Honestly clutch doesn't even mean 10 seconds or less... that is some ESPN hype they want you to believe. I feel like coaches think more in the mindset of, "If i need a bucket , can player X get me points?" This scenario just happens to occur a lot more at the latter stages of the game..

i've always wondered why if Kobe was so clutch, all the memorable Lakers game winners during their championship runs were made by Fisher, Horry, and Artest.

"final 10 seconds"

so all the clutch shots hit under with 6 minutes to go, 5 minutes to go, 2 minutes to go minute to go, or with 30 seconds, 20 seconds, 15 seconds, 11 seconds.. those shots weren't clutch?

Here's final 24 seconds.

Doesn't matter if it's final 5 minutes, final 3 minutes, final 24 seconds, or final 10 seconds, Kobe's FG% will always be significantly lower

And this is supposed to mean.. :confusedshrug:

Do you even know where these stats are coming from?

http://chasing23.com/kobe-bryant-vs-lebron-james-game-winning-shots/

they count Kobe as "missing" a game winning shot with 20 seconds left in game 1 of the final

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QwnJwrgCCY

which never happened, it was a turnover while trying to pass.. not a shot.

bball reference counts it as a turnover http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/pbp/200106060LAL.html#q4

In that same game Kobe hits a shot to cut the lead to 2 with 34 seconds to go in OT, but that wasn't clutch right?

And they did it again.. they count Kobe as "missing" a game winning shot in game 7 of the 2002 WCF :facepalm

It's an incredibly small sample size. Say LeBron makes the next one, his percentage becomes the same as Jordan... if he misses Jordan will look like he's much more clutch. All because of one shot. When one shot affects the result so much, as a rule of thumb, the sample size is not large enough.

If this "tip in" counts as a missed shot:

then I don't care about these graphs. I want to judge those shots by seeing them on vid.

And Kobe would never do this to protect his clutch FG%:

To be fair, he made the right play in the Mavs and Jazz games. Haslem was wide open and he's usually money from that spot. Wade also was like 13-20 for 36 points that game and was killing the Mavs. Celtics? That's actually inexcusable. Dude HAS to take that shot.

ASG? Seriously? They don't count that shit toward clutch stats.

In any context of clutch, Kobe fails miserably. Last 10 seconds, 24 seconds, game winning shots, game tying shots, last 5 minutes of a close game, 4th quarter, NBA Finals, etc. You can attribute it to two things.

1. Absolutely horrible decisions.

If the team is down by 1 in the final possession, it's extremely common for Kobe to chuck up one of his anti-clutch 25 foot fadeaway 3, with his eyes closed and fingers crossed, over a double team. In Kobe's mind, it looks more heroic than driving it in (which he is scared to do in the clutch), taking a midrange J, or passing it to an open teammate (which is never an option for him). He even has the refs to bail him out just in case he is capable of making a smart decision when the game is on the line.

2. Mental weakness.

Kobe could definitely learn a lot from LeBron in this aspect of basketball.

Magic 32
02-12-2014, 09:41 PM

That took about 10 seconds.

The crap you write about stems mostly from the 05-07 period, when Kobe failed to trust Brian Cook, Smush Parker and Kwame Brown in the clutch.

Shame on him.
