How can Sam(openly gay football player) shower with 50 men and not look? Wouldn't he be aroused on some level?
I would feel uncomfortable showering and getting dressed in the locker room if I was Sam's teammate. I don't want some dude looking at me lustfully when I'm naked.

I am sure there are dudes already lusting for you without your knowledge.

It changes when you're openly gay. Sexual attraction is the reason why men and women are separated from each other in bathrooms and locker rooms. If it wasn't an issue... we could just make everything unisex.

Why do american sports seem to encourage players to wash together in the first place? In all my years playing sports (and I've been in AFL locker rooms) they always had showers in separate stalls, sure some people might walk around with nothing on but it wouldn't be hard to just put a towel on when you get it if your worried.

You're ignorant. The gay male thought process is more like a woman's than a man's. They don't lust after every piece of ass like hetero men do. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but that does not mean they are all the same. You would probably know this if you ever got to know someone that is gay, but something tells me based on your ignorance that that has never happened and likely never will.

I'm sure professional sports teams have individual showers. Personally I don't want any man looking my ****, regardless of sexual orientation, nor do I wanna see theirs.
As far as unwanted sexual attention... I don't give a ****, I've had women (and men) whose attention I did not want come on to me, and there is no difference in my opinion.

lol. You're actually the ignorant one. Gay male culture pushes to have the most sexual partners out of any group. Clearly you don't know any gay men or maybe only know the exceptions. All the gay men I know except 1 have had multiple multiple multiple partners and many while they were in a "committed" relationship. Sex is looked at as something very different to most gay men. Not to mention, from what I've seen, their relationships burn very fast. To say their thought process is more like a womans...is just the definition of ignorance. THEY ARE HORNY MEN. Could you imagine the insane chaos that would happen if women gave it up as easily as men? It would literally be insane amounts of sex or at least physical contact. This is the life of a gay man.
To answer the topic, most gay men know their boundaries and are respectful of others. They know what it's like to feel uncomfortable or judged. I doubt there would ever be any problems in the locker room. That said, I wouldn't be comfortable showering right next to a gay dude. Then again, I'm not comfortable showering right next to any dude.

Who cares if he is aroused? How would you feel about a woman watching 50 men shower naked? You wouldn't care right? It's because of your own desires and insecurities that you would raise such a maligned question.
You're also forgetting the rules of attraction, and some basic common sense.
- Just like how all women find you repulsive, all gay men also find you repulsive.
- Gay men are usually not attracted to inbred republican types
Do you think it's like a Roman bath and everyone showers at the same time in one giant room?

This. There are studies showing that heterosexual males have a tendency to be less sexually aroused by men on men action than homophobes.

lol some of you are thinking of this wrong. Lets make a comparison...
You = (most likely) straight
Sam = Gay
You = Attracted and aroused by women
Sam = Attracted and aroused by men
So how would you feel if you were in a shower with 30 young in shape women who were showering naked? Would you not agree that this dude would feel a similar way? Dude has probably been jerkin it to his college team mates since he couldnt really satisfy himself any other way with the whole keeping it a secret and stuff.
P.S. I am not hating on the guy and I wish him the best, he might be a professional but there are certain things you cant control, professional or no professional.

It's not the same. If you are in a room with 20 women the thought is that you like them, they like you, there is the possibility for sexual contact. If you are gay and in a room with 30 men the thought is, most of these guys are not gay, most of them would freak out if they knew i was thinking about something sexual, I better not do anything.
It's absolutely not a sexual situation if you think everyone there would not have sex with you, and would freak out if anything was even mentioned.
It's not the same. And i hate to break it to some of you, you've been in the situation of being in a locker room with gay people because a large enough pct of men are gay that it's unlikely it doesn't happen.
People need to make up their mind btw. You wanted him to keep secret but you are worrying about showering. Shouldn't all gay people announce loud and clear they are gay since you are so worried about showering? Because if not, they are secretly in the shower with you.
It doesn't make any sense, you are having conniptions about showers but you are mad at him for announcing he's gay. Be honest, you just didn't want him to be gay. Because what you are saying doesn't make sense.

