...why The Shawshank Redemption is so highly praised?

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad film by any means...by nearly 60% of IMDB users have rated it a 10/10.

It's a 10/10 for me. All personal preference though, obviously with movies everyone takes away their own feelings about it.

I suspect it is due to the broad appeal of the movie.

Sure there are better movies, but since the scale is 1-10 it ends up being distorted.

I rated it 10.

Is it better than some other movies that I also ranked 10... probably not.

Does it deserve a 9? No.

Does it have wider appeal than something like The Godfather or Pulp Fiction? Absolutely, hence it ends up higher ranked on IMDB.

Because people have poor judgement.

7.8/10.

Cut 20mins and reduce Morgan Freeman's lines and i'll bump it up to a 9/10
