessica Alba. It's been said she was signed to a total of 8 movies. Go watch her crying scene in Romeo Must Die...one of my favourite acting scenes all-time.
Simple and plain, there are 20+ Aaliyah songs, that individually blow Beyonce's entire catalogue away. It's clear as night and day.
All her collaborations with all those legendary rappers are untouchable.
Her second album could be one of the best albums all-time. Timbaland's best work to this day. She put Timbaland on the map, remember that. She was the established one. The sound of that album still sounds relevant today and it was like nothing anybody had heard at the time, just like her third album.
Her songs would get played at the hottest nightclubs in NY amongst the rawest HIP HOP.
Do I need to touch on her dancing/choreography that was one of the best all-time, every single video?
Her voice? As smooth and silk as honey. Still my favourite falsetto.
I'll take Aaliyah's b-sides, work on other peoples' albums, soundtrack work and unreleased tracks over Beyonce entire discography.
I could be here all day and really dropped something more coherent but I just had to add my two cents.