So you'd investigate all your teammates regarding their sexual preferences before taking a shower? If you've played team sports before, odds are high you've already showered in the proximity of a homosexual person without knowing it. Big deal.
And what about bisexual males? What about heterosexual males that have been attracted to another man maybe once or twice in their lives? What about males who consider other males attractive but aren't necessarily sexually aroused by them? Dude you make no sense.
Some guys are homosexual, but you're a ph@ggot. Big difference.

It has nothing to do with mutual sexual attraction. If a dude was showering with young hot chicks and they were all lesbians, it wouldnt change how he views their bodies in terms of attraction, and they would still be adversely affected by the situation. Same thing if the guy is a really weird old man who watches these chicks and gets excited while knowing they will never reciprocate his attraction.

You're allowed to feel awkward in any situation. You're not allowed to call for people to be stygmatized because of it though.
Although i'm perplexed, in every day life has your overwhelming sexiness led to people attacking you sexually? Maybe i'm just not that good looking (or give off overwhelming testosterone showing i'm not gay) but i've been in locker rooms with gay people (One of the parents at swimming is gay) and nothing. :confusedshrug: Kind of insulting really...

No...gay athletes should stay in the closet. Straight men don't need to worry about someone looking at them lustfully and violating their privacy.
Damn you're dumb as shit. No matter whether guys come out of the closet or not, their sexual preferences are the same anyway.
In other words...insecure dumbasses like you should be more worried if no guy ever came out about being homosexual, since this would mean that every male you're encountering on a daily basis could potentially be gay and therefore attracted to your overweight hairy virgin body. But in the case you exatly knew which dudes are homosexual, you wouldn't have to worry about everybody else, thus making your life a little bit safer.
So your posting makes no sense at all. The least amount of worrying would require every person disclosing their sexual preferences. Nobody coming out = maximum insecurity about which guys are into fat virgins like you.
Short version: You're as dumb as they come. And probably afraid that you'd actually be the guy with a boner in the men's shower.

Like I said Niko, you ARE allowed to feel awkward and uncomfortable. Is it fair on the guy, probably not. But its also not fair on the individual in that situation. pounds. Some of these guys are naturally on edge because there is a complete shift in dynamics in their locker room. There is nothing sexual involved, so anything and everything could go (such as walking around naked, whipping each other with towels) etc. Even if there were gay guys, these guys were hidden so they didn't affect the groups dynamics in the slightest. Now there is a known gay man so there is always going to be that thought in the back of peoples minds. They will think We are all playing around here towel whipping eachother, etc. Can we do it to him too? Would it be weird? Can I slap this dudes ass after a big play or will he get the wrong idea? Then there's the gay guy himself. He will DEFINITELY be treated differently from all of the other players, homophobic or not. How will he feel about that? Will he handle it or feel like he is being left out? How do you handle these problems as a coach? The whole open gay guy in a locker room thing opens up a real can of worms.

High chance to violate another man's privacy.
:facepalm :facepalm :facepalm
if you are standing naked in front of people and they take a quick glance your privacy isnt being violated.
do you even understand what that phrase means?
have you ever even been in a locker room shower?

"Hey all of you muscular guys, let's get naked and take a shower together... But remember, no ******s allowed!"
Taking a shower with men is the gayest thing you can do outside of touching dick. It's an inherently gay thing, so why can't gay people be a part of it?
Who cares who you is beside you in the shower? It's not a prison scenario.
No its not lol. What makes an action gay is the intent. Cavemen used to walk around naked and I doubt they thought it was gay that they could see another cavemans junk.

That's because they didn't have the concept of gay. They just f*cked anything. Same with ancient Greece and other cultures.
In our culture, showering with men is a gay thing. If there was nothing sexual about it, then people wouldn't care if gay guys were in there... Yet morons are saying gay guys can't be a part of it for some reason.
The thing is, it isnt anything sexual at first (as far as anybody knows). The moment a gay guy is introduced is the moment sexual feelings are introduced.

That's not what people are moving toward if you read the thread. They are moving toward basically saying the gay people need to announce they're gay, and get out of the shower so the "normals" can shower. This is not a thread about people feeling awkward if you read it. The people arguing awkward are using it to segway to other things.
Again, i know a lot of you people played sports, or go to sports clubs to work out, etc. I hate to break it to everyone, but there are gay people around.

