Do not oppose gays at all.

But people are talking about educating players and changing the way they talk in locker rooms? Just heard this spewed on sportscenter past day or two. Like lets think about this for a second. if anyones been in a locker room after a game or w/e knows that men are men. They will throw words around like nothing. homo slurs are among them, anything to embrace our manhood (talking about women, etc).

like idk how this kid is gonna do after he gets drafted, but I think itll be a distraction for alot of people. Like how do you treat someone equally when you feel they will get offended because of something you might say?

Why did he even announce his sexuality? I don't go around saying I am straight?

apparently he is also a role model now

wonder if this is also exposed to kids who are not yet ready to learn about this stuff. Do people not realize it takes a guy and girl to reproduce

I just don't see how sexuality comes into it...annoying they bring it up.

i was thinking about what a sport could do to not have the gay player turn into a distraction, and my silly / unrealistic conclusion is to have a like 30 gay players enter at once. What i mean is the only way for people to get used to something is when it isn't rare, so if every team had 1 , 2 or even 3 then it just becomes the norm

A majority of scouts were asking about his sexuality before his abilities as a football player. When they met with people he knew, there was still a lot of inappropriate questions as they were trying to dig up whether he was gay or not. He figured he would announce it rather than continuing to deal with scouts investigating his sexuality as if he were some sort of spy.

Once this is familiar, the next big thing will be 2 athletes in the same sport being a couple.

Why are the scouts even asking? If he can play football than cool

I don't know, but they made it a big deal before he did, yet there are bunch of people mad that he "made an announcement" and is "making a big deal about being gay."

Because sports teams are historically homophobic... not to mention the areas where fanbases for some NFL teams are extremely anti-gay... did you really need to ask?

If he doesn't say anything, nobody will know? If he plays football he can't be that feminine

I think these things can definitely be taken WAYYYY to far. Take Royce White for instance. Anxiety disorders are totally an important thing to become aware of and can truly affect a player and players around him/her. However, Royce turns it into the ONLY thing that he talks about in the media. This will get you blackballed from many leagues. It's not because you have an anxiety disorder or are gay, it's that you're being a douche about it and creating a distraction when there shouldn't be one and not following chain of command. If there is a problem, handle it behind closed doors. If you have a problem with a co-worker at work, you don't stand up and yell THEY AREN'T DOING THEIR WORK! I SAW THEM!!

Btw, I'm not saying Sam is as bad as White because clearly the media were the ones that really blew this up. BUT, he can certainly take steps to contain this situation. If he doesn't, he IS just as bad as White as stated in the reasons above.

Side note: LOL @ the media calling him the 1st gay professional athlete (who didn't announce it in retirement) in the major US sports. Didn't Collins just come out last year or the year before when he was still in the league? Fckin media always trying to undermine the NBA

:facepalm

This is nothing like White. White is no longer in the NBA because he didn't care to make an effort to play. I suspect this Sam kid wants to play.

Well said. But we haven't seen how Sam will deal with it in a long run yet. He could be like Royce or he could handle it a lot better. Also, in order to bring the wall down somebody has to shout it out loud anyway.

BTW, Robbie Rogers is technically the first active openly gay athlete in North American pro sports. It is MLS BTW so you may not count it as "major", but that's not the point.

Hmmm that's interesting about Robbie Rogers. Didn't know

As for Sam, I agree about the bringing down the wall and he seems like a good kid in the small amount of clips I've seen him in. I know he has said he wants to be a role model...let's hope he acts like one. I remember Royce saying the same thing for raising mental health awareness.

This is a big, important deal for all of NFL fandom to know that this dude is a pillowbiter (no phobo) for the entirety of his career so the coverage is justifiable.

But yes, this story has already been beaten into my brain on multiple tv channels and you best believe the closer draft activities like the combine and such come about, a 4-5th round prospect will garner the attention of a star prospect.

I'm glad the man is blazing new trails and not hiding a big part of himself to employers who will pay his salary but this has gotten its due attention imo.

Let it go away until he is actually selected by a team on draft day.

Listen. Relative to the older generations, the youngins do not give a **** about differences in sexual orientations, race, religion, etc. As the older players head out in the coming years, what's considered the "norm" today in pro sports locker rooms will be much tamer. This kind of stuff will not even be an issue anymore in 5-10 years.

For those weary of the news coverage, I'd recommend the consideration of unplugging a little bit. I dropped my cable subscription years ago and it's been at least somewhat satisfying to catch wind of a particularly newstory (ex: Tim Tebow) and know I'm not being punched in the face with it because I'm no longer habitually tuning into ESPN every day.

In this case, I read a paragraph on Michael Sam, then that's been the last piece of media I've seen on him. I can only imagine how this is being handled by outlets (not to mention the Marcus Smart and Richard Sherman stories).

Like how do you treat someone equally when you feel they will get offended because of something you might say?

Let's say it's 1947. You're on the Brooklyn Dodgers and you're white.

Jackie Robinson has just joined the team.

Similiar situation or not? Do the arguments hold up?

A gay man still a man, he would be lying if he said he didn't get horny from seeing naked guys in the locker room.

The fact he doesn't act on his desires should be enough for his teammates to accept him as a professional.

Hmmm, seems like the first 5 posters must be 17?

Can't understand why it's in the news for 48 hours? Can't understand why it's a big deal? Can't understand why NFL teams would want to know or would find out? Can't understand why NFL locker rooms are rightfully coming under the same scrutiny every other workplace has? Can't understand why this is more important than a MLS, WNBA, or retiring NBA player?

I actually agree with this. probably one of the reasons why sam's college team accepted him so well. And probably why he will experience resistance in the NFL

Strong correlation between youth and acceptance of gays.

Why are people posting that he should have just kept it hidden and there's no reason to come out except for fame?

Do they not realise how living a false life can really get to a person? If you woke up tomorrow and suddenly you had to hide being straight from every person you knew and had to pretend to like dudes would you be happy with that life?

Also in this day and age haven't we gotten past the need to throw around insults that are insensitive? Like others said this is similar to having african americans in the locker rooms and the effect that would have had.

I'm also sure Michael Sam is going to have a thick understanding skin and won't be going off at people who do slip up and throw out an insensitive insult, it won't be as if he will run to the media every time someone says something he has likely learned how to live in a society that uses these words carelessly his whole life.
