View Full Version : Slavery in the US was not abolished in 1861
http://schalkenbach.org/library/henry-george/social-problems/sp15.html
We have abolished negro slavery in the United States. But how small is the real benefit to the slave. George M. Jackson writes me from St. Louis, under date of August 15, 1883:
"During the war I served in a Kentucky regiment in the Federal army. When the war broke out, my father owned sixty slaves. I had not been back to my old Kentucky home for years until a short time ago, when I was met by one of my father's old negroes, who said to me: "Mas George, you say you sot us free; but 'fore God, I'm wus off than when I belonged to your father." The planters, on the other hand, are contented with the change. They say: "How foolish it was in us to go to war for slavery. We get labor cheaper now than when we owned the slaves." How do they get it cheaper? Why, in the shape of rents they take more of the labor of the negro than they could under slavery, for then they were compelled to return him sufficient food, clothing and medical attendance to keep him well, and were compelled by conscience and public opinion, as well as by law, to keep him when he could no longer work. Now their interest and responsibility cease when they have got all the work out of him they can."
It's a clear piece of history that slavery in the US was abolished in name only in 1861. A large amount of former slaves still had to endure slave like conditions because most of the good land was taken and thus their bargaining power was very, very little which forced them to work in bad circumstances, often for "former" slave plantation owners.
This explains why: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_rent
That mechanism which caused the de facto enslavement of "former" slaves is still at play today in the economy, though the effect is somewhat diluted by government intervention.

The emancipation proclamation explicitly didn't apply to the northern states anyway. Surely you knew this?
De Tocqueville actually observed that the plight of 'the negro' was far worse in the northern states that had abolished slavery than in the southern slave states. Northerners on average were just as racist as southerners, but they simply didn't have much to lose from abolishing slavery like the south did.

Welcome to 6th grade American history.
Welcome to 6th grade American history.
You've completely missed the point of the post and probably didn't even read the OP and just knee jerk responded to the thread title. Plus, I'm pretty sure they don't teach about the law of rent in middle school.
Oh, and secondary education in the US is a complete joke anyways. I went for a few months and decided to just not waste my time with it any more. I spent half the time teaching English to native English speaking students. It was a "reputable" High School in an affluent area too.

It wasn't abolished in Mississippi until like 10 years ago
Do people truly enjoy getting bent over and ****ed in the ass by privileged, wealthy, parasitic landowners that much? Even most people who own land are still net victims of the system, because they don't own enough land by value to make up for what's being stolen from them by the really, really privileged, wealthy parasitic landowners.

Honestly, I think you should shut the fcuk up...
Honestly, I think you should shut the fcuk up...
You remind me of Samuel L Jackson in Django.
Can't people see that landowning is the prevalent method of how privileged, wealthy parasites rob the productive?

I trolled him about Global Warming, which seems to be his hobby horse. The subject of landowning and how to make the economy more just is somewhat of a hobby horse of mine, so I'm not going to hold it too much against him if he decides to troll me back. :lol
and what do people around you say that you remind them of, just out of curiosity?
An abolitionist who fights rent seeking, landowning being the most abundant thereof. I stand for economic freedom, justice, and prosperity.

I know, when someone posts different on his views about it he come in the thread all ho-hum about the subject basically putting the person down about the subject. And while it might be fine and dandy that's he's just speaking his mind and being blunt calling people idiots and dumbasses, it just shows that...well...bluntly he's a know-it-all smug asshole.
Jesus cry me a river. A thread on ISH about climate change is full of idiots who don't have views, they have misinformation, but I usually spend my time dealing in facts and writing long posts filled with examples to help explain some of the finer points.
Anyway, I'd rather be a smug asshole than a self-righteous d-bag who turned out to just be another cheating scumbag.

You obviously don't know the OP and his M.O. if you think he's really whining about slavery. He complains about private land ownership and the practice of charging rent. Constantly.
Unless you're agreeing that land ownership is a form of slavery, in which case you're as dumb as he is.

this is what you two nerds look like to everyone else in this thread
Wait, I'm confused, I thought slaves were freed, given the right to vote, and segregation was eliminated all at once when Obama was elected. Now I'm really confused.
