View Full Version : Why haven't the Orlando Magic retired any of their former players numbers?

Don't quite get that. I understand they've had some players who haven't left town on the best of terms, but still:

Shaq only spent 4 seasons there but he put that franchise on the map. Nobody was checking for the Magic before he got there.

For all the flack Dwight gets, he spent 8 years there & was the cornerstone in turning the franchise around. Franchise leader in points, rebounds & blocked shots. Once he retires..

T-Mac carried those teams to the playoffs (though they didn't advance) with not much help & was one of the biggest stars in the game while doing so.

C'mon they could've at least retired Penny's. Probably the most beloved of the 4 now and he took the Magic to another level once he arrived in '93.

Shaq/Penny/Mac should all be in the rafters.

Hell even Nick Anderson and D3 deserve it. If Bruce Bowen and Avery Johnson have their jerseys retired ...

Because nobody deserves it.
DH did nothing but one finals
Shaq did nothing but one finals
Penny did nothing but one finals.
You can't hang those players up in the rafters, just because it's a big name

Usually that's reserved for a players who's been with the team along time

Isn't Jameer Nelson the longest tenured player at 9 years?

SO only players who win championships should get their jerseys retired?

Let's take down Ewing, Barkley, Stockton and Malone, Reggie Miller, Nique Wilkins, Chris Webber, Elgin Baylor, George Gervin, Alex English, Calvin Murphy, ects jerseys because they don't deserve it.

Can't wait till we see Derek Fisher, Tony Allen, Jason Terry, Mario Chalmers, Luc Longley's jersey hanging in the rafter where they belong.

Jameer might be our first retirement, but he might be traded so who knows. No one else deserves it. Dwight and Shaq left on bad terms and Penny wasn't here that long.

Sure this is true but the Magic don't have the clout that teams like the Celtics, Lakers or a team like the Sixers have. Those 4 players are the biggest reasons why the Magic have been relevant at some point, even if they didn't play there a long time. Though I usually understand why people use that criteria for other teams.

Barkley played in Phoenix 4 seasons.
Jeff Hornacek played in Utah 5 seasons.

If they do this it'll be interesting to see how they handle Penny & T-Mac, probably give them the versions of the jerseys those 2 wore.

How long did track play in Orl??? I don't think it was more than 3 years.

Penny and Shaq deserve it though despite short tenures. Orl was an elite team for a few years cus of them.

I feel like comparing these players to the players in question is like comparing apples and oranges.

DH-Played around 5 or 6 right? Went to the finals and lost 4-1, not to mention all the terrible publicity he went through with Orlando trying to leave

Shaq- Played for the team for 4 years and was swept in the finals only to leave for LA

Penny- Played about 6 and was really hurt for 1 or 2 of those seasons

Tmac- Played for 4 years where he never made it out of the 1st round despite winning some scoring titles while there

then you have players that, sure didn't win a championship but..

Ewing-Played 15 years in a Knicks Uni where he was named to 10 or 11 all star games in that uniform . They also went to Multiple conference finals and an NBA finals

R. Miller- He played his entire 17 or 18 year career in one town , an all star, eastern finals and nba finals, had some amazing games, and gave Indiana fans some cray memories during his tenure. ...

I mean i could go on and on with the players, but i feel i would get a bit redundant.. Im just saying i dont think people like Penny, Shaq, or Dwights careers in Orlando can be compared to people like Pats , Reggie, Nique, ect Where they have gotten there number hung in the rafters...
I mean i dont know just my opinion :confusedshrug:

Yeah this is pretty spot on. It's not just about chips, Orlando haven't had anybody who met any of the criteria to have their jerseys retired, and the one, maybe two guys who did left on bad terms.

I mean look, I don't live in Orlando, never even been there so I could be wrong :confusedshrug: but I don't think it's a stretch to say that there's people in that area that are still rocking Penny & Shaq's retro shoes and wearing throwback Penny, Shaq & T-Mac's jerseys.

Sure they weren't there long, but again they were some of the biggest stars in the game during their time in Orlando.

Even if he gets traded later in his career he probably still will be, he's done a lot for us.

Grudges have to be let go if someone of a superstar caliber did a lot of good for your franchise.

Because you're not a fan, you wouldn't understand what Jameer has done for the Magic, it doesn't matter who YOU think about when you think about the Magic :confusedshrug: It isn't always the big name players that define your franchise, some of us aren't lucky enough the have the Birds, the Russels, and the Pierces.

Jameer has been our point Guard for as long as I've been living here, I don't care if he's not a star, I'd hang Nelson's Jersey over Howards any day, and it probably will get hung once he's done here.

Why is this? Carter's apologized and said he would be honored to have his jersey retired there. Is there some sort of news story I'm missing or do you think Toronto just won't get over their selves enough to do it? Or option C, do you think he didn't do enough for the franchise? Which I would argue he definitely did, there's a reason the furthest the Raptors ever got was with him as their number one guy.

Would be incredibly petty if they never did.

Orlando Sentinel did a public poll for something relating this and Anderson won.

And that was only the 2nd round. Carter didn't play long enough nor was he part of any great teams with Toronto. There is no reason to retire his # with the Raptors. Just because he's been the best player so far in this very short history of the franchise doesn't mean you retire the number.

This honour should be saved for great players, who played most of their career with the team and were part of truly great teams. The Raptors have had no one that fits that description so far.

I grew up and spent most my life in Canada and the fanfare around Carter when he was there was unprecedented. He was one of the most exciting, if not the most exciting player of all-time. He played 6 and a half seasons there and put up prime stats of 27.5/5.5/4, he put up 27/6.5/5 in the playoffs for the Raps (15 games) and they were a shot away from the ECF.

That's a great player imo. You can't only retire players from "truly great teams", you need to retire the players that were faces of your franchise and performed well under that role. He deserves it in my opinion but I suppose we just have different philosophies on what does or doesn't deserve a jersey in the rafters.
