View Full Version : Is Kevin Durant more valuable than prime Shaq?

RoseCity07

I'm being serious here. I saw prime Shaq play and I'm starting to wonder who is more valuable here. Durant's efficiency from 3 and the free throw line more than make up for the fact that Shaq dominated the paint. Also consider that the league is caters to guard like players.

Who would you take if you had to pick right now?

Shaq and it's not even close. Shaq is a much better rebounder, his scoring is elite, and Shaq was a good defender he finished 2nd in DPOY once. Also Shaq was a good passer. Durant get hid on role players on defense.

Call me when Durant leads OKC to a 3peat and turns into a 40/20 threat in the finals.

A random month and change stretch in the middle of the regular season is a legitimate candidate for MDE doe.

Why is this being looked at as a troll thread. I'm dead serious. I didn't expect this reaction. I expected "Durant by little" or "Shaq and it's not even close".

I'm looking at the numbers for Durant and it's really unprecedented. I'd choose Durant over prime Shaq. Durant isn't going to miss free throws at the end of the game. He's gets you easy buckets. He is dominating the game right now.

Seeing as how it's February and KD is sitting on 0 'ships... how about we wait until June 2016 before we answer. If KD has 3 'ships, 3 finals MVPs and ATG playoff/finals runs then we can revisit this question.

How's that sound?

A lot of NBA teams, like my Blazers, are living off the concept that you don't need to be efficient as long as you make 3's. The two point shot at 60% isn't as valuable as a lower efficiency from 3.

What happened? Didnt see that game.. If Durant missed some clutch shots in one regular season game it doesnt take away what hes done in the clutch over and over now for years doe.

Durant can put games on ice and take over 4th quarters.. Shaq had to be hidden and cost his team offensive efficiency with his bricks from the line when they needed pts most.

Part of why he needed frobe who was the leading fourth Q playoff scorer for the whole 3peat.. if KD had a Kobe level talent hed be 3peating too.

Nah, Durant is a career sub 40% clutch shooter from the field and his FT% takes a big drop in clutch time too. He also has a history of choking in the playoffs

You can't really trust the guy to win the game

I go with Shaq 11 times out of 10.

Shaq would put your entire front line in foul trouble. You're pretty much in the penalty the entire game because of him.

Teams out West were stock piling 7 footers to throw at Shaq.

Durant is great, but Shaq was just plain scary for several years. I'm also ignoring the impact he made defensively just by having his big body down in the middle.

I believe you aren't trolling. That being said, you wouldn't take prime Shaq, 35/15 threat every single game, over Durant? Especially in this league where your best center is Dwight Howard? Shaq would destroy most teams. Durant is unbelievable but Shaq in his prime was a physical anomally...you don't pass one of five best centers of all time in his prime up. There are other good shooters who can make up for Durant not being there.

That's my point. Look at what a joke Dwight is today. The league has gotten softer by the year. In the playoffs Durant can give you 50 and get to the free throw line. I'm not discounting Shaq but I think I'm taking Durant right now.

Key phrase: right now.

We have yet to see what Durant does this year. It's ramping up to be a legendary playoff for Durant.

For Christ's sake stop now, lebron was the first NBA player in the social networking and media era, Durant is the second. Much more of this and Durant will become no longer the loved underrated underdog, he will be seen as obnoxious as these stan's.

Please let him three peat or win two or three MVP, before you start "taking" him over prime shaq or thinking he could pass mj.

That's the other thing, remember what people said about lebron after they gave him 7/8 years to win... Durant could enter that territory.

Prime Shaq had the most impact on the league of any player I've ever seen. I remember contenders signing scrubs as long as they were 6'8 270+ just to hack Shaq and absorb fouls. Rules were changed for him for christ sake.

That being said, I don't think the question is too laughable. Shaq needed a Wade or Kobe to close tight playoff games, something Durant can prove he doesn't need.

That's how you can tell who watched the games and who's just pretending they did.

I distinctly remember the top west teams using their late picks in the draft to get guys who were nothing but 6 fouls for their hack-a-shaq strategy. They didn't care if the guys could even dribble a basketball. Only had to be tall enough to play C. Dude terrorized the league to the point that teams were handing out relatively lucrative contracts to scrubs who would've never seen an NBA court up close... just so they had their 6 fouls.

But we're supposed to take this thread seriously? :biggums:

Only a handful of players Historically have caused seismic shifts in how the game is played/officiated and opposing team strategies. Shaq is one of them. Durant, a special player no doubt, is most clearly not.

I'd draft prime Shaq over any player in NBA history. It just wasn't fair how dominate this guy was.

Troll thread???

It's interesting to see human nature in action here. Like most who argue for KD have a KD avatar, or are big Kobe fans. That is so interesting and shows how bias humans are.

Or that most Lebron fans have Lebron avatars and are big Kobe/Laker haters. That is so interesting and shows how bias humans are.

Am I saying otherwise? Noticed I said human which would include Lebron stans. Lebron just doesn't apply to this particular thread.

OP, you can't just be looking at skills when comparing those 2 players. You said you saw prime Shaq play, don't you remember the impact he had on the league? Durant does not inspire fear in his opponents the way Shaq did. It was kind of unfair when Shaq played, there was just no physical way to stop the guy from putting the ball through the hoop. The difficulty that refs had differentiating between a defensive and offensive foul was historic. A true superman. Kind of disrespectful of Dwight to take the same nickname, honestly.

And Shaq had some serious skills too. GOAT aesthetic dunker for me, more than Jordan, VC, Dr J, Dominique, Kobe, Lebron, etc. The way it seemed like he barely moved, the quick snap of the ball through the hoop, so effortless. His dunks were as unstoppable as Kareem's sky hook.
