Okay we all got MJ top 4.. but how you gonna disrespect the bigmen? You gotta have atleast 2 of the following top 4: Kareem, Wilt, Bill, Tim, Shaq.. pick any 2..

Even Bird is questionable and very disrespectful to Kobe. :facepalm

I feel like he chose guys with similar games to his own to try and promote himself. Bird = greatest SF. Magic = big guard with great passing. Oscar = triple double threat.

If he picked guys like Wilt, Russell, Kareem, etc. it would just make him sound dumb for throwing his name in the same conversation.

Lebron Chose the all-round, most talented players.

He chose the Guys he's getting compared to.

If it were Shaq answering he would list Wilt, Russell, Kareem, The Dream.

When talking about the greatest players I really think it should be divided into non- big men and big men lists. There are too many good players so it would be:

Big men: 1. Kareem 2. Wilt 3. Shaq 4. Bill Russel 5. Hakeem w honorable mention to Tim Duncan

Non- Big men: 1. Jordan 2. LeBron 3. Big O 4. Magic 5. Bird w honorable mention to Kobe and eventually KD.

I really think Bron is gonna end up right behind Jordan. He has won more championships than big O, is a better defender and scorer than magic, and a lot more durable than Bird. But Bron would have to end up with at least 4 rings and 3-peat this year.

It is. Only Jordan/Magic make it, but after Jordan its definitely Kareem first.. then Wilt IMO, debatable.

I swear, some people just completely disregard big men when it comes to history.

For me, this isn't necessarily the greatest but most iconic:

Jordan
Magic
Wilt
Russell

Jordan and Russell are obvious IMO as the greatest players and winners ever, one defining the modern era and the other defining the beginnings. Magic along with Bird saved the NBA. All 3 of them defined the greatest championship dynasties in the NBA. Wilt was the known as the most dominant player ever, and is by far the most statistically dominant, both him and Russell basically started the NBA (sure George Mikan did, but that was pre-black players). I didn't put Bird since I already had a Celtic in there, and out of all the greatest players he probably has the shortest longevity (3 of his seasons were injury plagued). I didn't put Kareem since I don't think its really fair to put two teammates on there who enjoyed a bulk of their success as a result of the other and his peak was during maybe the worst era of the NBA.

I could see Lebron making it, and I would take Wilt off.

This. Why would he compare himself to a center? Do hitters compare themselves to pitchers in baseball (okay, extreme comparison, but it makes my point).

These four are the guys against whom LeBron compares himself. When you look at it like that, I don't see a problem. Last time he did a top 4 list he also mentioned Dr. J (instead of Robertson), though Big O makes more sense. Other than those five, who else is he going to name? Kobe, who is still active? Unnecessary. West? No disrespect, but the others would have to be there over him. Wade, his own teammate, who like Kobe is still playing? Nah.

I tried to overreact at first, but there's nothing wrong with LeBron picking those four, all perimeter players, for his personal Mt. Rushmore.

I think he just picked guys he liked the most. LeBron has always been friendly with Magic, Bird, and Robertson. With Big 0 being one of LeBron's bigger defenders. And Magic has hopped on LeBron's nuts hardcore the last few years. For whatever reason though, he is never one to give big men credit. I am shocked he didn't say Duncan though. He usually gives the most praise to players that have beaten him before in a series.

In terms of absolute peak, he has cases over Bird and Magic, depending on how much you value defense.

Impact? Maybe not now in his twilight years, but if you really think about it Duncan did more in his career than Bird, with less talent (although Bird's stiffer competition may make up for that).

I don't have Duncan on my Mt. Rushmore or top 4, but to say he isn't close to some of those guys is just wrong.

Should be a mix of best and most icon. Simply being the best isn't enough to transcend the sport.

Honestly, the players I would put on the list are all guards/sf's as well. They are the ones that truly transcended the game and made it popular to the masses. Big 7+ comparatively less fluid sized men cannot make the game appeal to the common man.

Dr. J
Magic
Bird
Jordan
*Kobe may replace Dr. J given the global popularity he brought to a place like China. I visited China and jeez...it's a Kobe nation over there.

Quotes to support why I picked Dr. J (clearly been better players like Kobe, Duncan, Shaq, maybe even Wilt, and Russell)

"Julius Erving did more to popularize basketball than anybody else who's ever played the game. I remember going to the schoolyard as a kid the day after one of his games would be on TV. Everybody there would be saying, 'Did you see The Doctor?' And we'd all start trying to do those moves." -

"As a basketball player, Julius was the first to actually take the torch and become the spokesman for the NBA. He understood what his role was and how important it was for him to conduct himself as a representative of the league. Julius was the first player I ever remember who transcended sports and was known by one name, Doctor".

One of the few times I agree with you.

If Kobe, Lebron, or KD had missed that, they would've been slaughtered by the media.

I've probably responded to this comment 5 times and each time you've decided to ignore it.

Duncan does not crave media attention. He doesn't ask for GQ covers or whatever when he wins the MVP. He was hard enough on himself for missing that layup. He's a 37-year-old player who had a very good game. What is there to say? Duncan wasn't able to carry his team into victory?

Kobe got crucified for his game 7 because he was the best player in the world according to many people. LeBron got crucified for the exact same reason (and his choke against the Mavs was 1000x worse than Duncan's supposed choke against the Heat).

Not even close. Every time the conversation about other great players came up he was always pretty humble about it. Of course, that's in public. Not sure what he said in private. Another things, if he was really concerned about stacking up his resume, I really doubt he would've retired as much as he did.

Why do people take NBA players opinions so seriously? I see people saying shit like "A poll of NBA players say the majority would rather have Kobe take the last shot than LeBron" and then I see the same people disrespect players opinions about things like Mt. Rushmore. If you're not going to take some of their opinions seriously, why take any of them seriously?