IMO what needs to happen is private showers...which has been mentioned in here several times...and which is PROBABLY the way it is in NFL lockers today anyway
I am sure that 99% of humans in general would prefer to shower in private regardless of who is around if given the choice...I mean we have private toilets because we like to shit in private...huge group showers just need to be done with
At my Jr. High and High School there were huge open shower rooms and for the most part they just collected dust and cob webs...no one ever used them...football practice took place after school and everyone just went home after that. Phys-Ed was a 1 hour class that left no one time to take a shower.
Okay, so why cant I use womens bathrooms? I promise I wont look and Im probably wont be attracted to every woman in there.
Because you're not a woman. Are you that ****ing stupid that you see parallels?
Most men and most women are not gay so we can make those distinctions. After that you have gay, was gay and went straight, actively bi, etc. Do you want everyone to have a separate bathroom? How is that realistic? Or necessary? Do you want a form people fill out? ARE YOU CURRENTLY GAY? EXPERIENCING GAY FEELINGS?
This never strikes me as an issue because there is literally no chance of something uncomfortable happening because much like my life outside the shower, an advance by a man is going to end quickly with me having a strange look on my face and saying **** NO.

Should an unattractive woman care if a man uses the women's restroom?
You know where I said it's not like he is gonna rape a teammate? Well that becomes much more likely to happen if it's a hetero male in a female bathroom. Big difference between women feeling unsafe in the presence of men and men feeling uncomfortable because someone is gay.

It makes sense regardless. It doesn't eliminate the problems people here have. We used to have separate showers with falls in between and a curtain. But the gays might peek in. Sneak over. Stare while you change. The people here seem to think there are predatory gay people lurking in showers.
I'd like more separation from the smelly furry men in the locker room who feel the need to walk around with their dick swinging for some reason than from gays but that's just me.
I said earlier on in this thread, i'm surprised people think NFL showers are these big roman bath type places where everyone sits together naked.

No need for the insults mate. Mens and women bathrooms are not separated just for the sake of men being men and women being women. There are clearly other reasons. Like I said a billion times, Im not claiming the gay guy would act on his feelings or act in a way that isnt professional. I am simply saying it is OKAY for people to feel uncomfortable. Saying otherwise is stupid and retarded. Its like saying a women should feel comfortable changing in front of a man because she would be a sexist if she didnt. Even if it was a guy she knows and she knew she wasnt in danger of being raped or the guy even trying to make advances towards her, she would still be uncomfortable because she wouldnt want this guy to see her like that (Purely cause of the sexual nature of the situation). Imagine she was forced to shower with this dude then. Its unfair how one group are being forced to suppress their natural feelings so that another group can express theirs.

No one is telling you not to feel uncomfortable. I am telling you to (pun intended) be a man and suck it up, because you can't (for the rare times it would be an issue) ostracize a group of people in order for you not to feel uncomfortable.
There is a difference between being uncomfortable and being in a situation which is inherently unsafe. You in a locker room full of men where one is gay is not unsafe. A women in a locked room with strange men could be unsafe. It's not even remotely similar.

When i shower (not sure about you) it's a bit separate. I change next to other men. None are close enough to smack anything. Being that close to me (or another normal person) would be an issue for me. No one is touching you that you don't want touching you.

The dude that ended up stopping him with a fist to the face? It was our starting center and team captain who came out once he got to college.
But I guess I should be madder a gay man was secretly in the showers than the fact a straight dude thought it was funny to piss on freshman and sophomores.

You want an answer? There is no difference unless you see a difference between a straight man touching you and a gay man touching you. I don't want anyone inappropriately touching me. If some guy touches my butt after every play, i'd tell him to stop being an ass. It's not that I think it's ok but then i find out the guy is gay and now it's a problem. I know who I want touching me or not, and men aren't in the equation. Apparently for you they are, UNLESS they are gay.

