View Full Version : When will Griffin ever be called for a travel whenever he does these pass-fake dunks?

His first initial step always comes so quickly after the dribble, and then takes two steps afterward for the dunk that the refs never catch it.

Exactly.

You're allowed 2 steps plus the other step and sometimes you can just do 5 steps. It's all good.

You guys need to do a better job in observing which foot a player gathers the ball. In all those videos Griffin took the allowed two steps after gathering the ball.

For example in the third vid Griffin gathered the ball on his left foot, 21 sec mark, and then took two steps.

Gather step is usually the opposite foot of the hand your dribbling in. Thats why you see James Harden and Dwyane Wade not pick up their last dribble before Euro step because they're trying to decide which hand to use.

Notice Wade pushes the ball forward to decide which hand to use to pick the ball up. He picks it up with right hand which makes left foot gather step.

This one actually looks like a travel. He gathered the ball on his right foot and then took three steps.

I know to some people it looks like a travel, because they have a sort of robotic comprehension of the rule, but I saw the videos and they were not travels.

Good that you don't have that comprehension of the rule, so you cannot see travels now.

I can see travels, but some people don't know what a travel is. They don't even know the concept of a gather step.

Some people have clearly never watched tape of themselves.

Have you ever seen yourself do a layup at high speed and then slow mo? Its not a travel, its a gather step, and depending on the stride and the amount you push up the ball while dribbling, you're allowed to take as many steps in between your dribbles as you want.
In fact, a lot of hesitation dribbles involve taking a lot of steps in between a dribble to throw off your opponent. Same thing with this.

Most of you don't realize it, but if you recorded yourself doing a layup while going flat out, then watched it in slow mo, it'd look like a travel.

It is a travel. Here are 4 pictures, both after the dribble. In the 1st pic, Griffin's left foot is still in the air (you can tell this because it is above the 3 point line), and in the second pic he has stepped down inside the 3 point line. He takes 2 steps after.

Ball gathered (left foot still off floor):

Moe gets it :applause:

edit: for real doe when you play pickup and a dude takes 2 steps then the "half" he gets called for a travel. Crab dribble, gather step, whatever. You get 2 steps.

Joey Crawford just called him for a travel and gave the Kings a flagrant on the same dunk attempt. Ball fake travel...then got hit.
