I could post scenes from 2001 all day in this thread. Instead I'll limit it to these 3:

That scene in the new Hobbit with the mountain and the sunset with the orcs on the wolves riding along the mountains. Yeah.

I like shadows, I like long shots, I like framing, and I like a trailing shots.
The Third Man is my favorite pre 60s movie not from Hitchcock.

This one is my desktop at home. A little obscure and a newer movie.

And just a few from one of the best looking modern flicks of recent years. And the opening scene in particular, but many of the long shots in this were incredible on their own.

I'd also like to mention Scorcese's trail shots. Particularly of Pesci heading into the resturant in Goodfellas, but it's more a sequence than a particular image. And there's a handfull of directors that seem to have fetishes for certain types of shots these days.

I wanted to mention Leave the Gun and Take the Canolli, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, especially the first scene train robbery, but I'm having technical issues. Check them out.

this is the crazy f*cking shot from Children of Men.
Four minutes, no cuts, all handheld.
The operator and focus puller both kill it.
Amazing shit really, can't imagine how long they had to rehearse that.
The frame composition throughout. Legendary.

Opening Crane Shot From 'Touch of Evil' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg8MqjoFvy4)
^That must've taken forever to plan and execute. The timing by everyone involved had to be damn near perfect.
