View Full Version : LeBron James puts on dunk display after practice in Phoenix

The Miami Heat practiced in Phoenix Monday in preparation for a matchup with the Suns Tuesday, and after they were done it was time for the LeBron James show.
Tickets were not required.

The 10-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA team member, four-time league MVP, two-time NBA champion and three-time Olympic gold medalist threw down one impressive dunk after another, much to the delight of all who were in attendance.

Of course, it took some prodding from Heat coach Erik Spoelstra to get the attention on King James' dunkathon.

"Well you guys are missing a show, are you sure you want to interview me while this is going on," he asked.

Point taken.

"We had a great practice," James said when asked what prompted him to do it. "It just felt good."

He does this every year. He's not capable of doing any dunk I haven't seen before... so I don't care if he enters the dunk contest or not.

Too bad he's a pansy ass bitch.

All of those dunks were wack. It's a good thing he doesn't enter if that is even close to what he'd attempt. I'm still salty about that year where he punked out and then did better dunks during the all-star game than anything we saw in the contest.

Yeah, those dunks are essentially what we see him do in games. They are no more impressive than what we have already seen. He once indicated that he has no creativity to his dunks, and just does what feels natural once in the air. He tries to get creative on the throw, but upon catching a lob, it is just what is an easy way to make sure it goes in.

I wish he join in the NBA dunk contest. he can just do a basic between the legs dunk, or a super windmill, and all of the judges would give him 50 points.

smaller dunkers looks aesthetially pleasing than taller dunkers. that's why spud webb beat wilkins in 1985, and nate robinson beat green and howard in 2010.

In fairness to Lebron he had far better in game dunks this year compared to his first 3 seasons in Miami.

I think LeBron James has put on much better "practice" shows than this (I'm thinking Clippers pre-game when he was wearing those orange and blue Cavaliers retros, with the clockwise 360 and between the legs). But in the most recent video, yeah, there wasn't a lot happening in terms of the dunks, largely just one hand tomahawks coming from various angles (bounce, throw, etc.).

Just saw this 1990 old school article. Even back in the day they criticized the dunk contest.

Wilkins Wins It With the Same Old Stuff : Slam-dunk contest: Dominique beats Kenny Smith, but no one seems to care anymore.

http://articles.latimes.com/1990-02-11/sports/sp-1106_1_kenny-smithThis is true. History has given Dominique Wilkins a pass in this regard. The article's not loading for me, so I apologize if I repeat what it already said.

As it was, Dominique didn't even plan on entering in 1990 until his endorsing shoe company offered him a handsome pile of cash to make an appearance. Wilkins was, in fact, repeating and finishing with safe dunks by the time the final round came about. When he finally emerged victorious (over a much more creative Kenny Smith), there was more than a smattering of boos.

My feeling was '90 was somehow history's way (or the judge's) of making up for Wilkins' loss in '88, where 'Nique received his lowest score of the night (by two points) on arguably his best and last dunk, conveniently leaving the door open for Michael Jordan to step in and repeat a dunk he'd already completed that night, after missing his first attempt even.

The one thing that could be said in Wilkins' defense in 1990 was that it was his fifth dunk contest appearance over a seven contest span. And back then, there were more rounds and more dunks. Wilkins completed a whopping 35 contest dunks. So, at that point, a little bit of familiarity and repetition seems inevitable. Still, I believe Kenny Smith should have been the champion in '90.

The raw power and speed behind the dunks was nice, but if anything, this showed why he's so hesitant to enter the dunk contest. Some players are contest dunkers, some players are in-game dunkers, some are both. MJ was both. VC was both. Kobe won the dunk contest, but was really more of an in-game dunker. Lebron is an in-game dunker. It's nothing to be ashamed of, they're just different styles.

That's what you call dunking? Please, if it weren't for the passes the dunks he did would be rated a -3/10. The passes were the only thing that made his rating a 2/10.

Great height on the vertical in some of those, the power is palpable on his dunks. But that's only been the thing that excites when it comes to LeBron's aerial assaults. He lacks creativity, and flexible body dexterity to be an artistic, aesthetically pleasing dunker.

It's funny how he has to throw the ball off the wall in order to make it seem more creative than it really is. If you purely look at the dunks, they are just the regular reverse and tomahawk he does in-game. Lebron would stand no chance in a dunk contest.

It's also no coincidence that Lebron staged this now, after Paul George, Wall and Lillard are suiting up for the Dunk Contest. He just can't stand that other people are taking the attention. Just like when he had to moan about not having the same opportunities as Durant when Durant was going off in January.

Lebron is just one big attention whore at this point.

I wish he entered the dunk contest as a hungry young gun when he was 22-25 years old.

Now that he's an established MVP superstar and future legend and at 29 years old, I'm not sure we would see the best LeBron James for a dunk contest.

I agree that Lebron is not very creative, or at least has not shown it yet, with his dunks. But he would win, just because it's him.

That being said, what I like most about his dunks, and his game in general, is how EASY he makes it look. Lebron makes dunking look so easy that I could do it like him. Love that about him.
