Is there any other Olympic sport that puts more emphasis on winning Gold for their country? Not only is this the only sport that really matters in the winter Olympics(let's be honest, it's the only sport with mass appeal outside hockey countries) but for a couple of countries this could only be a successful Olympics if gold is won in this event. I've heard this about Canada and Russia. The only event I can think of in this magnitude is men's 100m.
Really, winning hockey is like winning the Winter Olympics

How so? If you think of it what other sport in a fans perspective is gaining as much attention?
With the summer Olympics sports are more spread out. Winter Olympics there is much more focus on hockey. I've never heard a country actually say this won't be a successful Olympics unless hockey is won

Think about this, what would be a successful Winter Olympics to you? Owning the podium or winning men's hockey? Personally Gold in men's hockey would be my pick.
What summer Olympic sport can you say the same thing?

Better question, what is second to hockey? Someone who isn't ignorant to the subject should know off the bat. What would be the gap between hockey and the second biggest sport to the second and third?
Face it, hockey is the crown jewel of this event, without it it would be a flop. It is so big Russia outright declared Sochi would be a worthless bust without men's hockey gold regardless of medal count

Hockey is very different from the 100m. That event makes front page news across the globe. Hockey is the most popular event in 4 countries I think, but it doesn't have global appeal.
Sure the countries Hockey is popular in are pretty big, so it's an event with many viewers. But in that vain do you also agree that ping pong is arguably the crown jewel of the summer Olympics?

In regards to what you just stated I would agree the 100m is the marquee event in all Olympics. What my point was no other Olympic sport I've seen puts more pressure to win. I would never hear from us, the Jamaicans, or any other country the Olympics is a bust if we don't win the 100m. I guarantee most countries would rather win hockey than own the podium. Ask any Canadian poster here what they would have. I was in Vancouver for 2010 and that was the #1 goal. Owning the podium was just the topper.

I think it's specific for each country.
I mentioned Austria and Norway, they are mountain countries and A LOT of people ski there. I think countries like that take more pride in being the best across the board in events where the genre of sport is part of their national identity.
As for the emphasis of winning after the 100meter I just don't know, and I'm not going to pretend to know there's more pressure/emphasis on the US team to win gold in Hockey than there is for a #1 ranked chinese ping pong or badminton player.

I think gold in hockey is more about protecting your home turf. Canada at Vancouver, Russia at Sochi. The next time the USA hosts the winter games there will be added pressure on the hockey team. It means something. I feel like Figure Skating is up there too for the Olympics, but I don't care about it.

I think you've misinterpreted my statement again. I'm not implying no other sport has no added pressure. I'm saying that for men's hockey specifically the goal for a lot of countries is win gold for specifically the winter Olympics or bust. I don't think the Chinese are going to think their Olympics flopped if they didn't win ping pong nor would it be ever more of a crowning glory if they won. With hockey it is more than any other sport. I think winning Hockey is just as valued here as it is winning the podium.

How many countries would you say put the same emphasis?
How many other sport would you say places the same emphasis by their country on THAT level?
Would you say hockey more than any other event in Olympics actually has a bigger following per capita that value the gold in this sport more than other events combined?

I'm from Canada, so I can't say for sure, but I would think the 'usual suspects' put a major emphasis on winning in Hockey (Canada, U.S, Russia, Finland, Sweden)
How many other sport would you say places the same emphasis by their country on THAT level?
Tough to say, Canada expects a gold, anything less is a failure. I'm sure the U.S has the same expectations of their basketball team.
Would you say hockey more than any other event in Olympics actually has a bigger following per capita that value the gold in this sport more than other events combined?
Yes! no doubt. I don't think people really care too much about who wins the two man luge event (for example.)

Hope I did, Hockey in Canada is miles more important than any other event.

