Bulls vs. Lakers at 3:30? No Kobe, no Rose, no Gasol (I think), even Deng has been traded. Noah/Blake showcase? Good luck with that. Flex scheduling is long overdue.

Don't they only have a limited number though? I don't really know, I'm just trying to find a reason why they don't switch games more often. It's not great for anyone when less people watch.

Is ABC going to complain if the NBA decides to switch to a game people want to watch? I don't know the details of their deal but no network is going to complain when you improve ratings. When the foot ball season ends the NBA has the opportunity to seize ratings, that's why they don't broadcast Sunday games until February. This will be the intro to the NBA season for many. This game is absolutely not what you want to show casual fans.

Flex scheduling is easy for the NFL. There's atleast one big game every sunday.

How are you going to flexing the schedule if the game is at 3pm. They should flex the tnt and espn games not the abc games

Adjusting the schedule wouldn't be hard at all, especially in this case. They knew Rose and Bryant were out weeks ago, if not months. You guys think NBA owners would not allow the league to move one of their games to be moved? Not only is it for the good of the league but the teams permitting their game to be moved get more TV exposure. The only possible issues are with other events possibly scheduled at the venue and travel. But with 30 teams there are plenty of games to choose from.

It's not easy to shift TV scheduling. You really need games being played at the same time. You can't shift a 1 PM game for a 6 PM game. Also, CBS can't take a game that its rivals are airing on their local channels.

The NBA cannot pass the NFL in popularity in our lifetime. That's impossible right now.
I do like Adam Silver's confidence and enthusiasm though.
Getting to about half the NFL's popularity in a couple decades could be a reasonable goal though. And to that something drastic needs to change...like shortening the regular season drastically and changing the amount of teams that make the playoffs.

Shrinking the season makes the NBA less money with no guarantee of a popularity increase. There are tweaks that can help but the real reason why football is more popular is just nature of the respective games. A football game is an event we get once a week with this violent, tough sport where it's almost like you're going to war with the town sending the opposing team. Basketball will never be like that.

Yes football has the enthusiasm for violence and stuff, and the easy-to-follow format where your team only plays once a week on Sunday, but basketball has things going for it too...
...like the fact that it's the most played sport in the country, is pretty accessible for a novice fan (there's really not that many confusing rules in it), and it has a super-star/celebrity factor that football can't have with 51 players to each football team.

Because these stations have obligations to the other programs they air. They can't just say oh sorry we're taking you off the air so we can get a point more in ratings for this basketball game. The station is not a servant to the NBA.

What about just rescheduling games ahead of times. Making for more compelling matchups. Like give the network 2 weeks warning. Eg. Bulls and lakers suck a lot more than we projected preseason. move around the schedule a little and put a better game there. The network was going to broadcast an nba game anyways. WHy would they object to a better game?

My only assumption is that the local TV networks have priority or something. They get those games and the money that comes with it, and just because another game turns out to be bad due to injuries, they can't get screwed out of that. It's not as simple as people make it out to be, TV business is quite competitive and complicated.

How does the NFL manage to do it?
Arent they screwing over a local TV network?
The NFL always flexs to the best game and puts it on Sunday night in prime time.
Maybe that game was supposed to be on a local network during the day. The NFL doesnt care, it wants the best games to be seen.
Also injuries are an argument for flexing. Of course the nba should flex out of kobe-less lakers vs a rose-less bulls just like the NFL should flex out of a peyton-less broncos vs a brady-less pats

I shouldn't have to explain the difference in power between these two leagues. Any channel that broadcasts football usually has that whole day blocked out anyway.
Also, as far as I know they only trade games in the same time slot which is much much easier. Could be wrong though. Every NFL game makes insane amounts of money no matter who plays also, that's why the get away with horrific Thursday night games, people will watch anyway.

This reply makes no sense. I am suggesting that the NBA should have replaced the next ABC game with another NBA game. That has no effect on the rest of the TV line-up.
And on a side note, tv stations pay for the right to air shows. They can preempt a program they were scheduled to show if they want to and do so all the time.

Programming would get messed up if they traded it for a game starting a different time, unless they changed times for the game which I don't know if you can do, fans could get mad IDK. If it were easy and profitable I assure you the NBA would do it, I'm just speculating as to why they aren't.

Thats exactly what the NFL does. It takes a game that starts at 1 pm and moves it to 8 pm in prime time

You are wrong, the NFL only plays 1 game on sunday night at 8 pm.
most NFL games have 1pm or 4pm start time. They move the times of the games. The will move a bad game out of the prime time sunday night spot and a good/relevant to the playoff chase game into it.
I am stating that the NBA should be willing to reschedule games to ensure good matchups are spotlighted and bad ones are taken off prime time. Like the NFL does

Any NFL stadium is mostly used for football only, so if the league wants the game to be played at 8PM, the stadium can cooperate.
As for the NBA arenas, they are shared with NHL in some cities, so if NBA wants a 5PM game to be played at 12PM, the arena may say that there is a hockey game at that time slot.
Flex scheduling may work only if all arenas are used by NBA only.

First of all, the NBA is and has been a bigger sport internationally than the NFL..
But if he actually believes the NBA will ever surpass the NFL in this country then he needs to be drug tested immediately and it's likely that he's Rob Ford's number one hook up, because if he actually believes that will ever happen he's completely off his rocker. That will never happen. His job is to just be better than baseball in this country. The NFL is king.
If he does want to leave a legacy want to leave a legacy worth talking about.. get rid of flopping and return the game back to the way it was in the 80s and early 90s. Stop fining players for flopping, because they don't give a crap about that.. they have plenty of money.
Flopping.
1st offense on obvious flops.. 10 game suspension
and then add a additional 5 games on that initial penalty for each egregious flop afterwards. Getting that out of the game is the only way he ever stands a chance of this game approaching the NFL.

There's a reason why fans boo and are making youtube videos about "lebroning" The fans HATE flopping. eliminate it from the game, give the customer what they want, and the game becomes more popular.

I agree that the NBA needs much more than flex scheduling to be a lot better. I wouldn't go to such extremes on flopping though. The fines definitely need to be increased 10x because $5000 isn't shit to these players. I think the first offense should be the kind of fine that hits hard...somewhere between $50,000 - $100,000. Any offenses after that is a 1 game suspension with no pay and that includes the playoffs of course.
Also, deep six ABC/ESPN after the 2015-16 season. I'm not sure what shape NBC will be in by then but hopefully they can take the rights back again. The overall NBA presentation has suffered since ABC/ESPN took over.
