Countries i've been to: Britain, France, Canada, Mexico, India, China, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Tunisia, Germany, Poland, Czech Rep., Croatia, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands and perhaps a couple others i can't remember.

I also speak reasonable Polish and can understand it when spoken.

The reason people don't learn another language in this country has nothing to do with the disposition of Americans, it is a failure of the education system, that assumes languages are unimportant because English is the international language (it is the same in the UK). If you are going to make people bilingual, it should be done at a young age, and it isn't particularly hard, but we don't even try.

It is a disgrace really considering even a pretty poor country like Tunisia can have 95% of its citizens speaking 2 languages fluently (Arabic and French).

And there are plenty of useful things to learn besides a second language for no reason because you can already communicate with everyone because everyone speaks english.
...but that's exactly what is implied (I took it as no one needs to learn another language because everyone here should know it, apologies if I'm wrong) because in many cases it can be very helpful if you can learn another language unless you live in the mid-west. Agreed that most probably do it so they can thumb your nose at you, but there are obviously practical reasons for learning other languages.

Not to mention, it really opens up your mind if you can master another language because it trains your brain to learn in different ways.