I'm guessing the enhanced focus on the Olympics in Hockey is because a lot of NHL players don't go to the world championships. That would make the Olympics the most prestigeous international hockey tournament to win.
As for the gold or bust statement I guess it depends on what you think is a lot of countries, so far all I've heard is that it's Canada because all that matters there is hockey, the US because they have a really good team, and Russia because they're at home.
I think the rest of the countries particapating are so realistic in their chances that they wouldn't judge their Olympics from a single event they knew couldn't be won from the start.

All comes down to who's goaltender is hotter.
Canada's D keeps them in. It's sick how it's so deep that Subban might be left off.
This ice does not favor Canada's forwards. US speed up front is gonna skate circles around them. Plus Canada can't seem to find a line that can gel.

US has some good skaters with some really quick guy's like Kessel and Kane but they also have some slower footed guys like Brown and Callahan. Duchene and Crosby are better skaters than anybody on the US, don't think that's really that arguable either. Canada is good at skating too, Kunitz/Getzlaf/Perry probably aren't made for the big ice but guy's like Marleau, Toews are more than fine. St Louis isn't a speedster no slower than Staz or Oshie.
Regardless Canada's forwards are way better than the US. Doesn't come down to who's goaltender is hotter, comes down to Canada choking or the US playing above there talent level or Quick going crazy. Compare that roster player to player, it's not even close.

I enjoy watching a few events for a little while, but nothing really keeps my attention. The Skiiing Super G and Skeleton Luge are pretty sketchy and entertaining. Going to need lot of luck to beat USA tomorrow (or Jagr going oldschool and Krejci going full playoffs mode Krejci).
I don't think we can keep up with them in skating at all, so they will probably win most of the challenges. Pavelec is looking shaky too and our defense is still making lots of lapses. We'll probably also hit more posts than goals againt too. Normally I would be confident playing USA, but not this time.

I agree the quality of players are better but as a whole you know very well we have better skaters up front. Where you excel is the back end with Doughty and Boumeester. Plus the fact that you guys still haven't figured out your front lines is scary. Plus Crosby has completely disappeared.
Regardless Canada's forwards are way better than the US. Doesn't come down to who's goaltender is hotter, comes down to Canada choking or the US playing above there talent level or Quick going crazy. Compare that roster player to player, it's not even close.
Doesn't that go hand in hand?
Also considering that the bigger ice favors skill goaltending is paramount. This more than any Olympics a goalie has to steal games.
And Canada will definitely blame the goalie if they don't succeed. I think Canada more than any country puts emphasis on this. If you lose, it's Luongo's and Price's fault. Look how vancouver treats Luongo now? He won a gold for christ's sakes. Stole the gold for Canada.

What Canada needs to do is let the dogs out instead of figuring out who plays with Crosby. Too late for experimenting. Instead of Bergeron, Kunitz, and Nash you should have picked up Hall, Skinner, and Giroux. The defense is that good that these risks could have been taken with high reward. Open ice hockey, those three would have killed. I would have taken Brian Campbell over Hamhuis as well. Yzerman sucks as Canada GM

Sweden are missing Zetterberg and Henrik Sedin, and we also had 10 penalty minutes to Finlands 4. We even played 3-5 for 1.30 minutes.
The only goal Finland scored was when there should have been an icing call and everyone was confused.

really? I thought it was really exciting. I thought it was our forecheck that won us the game, pinning the US in their own end and avoiding bad passes towards the neutral zone. Everyone expected Canada to park the bus but instead they went with a plan of relentless offensive pressure. Thought it totally threw the Americans off. One of the announcers said at the end of the game, the longest shift time for any Canadian up until the late third was around 45 seconds. If you can change lines that often and that smoothly (takes a lot of discipline and teamwork) you'll always be tough to beat. Kane almost caught us on a sloppy change after a PP kill (Getzlaf penalty?)
If it wasn't for Quick standing on his hea, this would not have been a close game, he made unbelievable saves look extremely easy all game long. One of the best performances from a losing keeper this year. Price was not bad either, but the quality of shots for Team USA just was not the same. Quick had to deal with multiple consecutive chances for the most part, rebounds, deflections, you name it. Guy is a stud.
I'll agree that in the 3rd period we had to play more in the neutral zone because no team on this earth can forecheck like that for three periods straight against a team with team USA's speed. Really made me worry. One bad pass in the 3rd and this game would've went into OT. Another would have blown the game. it was that close of a game.