The real issue doesn't have anything to do with showering or anything like that.
It has to do with the extremely homophobic atmosphere in some lockerooms. Players don't wanna have to grow up and change the way they act. They feel like the gay guy is ruining their personal haven where they get say whatever they like without it becoming an issue..
People will feel "uncomfortable" because they KNOW someone in the room is gay.. So the gay jokes and homophobic behavior won't be as easy to laugh at and perpetuate

I agree with your general message here and don't like to defend homophobia, however gay men are MEN...not women. I am a man and I know that I check out just above every female I see under180 lbs, and they don't have to resemble Hollywood actresses...why would we assume it's different for gay men? Gay Men aren't going to check out men like that because they've grown up to be conditioned to not be able to do that. If you do that to a woman and get caught as you grow up, what is the consequence? At best, she likes it. At worst, you get yelled at, MAYBE in a ridiculous situation, slapped.
A gay man, growing up if he does that gets ostricized, made fun of, a very really chance of being beaten up. Gay men don't act in the same way toward men (especially straight men) that straight men act toward women. Because they can't. They are taught to be low key in most places unless around lots of gay men.
I don't know about you, but Puerto Rican, growing up I knew of very few gay or feminine men because they were not only a target, they were an acceptable target. No one would fault you picking on them or outright beating them up.

Plus gay men don't want to be beaten up by a homophobe who has some built in scenario in his head that the gay man wants him. Even in NY which is really liberal gay people get beaten up for "being gay". Not for starting at a man, or making a pass or grabbing someone, for existing and being gay.
I don't know, i grew up with old women grabbing their purses so i didn't steal them and parents being upset their daughter brought home a "dirty ****" and cops throwing me up against walls for not being white enough. human sexuality is based not only on our genes but also our environment.
to greatly oversimplify. If you raise a person in a permissive environment where sex is not stigmatized at all vs raising the exact same person in an extremely conservative environment where sex (especially female sexuality) is extremely stigmatized, you will likely get a huge variance in promiscuity.
gay men will likely behave themselves in a shower relative to other straight men, because of various social pressures. There are much less social pressure on straight men and women in the same scenario.
Also somewhat of a digression. IIRC there is a lot of evidence that the fact that females are on average less promiscuous than males is largely a societal construct.
Eg. 1. females are physically capable of multiple orgasms
2. the shape of the male gentials (some believe the head is evolved to scope out the ejaculant of other males)
3. the fact that intial burst of ejaculant contains a chemical meant to destroy other sperm previously deposited.
None of those evolutionary features suggest females are naturally monogamous. Eg. female gorillas

3. the fact that intial burst of ejaculant contains a chemical meant to destroy other sperm previously deposited.
None of those evolutionary features suggest females are naturally monogamous. Eg. female gorillas
You could be onto something, but the counterpoint is obvious too. While not a pleasant topic, the farther back you look at homo sapiens, the less likely sex was consensual.

Perhaps, but iirc many anthropologists believe rape wasnt that common
1. human beings are social creatures. We are evolved to have compassion and empathy and to feel shame. The theory being completely amoral and malicious people would have found it hard to be apart of social groups. The vast majority of humans that ever lived would have failed to survive without a tribe. The inability to survive obviously would limit your reproduction and remove your genes from the gene pool.
rape is most common when you are doing it against a group you have dehumanized for some reason.
Eg. after a city is conquered the woman in the city were often raped (the Bosnian war)
2. anthropologists have been able to observe societies that live as humans did thousands of years ago. eg natives in the rainforests of south america, natives on various Polynesian islands, etc. for various reasons these people have been cut-off from the rest of humanity and many experts claim these people have not developed at all over several thousand years.
The main reason being that they expend so much effort getting food and surviving that they dont have time for anything else. There are only 24 hours in a day, and you spend 6-8 of them sleeping.
Any ways long story short rape isnt a big part of most of these societies.
edit: from what I remember from several documentaries and an anthropology course I took as a liberal arts elective.
Most of these societies were actually a lot more egalitarian than modern US society. The people in the tribes shared almost everything, they had to, to survive. personal property and property rights were non-existent. The greatest taboo was hoarding food and other such resources.
They were also a lot more gender neutral and woman and men had similar social status and sometimes woman had higher social status.
IIRC property rights started becoming important because of agriculture. The farmer wanted to pass his lands to his son. Thus woman became property and female chastity had to be enforced to ensure that your son got your lands. And female status in agricultural societies is typically extremely low, and this is true in almost all parts of the world. Asia, europe, the middle east, etc.
I wouldn't care unless he keeps staring at me with his dick in his hand