What made this exciting was more the rivalry. If this was the same style and we were watching Finland vs Sweden I'm sure you'd turn to curling. This was dead puck era hockey.
And Getzlaf, wow, he is terrible. He's getting praise only because Benn shines on his line. He's sluggish, gave up pucks, he's like Andrew Bynum on skates. Oshie stole a puck from him which I thought was going to turn this game around in the third. Luckily Vlasic stole it back.

G-Nik Stauskas (Michigan)
G-Tyler Ennis (Syracuse)
G-Kevin Pangos (Gonzaga)

hateraid,
you think Canada is taking out Sweden?
Sweden has a lot of key injuries but at the same time they have so much skill to replace. Believe it or not the swedish defense has just as much size (Edler, Ericsson)and maybe more speed (Karlsson). They got the hardest hitter in the game (Kronwall) and the most talented goalie in the world (Lunqvist). This team if any matches all aspects of team Canada.
This is interesting because half this team is from Detroit so I'd be curious if Babcock exploits certain tendencies. This could be an asset for team Canada.
At the same time Sweden has been clicking as well. They wrecked Latvia, which Canada couldn't do with a back-up goalie. I'm thinking Price might be overwhelmed here too.
I see this game being higher scoring. Sweden getting ahead, then Canada clicking in the end being desperate, but not being able to catch up.
Sorry Canada but Sweden 5-4. But I'll be rooting for Canada.

Why is it so important for Canadians to see US fail at hockey? It's feels like us not medaling is as important as winning gold.

The hockey program in nothern europe is a lot stronger.
China has over a billion people and fields basketball team. Why can't they beat us?
That excuse holds zero water, the US has the best college system in the world and shares the best junior system with Canada. Also, US prep schools are second to none (a large percentage of Canadian pros once played prep in the US).
The US has amazing hockey infrastructure, the second most amount of NHLers after Canada, and the most NHL teams.
Americans won't see it this way though, they are into hockey till they lose, then its like 'yeah, well they care more, we'd beat em at basketball or football.'
That shit is weak sauce
So it was fun having the American media spotlight on hockey for a few days, it was fun watching their talking heads discuss how great their team is this time around, it was fun watching them say 1980 was the most important hockey moment (cough cough 1972), but its over, they stopped caring.
So now you can all go back to discussing gay player distractions and measuring Johnny Football's penls girth.

Damn Canadians calm the phuck down. Keep telling yourself what helps you feel good but the fact is hockey is a niche sport in the USA and apart from people in Minnesota, Michigan and Vermont, no one gives a shit about it. It's like the 8th most popular American sport AT BEST.

pretty sure the NHL out draws the NBA in cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Philly, Washington,
If we lose I am blaminh it on the fact that there is four Canadian referees. How could they let that happen?

Lately, yes, due to the Bulls being relatively mediocre and the Blackhawks being a championship team, but outside of that....MJ did way too much for Chicago with basketball for hockey to counter it.

maybe so but i think the hawks have outdrew them occasionally in tv ratings in Chicago as well.

I'm pretty aware of how good out programs are. I posted in another post we have a better chance next Olympics gauging how successful our junior team has become. My comment was more directed towards pinhead's remark potraying Finland as having a small population therefore they have a weak program. That is far from the truth. Finnish youths are inserted into elite men's leagues.
Also I'm not denying that US interest in hockey is low. But isn't that like that in any country where the market is low for that sport? I recognize and respect you're a prideful Canadian, night what you've described is every typical sports fan in the world

The Cup finals have been consistently good since 08. Probably the best stretch among the NA championships in that stretch or pretty close to the SB.

So who all pulled an all nighter for this one? I didn't, not a big enough hockey fan for that, I know a few people that did though. I do enjoy how Alberta allowed the bars to start serving liquor at 5am just for today though.
